What Do You Want To See In Player Housing?

Make it like an advanced Minecraft, really giving the players the ability to be creative outside of just decorating. Have professions be a means of building walls, windows, doors, furniture ETC.. This could open up another major section of the market, people buying planks from woodworkers for example. Obviously make the ability to craft housing items for only high level crafters. This could also eliminate some of the complaints of players thinking crafting will be useless once they introduce season gear.

-Instanced houses dotted around the map - not single 'neighbourhoods' which often end up empty, but houses included in the existing living landscape instanced to the owner.
    - Storage chests - more than one :)
    - Ability to decorate and move furniture.
    - Display options for armor and weapons we've collected.
    - A wayshrine and stable for horses.
    - Crafting stations.
    - Some social options - something for parties or events.
    Allow cross-platform transfers and merges

All the above with the addition of a portal that is linked to way shrines or accessable through them or to them.

I like the idea of upgrading via quests or achievements and ability to add more room like another floor or basement. I like hidden areas also.

    1. Display trophies like antlers from a kill, or fish you caught, or the unique things you get in quests.
    2. Decorations you can make with your crafting, like leather chair made from netch hide.
    3. Kitchen to store provisioning ingredients and cook.
    4. Yard/Stable/Pen to store my mounts and pets, and sit to watch them all run around if I want
    5. You lay down on your bed and choose a dream to replay (recorded video from a dungeon you went in, for example)
    6. Bookshelves with all the books I've found so I can sit on my netch hide couch and read in peace.

NOT to have it be an instanced room that you teleport into and between eachothers' "houses". I want it to be in zones designed specifically for housing with open terrain.

Multiple sizes of houses including mansions to show off your status, provide more hookpoints, etc. for storage and utility.

Consignment merchants you can hire for your porch.

Hmmmmm.... DAOC strikes again as having done so many things right!

Putting in land that players have to bid on to build their house would be amazing, charge a weekly tax to keep the house on the land. If you fail to pay the tax you will be evicted and the land will be up for auction again. This would eliminate players from buying land then unsubbing blocking the ability to buy on a piece of land. Of course have your house layout saved if such occurred so if you choose to buy another piece of land you wont have to start from scratch, give an option to players who would prefer to start over though. One major issue would be not ALL players could have their own house, but it would be something players would have to earn to show off their status.

Really good idea, but I think the payment should be small each month, just a token amount that you have to pay in person, (by mail) in order to do what you suggest.
How would this be effected by phasing though?

I wouldn't say phasing and just have your house a part of the game. If I remember correctly EQ next is doing something like this (I could be wrong). It could even work with the thieves guild and you would have to keep players from breaking into your house with lock picking lol. Give reason to log in everyday. Or Dark brotherhood, keep assassin's out from killing your merchants or maids w/e.

*Lock picking would need a skill line that gave a talent to allow players to pick locks of other players homes. Would give reason for players to hire guards for their homes. The entire system could be a great game experience and gold dump. Maybe even turn PvP on for players breaking in, and give the owner a huge buff while on property. Anyway it has a lot of potential to go hand and hand with the justice system.*

I definitely want to see neighborhoods like they had in LotRO. Of course, make it so the plot of land can be customized with what exactly is on it, but I want to be able to build near my friends. :D

That seems a lot like Wildstar, which isn't a bad thing since it's the best part of that game. But I would embrace any housing concept that included more storage!

When you add crafting stations and access to banks, etc. in housing then you see less people in the cities.
EQ2 was bad with that. I never saw too many people out and about in the cities.
I think it's ok to have housing to place personal items and for extra storage - but please no crafting tables, banks or auction/guild stores inside housing.

I want to gather things and upgrade my house.
I want houses to be useful, potentially even profitable on a small scale level.
(So something like a garden, take a look at blizzards garrison, they will be adding alot of perks for specific upgrades i believe.)
I want to invite friends in and show off my trophy's, such as rare/unique weapons in plaques.

DAoC style housing! I'd like trophies, but I suppose I'd also like things to hunt for trophies... or any end game really.

Archeage style farming would be epic too... but again, they'd have to add a more robust working economy.

I say it in every 'Gib moi house plz' thread, I want a Telvanni Tower, not some ugly hut nonsense. I quite loved my Telvanni Tower in Morrowind, I turned the not-so-secret underground feature into a Necromancy / Alchemy area, it was awesome.

That aside the usual would be good, most of which has been covered by previous posters.
I disagree with a few things though, the notion of non-instanced housing is amusing. I don't want to see houses every 5 steps, nor would I like an 'area' which simply consists of houses, but maybe that's just me.

The trouble with that is when you and a couple of strangers enter 'your' house at the same time.

I also don't think instanced neighbourhoods will affect the population in towns detrimentally. Well, obviously it depends how they are set up. As long as they don't allow for container farming, we should be all good.

Here is a video of a basic house in a very soon to be released PvP MMO.
Just posting it so those that need to make the decisions on ESO housing know that the Bar for player housing is ALOT higher than they might think.
Other games in Alpha testing now have similar very high standard of player housing available.

Note that it isn't Instanced either....and look at all that storage space.....

Hahaha. Yes, looks awesome as a fresh, new game with all that spare land to go around. Wait six months. Derelict houses, empty villages, all kinds of ghost towns and "ugly houses" litter the landscape.

SWG-style housing, anyone? Yeah, running along the land PACKED full of houses and entire cities that no one used was so much fun. Especially the constant rubber banding because the houses and everything in it was loaded all at the same time whether you had access to the inside or not.

No derelict housing, if you don't pay your taxes then your house is freely attackable. Burn it to the ground and claim the land as your own. Remember that in 'that' game its World PvP

A whole server dedicated to land and housing called "Homestead" and player homes could have a lock pick attempt once every 24hours by players to have a chance to steal 5 items, but wait if you are in your home at the time it becomes a PVP zone and you can fight the intruder!! If you win you get to take 5 of their items.

There could be guard dogs you could purchase which intruders would have to to fight things like that.

I know far fetched right
