Do you think it would be better for the game to not have the name "Elder Scrolls" on it?

You know it. The brand Elder Scrolls means A LOT in rpg world and it weights a lot. It is almost impossible to handle the spiirt of TES universe inside an mmorpg, as you can clearly see.

well i cant answer that yet, because, the truth of the matter is that once we see the dark brotherhood and thieves build and a correct morrowind expansion then, yes, i would definately say that the elderscrolls name does and will belong to it. but right now we dont have those things.

A lot of people bashed ESO for not being a carbon copy borderlands mod Skyrim.

It's like bashing Mario kart for not being like Mario party

It is Elder Scrolls, of course it was never going to be Skyrim with friends, anyone expecting that was always going to be disappointed.

    I ike this game.

    "you are over encumbered"

"the weapon you are using cannot do any damage to the spirit because that weapon is not enchanted"

there are things missing in elderscrolls online that are (should be) from elder scrolls single player games, and to be honest, this thread is over encumbered. and the weapon used in this thread will not do any real damage to the elderscrolls series.

Nothing would have been wrong with naming the game. "Tamriel online" or "Tamriel the arena"
Or some other name that doesn't directly state elder scrolls.

It's like if Mario kart was called " super Mario bros racing"

Well what would you call it otherwise? It's full of Elder Scrolls lore, characters, geography, etc.

Tamriel Online? Doesnt have the same ring to it.

No... It's obviously an Elder Scrolls game. It's not Elder Scrolls VI; and that's where everyone voting "Yes" is confused.

Warcraft 1-3 were RTS games. Should they take "Warcraft" out of World of Warcraft?

The name ESO made people expect Skyrim/Borderlands most of the negative complaints are that the game doesn't feel TES when it is a different genre

Having it be an Elder Scrolls game is not the problem.

There are only 2 real problems as I see it:
    1) The people who thought an MMO was going to be identical to the single player game.
    2) The MMO crowd who thought it would be WoW in Tamriel.

Those are the only 2 groups I see dislike the game. ESO is its own 'animal'. Its not a single-player game and will never have the immersive effect of a single-player game. Once you accept that fact, you can actually see ESO for all of its own great qualities.

ESO will also never be WoW (Thank You!). Its NOT a grind fest MMO where there is literally NOTHING to do in those games except level. Those games have shoddy and shallow stories and characters.

ESO is a GREAT story-telling MMO. Again, those that recognize that and play the game as if they are actually following a story... Love the game.

No, they shouldn't take "Warcraft" out of WoW, but we are now getting the same arguments and complaining that happened at the launch of WoW.

"ZOMG" This game isn't anything like Warcraft.
ZOMG they're going to kill the franchise.
And, of course, all the requests trying to push the game more like the single player game because some people can't accept the fact that it was an MMO set in a certain world with certain lore, and not just a continuation of a single player RPG.

Dunno, given the amount of bugs Bethesda allowed oblivion and skyrim to release with (and continue to rely on modders for unofficial patches) I'd say the Elder Scrolls fits.

It does not play like TES game. classes limits me (obligatory classes, really?). Altmer lore disgusts me, they even look as if the Disney himself has spat in the kettle (marketing guy still living in 90' must have written ayrenn story because it is 'first daughter' 3.5). tons of bleach, whitewashing and wateringdown. they even have Altmer with human skin colour in this game!
not tomention unfixed atrocious bug: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/110900/altmer-missing-hair-colour#latest YES, Altmer have black hair!
writers did not really bother with reading up TES lore nor art team and this is why 'houses can't be made out of poetry'.

And we need to keep reminding them of the difference between the two, this will never be a single player game, it's an MMO and despite a few flaws a damn good one.

At the OP: C'mon, seriously? There's even an Elder Scroll in the game, right? Did you catch that? The races are the same. The areas are the same. The lore - which may be incorrect in parts (depending on your interpretation) - is pretty consistent.

The gameplay is different, but remember classes? They took them out of Skyrim and it was a TES game.

It's an Elder Scrolls game. There may be parts you don't like, but there you go.

Edit: I just thought of another example. Remember Fallout? Remember Fallout III. See?

But again, that's silly. What is there not to feel like Skyrim? You can literally go to Skyrim, Riften looks nearly exactly like it did in Skyrim. Cyrodiil is reminiscent of Oblivion, etc etc.

This game is more like Skyrim than any other MMO on the market by a long shot.

And- again... Did these same people go into World of Warcraft expecting an MMORTS since that's what had happened prior? These kind of people are everywhere... The masses have a rather low average IQ.

I play ESO when I want to enjoy being in Tamriel. I come to the forums and I feel like I am in Oblivion.

I've played most Elder Scrolls games and have caught myself bragging about how well they captured the essence of the series. Recently I had to force myself to play less so I could get more class work done!

Redguard wasn't like Daggerfall. Shadowkey wasn't like Morrowind. ESO isn't like Skyrim. What is the Elder Scrolls spirit?

Disappointed Elder Scrolls fans wouldn't care. Tamriel is Tamriel. ESO under any other name would be just as blasphemous.
Happy Elder Scrolls fans don't mind either way.
Non-TES fans might be drawn to this game if only because they recognize a big brand. That's good for ESO because it brings in potential subscribers.

Mate , if this game did not have the name ES and if it did not have the ES lore involved , i would not have even touched it.

Hell , i can barely keep playing it right now , the only reason i put an effort is the TES franchise.

The name has nothing to do with it, so it should stay but they could have had common MMO features AND made it a free roam style RPG to run around and discover and have fun with. Instead we got a game that calls itself an mmo but fight actual grouping and kept players locked in one map at a time due to lvl restrictions.
They took much features from everywhere and just made them the worst possible way. The way they handle bows etc. Urk!
    Thats what I think.

By making a full blown mmo they took a very large chunk of freedom away from players.

Zones have boundries that are very easy to reach, you cannot truly explore, and the world does not feel as epic.

It is on a train track the whole time too.

Should of made an online rpg instead.

It wouldn't make any difference one way or the other. The people it would actually matter to will either love ESO or disregard it entirely out of principle.

For those that play and quit frustrated, all will be forgotten when the next ES single player game comes out. The franchise is too big to be slowed by a mere MMO.

I have to ask, but why? If they knew that they wouldn't be able to make an online game that looks and feels like a TES game, why did they not wait a couple of years?
