ESO Music (more info please)

the.olive.riverb16_ESO
Hey,

I'm a sucker for Elder Scrolls music - ever since TES3 Morrowind. I listen to it more frequently than I'd like to admit.

ESO music lives up to the expectations except... there's absolutely no info around the auto-generated music engine and how it works and whether or not some of that material (that is... if this isn't just a rumour and I'm talking ***) has been captured in a track.

E.g., the Wailing Prison song - iconic, your first contact with the world of Elder Scrolls in ESO - and yet it's not even part of the main official soundtrack!

Does anyone know anything about this?

The Wailing prison song, you mean the song that also plays at Dolmens?

Yeah, that's one of the best soundtracks in the game and it sucks that it's not even in the official soundtrack.

They did away with the auto generated music. There's a story about it in the news section. http://www.elderscrollsonline.com/en-us/news/post/2014/02/26/creating-eso-music
At one extreme, we had a music system that was capable of adapting to gameplay on a measure-by-measure basis, but it proved almost prohibitively difficult to work with, and didn't yield very satisfying results.
The music is truly composed—not dynamically generated—but structured in such a way that it can take left or right turns at key moments as the state of gameplay changes. The various pieces are tied to particular biome types, locations, and moods.

Not sure what this has to do with the fact that the first in-game music you hear and the music your hear repeatedly when playing several aspects of the game isn't on the soundtrack CD.

I agree with the others, I was very disappointed when I found that music wasn't on the CD.

No, at least nothing in that article says it is.

That article is talking about the soundtrack meaning the music in the game, not the soundtrack CD (those are separate meanings), so their mentioning auto-generated music isn't included has nothing to do with the soundtrack CD not having music that in-game is auto-generated.

Yes, because it plays at the beginning of the game, Dolmens, Fungal Grotto vet version and when Molag Bal appears at the trucemeeting during the mainquest.

There are probably more that i've probably missed.

I was answering the OP's question about auto generated music, of which, ESO has none.

Thanks all for the replies! Insightful!

So we've established there ain't auto-generated music in the game although it was a possibility earlier on in the project - hence the rumours.

That's great they decided NOT to do it. I'm too fond of Jeremy and now the new composers to think computer-generated stuff would cut the deal.

    Thanks Tabbycat for the article!

Thanks Maotti_Nor for the link! I was looking for that!

silver_serpent raises another song I haven't even listened to before (despite already having reached 50 on one of my characters!). They should do a bard CD. :)

This is where I heard the rumour:

Can someone bring this reddit question into the forum? I ain't got a reddit login.
