What is the transition from level 50 to VR?

I’m particularly wondering when you hit level 50 if VR1 comes straight up as your next target level (As if it were just level 51) or you have to finish a quest to ‘start’ VR?
I want to know because I’m always a few levels above my quests and I don’t want to waste that experience once I hit level 50.

I was wrong, so really we have levels 1 to 49 then 12 vet levels0
