Templars and PvP - Spread some love

Hi guys, I'm Jack and I have been an avid Templar player for some time now. Allot of people hate on Templars, for many different reasons. I think this deters allot of people from playing a Templar, and choosing to pick a different class or re roll to one.

I believe that Templars are actually a great class, and I hope to help shine some light on how they can be. I think that maybe the reason so many people don't like a Templar damage output is because so many Templar's roll healer. Lots of belief is that puncturing sweeps or bitting jabs is a Templars only real option of dealing any good damage. Templars have allot more to them, and can do so much more than just be a healer or one skill spammer.

This thread is dedicated to Templar love! Please post and show what a Templar can really do and why you love playing one! I'll start it off with this video, I hope you enjoy!

Enjoyed the video as well, although I'm wondering when you filmed this. Vampires are getting hit a lot harder from silver bolts nowadays, or is your Blazing Shield what is actually keeping you going?

I'd love to see more great videos though. I'm going to say something that I hope doesn't offend the OP, but I play a 'pure Templar'. What I mean is, my Templar is the sort that wouldn't be a werewolf or vampire. Some of the things you do there like Bat Swarm + Blazing Shield I can't really do. I totally understand why you did it, but it will really kill my style to do so. I tend to use Blazing + Empowering Sweep, which of course isn't going to be as strong as what is done in this video.

I do love the class though. Templar has the most style as far as I'm concerned.

My DPS actually comes from what you cant see, while I'm in the swarm I spam blazing spear and reflective light. This combo is incredibly hard hitting AOE (450 spear crit + 550 reflective crit) and it also leaves a nasty DOT on your opponents (125 burning dot + 40 spear dot that can proc burning light which crits for 360). All that damage hits multiple targets as well. I have used jabs and dark flare before, and the damage is around the same against a single target, where as this combo can hit many targets.

This was filmed the day i posted it, so post broken bolts. As a pure Templar you can still utilize blazing shield really well if you want to. As for vampirism it is a curse and a blessing :pensive: I have used it on and off but for a Templar to finally have a reliable invisibility its just to hard to say no.

Love the music and the video! Recently some fellow guildies and legend have been holding 1v1's in Volen and having fun. Not once did I see Ebonheart go down or few of the other Legends. Always respectful, fun and willing to help. As a v5 Templar it gives me great hope for my little guy. Just remember the name, " Apothrica !" Because v12 is right around the corner RAWR!!! If I get half that good maybe my pvp officer can stop shacking his head :expressionless:

They have done a solid job with Templar I am happy with the class and have been since I rolled it. Felt it was dmg weak initially but I just attributed it to being a more complex class/higher learning curve not so much like a DK.

While I am a healer I do very much enjoy my tanking setup. Very difficult to kill when I have my proper abilities. Bringing tons of Utility, only thing I wish we had was a better AoE CC option from the class. ./drool

Nice video! It always good to see dead bananas :D . Do you play only with stick and dress? I would love to see you in action with melee or ranged build.

I can't help but notice there's pretty much no one who even attempts to CC you effectively (i.e. charge/talon exploit). It seems like you get to hang on to an extra 1-2 abilities that I would love to have that I need for escapes and preventative measures.

From this thread and video I recognized Ebonheart Templar when I saw the character on the battlefield. This was last night at Chalman Keep. I'm DC and also play templar. You were low on stamina from dodge rolling so I sent you on your back with a wrecking blow and finished you off with biting jabs. I saw you one or two other times but the battle was fast paced. Next your bat swarm was damaging me when I was using a ballista while you were fighting someone else. That's about all I remember.

That's my concern with the big AE DPS Templars like this gentleman, as noted in my previous post. Well placed or well exploted CC = surefire death.

Yes effective CC is a huge weakness of mine, as it is for any class. The only real counter to it is efficient stamina mitigation, that is the reason I run drain so I can have nearly a full bar at all times. This build is not easy to play if I overspend, meaning that if I make a mistake in a group of 3-4 people I am probably dead. But it is possible to play this and avoid/counter being hard CC'd, it just requires lots of discipline and attention to surroundings.

Also, you had mentioned that people don't seam to effectively CC me well, and it's not because they don't try to. I do my best to avoid being hit all together while playing this build, I try to be very evasive while not in stealth and I also use my terrain as a survival mechanism. If I were to fight similar numbers in an open field this fight would be much more difficult.

Yes I have footage of that fight :persevere: and I came around the corner very low on resources from a previous engagement (I think I was trying to kite some DC) and found my toon's face hitting your sword :open_mouth:

True, and I don't mean to imply that Templar is the only class that is affected by CC. I just think big AE DPS Sorcs, NBs and DKs can be built to have escapes and not really sacrifice much. On the other hand, a Temp with the same goal is absolutely going to lose something as we don't have natural escapes (minus, as you've done here, investing in Vampire--which comes with another set of negatives those classes don't need to accept in order to escape).

Only sorcs have decent escape, but templars have both Eclipse and its morph - Total Darkness - which easily counter sorcs and any other class and is a useful escape mechanism when combined with shield charge skills.

Simply silence them, charge and then run and roll-dodge out the way whilst they have to stop to break your CC.

Additionally, templars are always the last to go down, especially as tanks. I can stand against a zerg in PvP and last a good while with 5-6 people hitting me. Additionally, it makes for good bait in gank vs gank situations since my survivability is far greater than DPSers in the group with everyone trying desperately to take me down before they're killed.

    Tank:

Imperial; Max health; Epic heavy armour with impenetrable (full 7-pc); Cleansing ritual; Honor the dead.

Stand in plain view, spot enemy and put down cleansing ritual (and mutagen on bar if I have time), stand and block the whole time and use honor the dead whenever health dips below 50% for magicka bonus.

Die after 10-15 seconds if too many enemy for our group to take down.

Honor the dead also heals one other player and cleansing ritual provides an area for them to fight with reasonable health regen bonuses so they last longer.

I have other skills on my bar for CC but won't divulge trade secrets.

Always fun seeing NBs and DKs bouncing harmlessly off me and sorcs critting for nothing while dying.

Eclipse is great for ganking or 1v1, especially since it counters sorcs and their Crystal Fragment procs and Mage's Fury. It also helps against NBs too. DKs can be countered with templar AoE heals and biting jabs and sun shield.

One of the most satisfying things to do is cast Eclipse at the very start of a Soul Assault so that the caster eats their entire soul assault.

My other favorite use of Eclipse is countering Reflective Scale. Drop it on a DK who is doing the whole tanking 10 people with reflective scale routine and watch how fast he drops.

We do have an AE crowd control, but it is a very close melee range ability 'Blinding Flashes' and its morphs. Its a great ability, but just no where near the kind of range you can get from Encase or Talons.
