That's two classes... not race and clsss.

My vote is for Sword and Board Imperial Mage. 10% extra HP / Stam helps with living and blocking.

There are quite a few good tank combinations. Here is my preference : works very well indeed.

Dunmer : Stam and Majicka +% racial passives, fire res and fire dmg passives.

Dragonknight : Uses Fire a Lot. Has reactive armor, a tag and pull skill and nice area damage with synergy and rooting. Lovely area Ultimate skills.

Heavy Armour : Great defense and passives to boost resists and regen and upfront damage. Extra healing too. Nice active for when you know you are going to get knocked around.

One Hand and Shield : more defense, reasonable melee offense and a taunt. That's just for starters, it gets better later with bonuses to block mitigation and combat movement, tanks need mobility.

Not saying it is the best but the passives mean more points can go to health so it is a good solid tanking build.

I have no idea which is better as I'm only playing a Templar, but I'm jealous of Magma Armor...

I'm playing DragonKnight at the moment.

This is a rough skill build of what I have at the moment --

finding it really damn good, decent mitigation and nice dps.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I think it might be a bit early to be deciding which classes are the "best" for things? I think it should come down to personal choice- even Sorcerors have some skills that would be interesting for tanking.
Whatever you choose, bear in mind that classes and skills will be rebalanced over time- what works now may not work in a few months. Pick a class you like, and don't forget ESO is all about being able to try everything, no matter what combo you pick!

IMO right now race wise Redguards and Imperials have nice passives for stamina/health. Those play a big part in tanking. If you dont have Stamina... you cant use certain abilities to keep your @$$ alive. I suppose some magicka should be considered but not before Stamina. You need to block/dodge.

    Id say dragonknight redguard.

    Redguard because stamina.
Dragonknight because they gain EARLY acces to a lot of usefull skills.
Templar, sorc and nightblades get thair usefull tanking class skills a lot later.
End game i think all classes are viable tanks.

I think the question itself is irrelevent; this is an Elder Scrolls game. Every iteration has been a creative process wherin you pick what you like and build from there. You can argue for the "best" combination all you like, but the fun is in the adventuring and making the combinations work.

If you're using heavy armor, you shouldn't use Spike Armor (or its two morphs) - it'll put you way over the overcharge limit. Just wearing level appropriate full heavy armor can put you right at or over the limit.

Tank = One handed Shield. No other weapon class has a taunt skill that I found.

The class of the tank doesn't really matter beyond that, but I would lean between templar and Dragon Knight. I played both in beta and went Dragon Knight for the armor boosting skills, AOE Ultimate that when morphed reduced damage, and the pull skill also seems to gain aggro.

    Heavy armor is a must.

The role of the tank isn't just to absorb damage, but to keep the hard hitters from smashing the healer and DD's. I tried tanking with 2 handed and spent the whole time chasing the boss because I couldn't taunt.

    Just my opinion.

It isn't a 'weapon', but Undaunted has one.

It must be further in, at level 20 don't have access to it, so that would mean not being a viable "Tank" until late in game content. Which could work for some people.

DK. Orc, Khajiit or Nord. Don't buy into the Imperial racials, you hit overcharge on those easily with stat allocations and enchants. Besides, regen's where it's at.

Easy, Breton Dragonknight. Spell Resistance + Armor = hard to damage. Combined with the fact that all damage mitigation comes from magicka you will have the highest EHP in no time flat. Draconic Power, Earthen Heart and one hand plus shield are the main investments, but there are some good light armor passives that help magicka restore faster, which in turn lets you use your abilities more.

I have built two "tanks" so far. My favorite of the two is an Orc 2H (no staff or pet) Sorcerer wearing 5 Heavy and 2 Light with a 1:2:1 attribute distribution.

I'm a VR tank as a NB, I use 1h and shield for boss fights, and duel wield swords for large packs of trash mobs. I'm also a vampire and my attributes are all 49 in hp, gear with magika and stam, as well as wearing 5 heavy 2 light, all 5 heavy have reinforced trait which caps me at armor with the active ability from Heavy armor skill line.

If you plan to be a vamp tank (or in general) 1000 fire resistance enchant is a must from an enchanter. Also when fighting a boss with fire abilities, such as the VR5-10 titan boss that shoots fire, you will need to pop mist form from vamp skill line when he breaths. It's all in timing, Learn the fights and you can be a great tank.

Ok first of all, the best information on this is here: http://tamrielfoundry.com/2014/02/racial-comparison/

The choice depends on what is most important for you. For max aggro control you want a dragon knight with sword and one hand and inner fire from undaunted. For toughness you want either nord or orc (nord wins out with the armor bonus). I personally prefer a sorcerer for tanking. The bound armor, conjured ward, daedric protection , lightning form, defensive posture combo makes you neigh unkillable while they are all up. Throw heavy armor on top of that and they might as well be hitting you with limp noodles. If you want a jack of all trades tank with good utility i would go with imperial templar. They have health and health regen bonuses and stam regen bonuses. The Templar class has a good charge, a few good defense clickies, self heals, stuns, and some good aoe. The shield and one hand skill bonus does not hurt either. And red diamond is just boss.

    Stamina, stamina stamina.

You block with stamina, you absorb spells with stamina (defensive posture), you taunt with stamina (puncture), you make the enemy deal less damage (low slash) with stamina......

Health regen is a joke for tanks really. All 7 heavy, racial heath regen and 3 jewel for health regen cap you at around 67-70 at veteran 3.

I even tried all out stamina build tanking, and i actually survived longer with the larger stamina pool and less health in veteran dungeons than higher health builds.

It is funny how this game works, but DKs get a lot of passive for more blocking, more health regen and more max health so...it is probably the only tanking class id recommend. "If you can not survive 10 seconds tanking a boss without any healing, your tank is not good enough". Someone said that and it is true in my experience. Going 50-50 stamina and health is also a good idea for safe builds.

But honestly in my opinion, tanking is not really viable by end game, only some bosses require a tank, but not all that much anyway.
mDKs still need a lot of love!
