[Dev Attention] Armors in ESO - Need Overhauls?

Malpherian

✭✭✭✭✭
Throughout the beta and the first 2 updates, players have continuously made comments both on the forums, and in game about the seemingly lackluster quality of the armor in game. Most notably, the Daedric armor which has had fans, and players in an uproar since release at the obviously lack of detail and quality or even work put into this legendary, fan favorite armor set.

While undoubtedly, in general the armor is most definitely sub-par and low quality, compared to other TES releases, perhaps this is due to the engine or budget cuts during development or some other issue the players and fans are not aware of.

Whatever the reason in the past, the game is released and the income flowing in, and new updates seem to be, getting released almost monthly. I believe the time is now for a change, and an overhaul and polishing of the armors designs and looks to show a more polished and generally more professional look to the armor sets of ESO.

Below is a pole inquiring as to the communities opinion on the armor in general in ESO and whether or not it should be overhauled and improved, not only graphically, but design wise in general.

Please Note that it is assumed everyone wants "More Armor Motifs" and Sets. So this is not a selection on the poll. :)

Armors need a redesing. They don't fit imho with the TES universe. Sometimes you look like a clown.

Number 3 is there for people who don't want the current armor changed at all, but still want new sets.

Number 4 is for those of you who want everything to stay like it is period, with no new armor content ever being added.

Number 5 is there for those of you that wish to post your own ideals.

I added these so that everyone could have a choice and inclusion in the discussion. I see on some other thread people complaining about lack of choice in these polls, these options were added to help avoid such.

There are armor sets that simply will never be worn by my characters due to how ugly they are design wise.

When I play an MMO I do as much cosmetic role-play as possible. In GW2 for instance I only put my 6 characters in their respective cultural armor. Then here comes ESO, I decide to play an Orc. I love him.. I DO NOT love his medium armor. What is this trash? It is really indescribable how ugly and badly colored it is.

While I am sincerely hoping that dyes will improve my outlook on certain armor sets, they do however still need an overhaul.

I say yes because I find it very hard to equip a good looking helmet on my small size breton. The helmets look like inflateable pool balls on the head of a skinny character.
What I really want though is a complete reworking of the armour sets. That needs alot of work done.
The set system seem so fragile today that you have no idea if a set bonus is actually doing what it is supposed to, or if what it is supposed to is what is intended or what actually is intended with the lack of melee combat synergies.
Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

most certainly. have you seen Thalmor robes? they wear some generic, black coloured rags, Their Skyrim design is timeless. The Race of traditions and order would not change it over time.

Auri-El protect us from the heresies that such competition may bring. When this 'fan' thing starts to project its weaknesses; emotions and feelings into Lore, then horrible ideas come to the light. And all of them deserve to burn, for ill conceived concept is sacrilege itself.

@Surinen, no, not a public contest, only Zenimax alone will determine the award winners.

then maybe it would be good idea. not that I trust ZOS, especially after what they have done to Altmer buildings. but as long as they choose lore positive designs then I'm all for it. Auri-El protect us from tumblr acolytes.

I don't care what the armor looks like, but the mechanics surrounding how armor works need serious attention. Light armor is fine, but the bonuses provided by Light Armor make Medium and Heavy more like novelty items than armor. While medium and heavy armor have their place, the further you progress in the game, the wider the gap becomes between light armor and the other two types.

Sadly though, I don't think this problem can be remedied simply by buffing heavy and medium armor skills. Light armor is more appealing to many players because of how well it interacts with class skills. It provides a lot of spell resistance, which is greatly needed in Veteran Ranks, and the magicka regen and cost reduction allows you to use your class skills much more frequently. It doesn't matter whether you are a tank, dps, or healer; all three roles benefit equally from the bonuses provided by light armor because all class skills use magicka.

Meidum and Heavy armor builds just don't achieve the same level of cohesive interaction with class skills. The stamina based weapon skills could have great synergy with medium armor builds, but ZOS chose to make stamina builds weak compared to magicka builds. Until Stamina can be just as viable as Magicka builds, then medium armor is a bit of a red herring.

Heavy armor can help tanks a lot right now, but later in the game light armor becomes just as effective for armor capping, and provides the aforementioned bonuses that edge out heavy armor more and more as more skill points are acquired.

The solution to these problems just won't be easy. There are complex and varying reasons for why one armor type is less effective than another, and from what I've seen of how ZOS handles these problems, I get the feeling that pointing this out to them will only result in nerfs for light armor that will just make everyone equally gimped.

I don't mind the styles of the armours, it's the colours, yuck !

    Light green ?

    Light Blue ?

Picked up a really well specced light armour robe from a dungeon drop in Coldharbour, thought "great, that'll do nicely".

Tried it on and its bloomin PINK !!!

Is there anywhere to get Black light armour, drops or crafted ?

I'm happy with the designs, but unhappy with the fact all fabric looks washed out, even when brand new. That and the colour changes when the quality is improved have me gnashing my teeth in exasperation.

Whoever decided that (for example) a wonderful midnight blue would be great for Normal items, vomit green for Magical and brown for Arcane quality needs shaking upside down.

If I didn't know better, I'd swear ZOS were planning to sell dyes on the cash shop.

So long as there are no flowing flames and sparkles, I suppose i'll be fine with whatever armor they come up with.

But I prefer the more 'lackluster' look myself, seems to actually belong to this medieval-esque setting.

I don't know if it's design or colors. Some of the bright shiny colors seems out of place in the game(and like someone said above you end up looking like a clown). While I really am waiting eagerly for the gear paint tool that's coming, if it's just going to add more out of place clown people running around, then it's probably a step back. I'm hoping they are tuning the colors to remain realistic or the game is gunna look too much like WOW.

The colors are a way to create variety but I think it won't be enough.

I like the idea armors have to be more realistic and not like other asian MMO but I think you've been too far. Rough stitching or textures (leather and clothes especially), washed out effect, strange proportions for some helms, etc... Some movies or series have proven we can do something realistic but class and epic. Look at "Gladiator" movie, "Lord of the Rings" or "The Hobbit", "Spartacus" series or "Vikings". Skyrim mods are another good inspiration.

I guess you can't go so far in the detail because of the optimization but you surely can do better as other MMO do it.

It's important to me how my character looks. Right now I'm using a combination of bosmer and daedric items (I use one daedric chest piece). I usually hide my helmet as the only helmets I like are the light armor hats that hide your face (like the Covenant hat). I'm looking forward to the thief and assassin guild armors but they won't arrive soon. Right now it's pretty much impossible to achieve a proper leather/ranger/assassin type of armor and this needs to be fixed ASAP.

No - Leave armor as is, but add more motifs and different sets.
If people REALLY don't like the daedric set, or any one particular set, fine perhaps it needs to be looked at. But imo the armor design in general in this game is fine - the dye system SHOULD fix alot of the "omg bright pink robe" issues (or exacerbate it, but at least people will be able to choose), and help with making things match overall. I disagree wholeheartedly with:
While undoubtedly, in general the armor is most definitely sub-par and low quality, compared to other TES releases, perhaps this is due to the engine or budget cuts during development or some other issue the players and fans are not aware of.

I think that in general the armor looks gorgeous and realistic, and I honestly despised the armor that I saw in Oblivion. Skyrim was okay, but just "meh".

We just needs cloaks/capes, then after that more motifs will always be welcome.
