Dear Zenimax - Re: Hirelings

Dear Zenimax,

Hirelings suck.
  • Armor Traits from Hirelings suck.
  • Weapon Traits from Hirelings suck.
  • Style Material from Hirelings suck.
In conclusion, Hirelings suck.

Sincerely,

A devoted player.

During my normal day of exploring, farming, killing, questing and general shenanigans, the above listed items come to me in abundance. From looting corpses, to opening chests, dressers, barrels, trunks, shelves, and sacks. Deconstructing items generally provides these materials is quantities that fill up my meager inventory.

I can supply my guild's crafting bank with these crafting materials, in bulk, on an hourly basis. It is quite often to see more then 1 STACK of these things sitting in the crafting bank wasting space.

Why then would I want a Hireling...an individual that I either hired with money, or gained via my own reputation as a crafter, or purchased with skill-points, or whatever lore-worthy reason that exists to HAVE a hireling, would I want them delivering to me, these crafting mats that I already have in abundance.

The only useful thing a hireling provides me is the occasional upgrade material. GREEN upgrade mats are useless as well. I have STACKS of these things. RAW crafting materials are useful as well, but less so then upgrade mats. ANYTHING else a hireling currently brings me is a waste of my time and skill points, and a colossal waste of the hireling's time.

If I had a cattle-prod, I would use it every single time a hireling returned with mats I never need. I would use that prod until the hireling learned a lesson or was dead.

The next hireling that took his place I would show the burnt charred corpse to, just to make a point. Then I would have to prod the new hireling once...only once...before the job even started, and he would know I mean business and not to return, EVER, with crappy crafting materials.

In conclusion,

Hirelings Suck.

I personally welcome the trait stones. In my experience, you don't get Trait stones instead of resins/tempers/etc.. Instead, you get a chance for each type of ingredient from hirelings. Even at 1/3 hireling, you can still get base-ingredient, trait, temper/resin, and motif stone.

Getting any one type does not negate the possibility of receiving the others.

I have sympathy for my hirelings. According to their letters, they face peril on a daily basis to collect materials for me. Since they are not as awesome as Slurg, not being chosen to save Tamriel from Molag Bal and stuff, I understand when some days they send less than awesome materials.

This amuses me since there was another thread asking ZOS to nerf hirelings.

But yeah, it always disappointed me that my hireling would give me maybe 2 or 3 mostly useless pieces of junk. Every once in a while I might get a gold booster off of one of them. But really, they are mostly a waste of points. I hired them just to read their letters.

Lets put it in gold, many can better see it like that

In just one day I got 20k worth of mats from hirelings

should I get that everyday, hell no...I would love too, but I dont expect it. Seems though OP is, you dont always get what you want and need, but be happy that you actually get something.

try writing down what you get every day in a week from all hirelings and turn that into gold saved

Mine almost always give me useless garbage and, quite often, nothing at all (empty mail). In 3 months across my account I don't have enough upgrade mats to make more than a couple of bits of legendary armour and 2 weapons.

Similar to the OP my hirelings suck. Hurrah for RNG.

Gonna say it again, you need to log into the game every 12 hours to get the two mails everyday....

its like this if you log out of the game for a month you dont get 60 mails sitting and waiting for you to be open, ONLY ONE

I get around 10 legendary items each week from my hirelings in total spread over woodworker, metalsmith and clothier, and 4-8 tomatoes/oats etc each day from my provisioners. And those nice purple runes a couple times a week from my enchanter
So in my eyes the hirelings are pretty nice to have.

This is the amount of hirelings I have atm.
For provisioner I have 8x lvl 3 hirelings.
    Blacksmith 2x lvl3, 4x lvl2 and 2x lvl1
    Clothier 2x lvl3, 4x lvl2 and 2x lvl1
    Enchanter 2x lvl2 5x lvl1
    Woodwirker 2x lvl3, 4x lvl2 and 2x lvl1

Yes, I happen to realize that's how it works. Which doesn't mean I don't still think it's broken, just that it's apparently broken by design. It should be sending me 2 mails a day. Not a mail 12 hours after I last logged on and got one.

Now, I'm fine with not accumulating them over multiple days, but they should at least accumulate over 1 day.

As far as I'm concerned, it's current implementation is broken. If I'm logging in at 8pm every day, there should be 2 mails waiting for me. Not 1. (or, if I only have 1 or 2/3, there should *always* be 1 mail. Not 1 every other day or thereabouts)

I don't have hirelings for Alchemy and Cooking so I can't comment on them but Pacrooti and Valinka are definitely faves of mine, love getting their letters.

Some of the Clothier hireling's letters aren't too bad either, I did like the ones about the name of her store.

Really hope we get to meet them as NPCs one day - Valinka and Pacrooti would make good companion NPCs if they ever introduced anything like that into ESO.

I think they are fine. Hirelings are meant to augment your supplies of materials - not be the primary source of it.

And the best part is - you can always respec and get rid of them if you want. Pricey, yes, but if they're as bad as you make them out to be, then it might be worth it to you to make the change.

like the OP i have no need for trait or style materials. however I don't mind receiving them but wish there was a way to be able to delete attachments from their mails directly.

ie.. I would prefer to be able to click the bone/starmetal icon and press a key to trash it, rather than have to grab them all, then one by one delete from my inventory.
