Eh, the biggest complaint I have about the breaking of mods, is that I can't find my way around without a minimap. I've poured enough hundreds of thousands of gold into inventory space that I can manage things fairly quickly, but the lack of a basic, integrated minimap ... For me, that's a deal breaker.

Typically, i'm an advocate of minimalist UI's. I was able to get by without mods just fine in WoW, despite all the raid-guild requirements, I just put together a spoof mod to fool raid assist mods.

    ESO lacks
    Minimap
Guild store searching (even the tools they have are buggy and unreliable)
    Buff bars
    Damage / healing numbers
Guild chat name features (Seeing what character someone is on, until this patch at least)
    Trade chat
    Inventory display / sorting options
    ...The list goes on

Game updates WILL break mods. As a software developer myself, I completely understand why - supporting player-built mods is a headache, and managing API options can be irritating.

That said, if ESO provided even the most basic of minimaps, damage output windows, guild store search options, etc... I would be perfectly fine with how things are. The only problem is that ESO relies on mod authors to provide these basic features.

Without them, there just isn't enough information available for what I believe to be the majority of MMO gamers to actually enjoy playing for any real period of time.

Without addons, ESO is Helen Keller mode.

Seriously, I didn't know there were 54 things you could even use an add-on for.
Maybe later I'll give you a list and short description, not now.
But I feel this number is not enough to make this game better :(

Find most of it refreshing. Like actually playing a NEW game as opposed to a clone.

Still needs a few more things that only add-ons can supply though...

Yes, but! API - the part of their product too and they must keep it up. Isnt it?

So I can't help but ask, since this thread has been above entertaining on this slow day at work. If it takes more than 54 (or whatever) addons to even make this game better and the amount of complaining.... why even play? I'm sure there are other games out there you enjoy. If I wanted a corvette I wouldn't upgrade a toyota to make myself think it was a corvette.... I would just buy a corvette.

Anyone who knows anything about how addons and API work wouldn't have said something as stupid as that. If the API exposes account names (note: I don't know enough about ESO's API to know whether it did or still does expose account names, but that's what was being discussed) then whether you have an addon makes no difference - your account name is exposed to anyone who has an addon to look for them.

Every major patch messes up your addons. This is true of every MMO I've played with addons. Modders will update the ones that need to be updated. The ones that don't need to be updated, you should be able to load as outdated.

If they still play the game. Noticed a lot of addons haven't been updated since mid/late May.

Have no way of knowing. 90% of my addons still work even after this massive change that crippled all addons!!!!111!!!

So they will probably stay unupdated (i made up a word!) because why would they when they still work.

The API is the Application Programming Interface.

The key word here is interface, it's how the MOD is interacting with ESO. If something is changed for security, or if they are adding / changing a feature, the addon will no longer interact with the game in the same way, thus, it breaks.

The only way to NOT break mods with game updates, is to simply not update it, add / change features, etc. Frequent changes are irritating for developers, due to requiring new versions of mods - It is, however, the MOD developer's responsibility to update it... or not.

Meh, I tend to be of the opinion that you probably shouldn't use add-ons if you don't think you can fix them yourself.

Sure, BankManager and ZrMM didn't work. Quick fix and now mine do. (for those that care, BankManager (and presumably peoples advanced filter add-ons) didn't work because they removed/replaced some item categories. runes became aspect/essence/potency, scrolls became motif books, etc.) and ZrMM broke because they renamed a function. (Seriously guys, bad form on that one. An API, once released, shouldn't be changed unless you have a really really really good reason. Changing "Info" to "Filename" in a function name (presumably because the latter is more accurate) is NOT a good reason).

Looks like LootDrop and SousChef (my only two remaining mods that don't work) seem to be suffering from changes to the the tooltip format. Assuming the devs haven't put out fixes, I'll dig into them when I get home from work.

Account name was used to store addon settings, now it is not!

If you are bored there are other addon threads around that show you how to make the change to save your settings.

Would have been nice to know that I needed to do that before logging in to the game after the patch.

It seems that the patch broke some add-ons and left them to over-write some data files with zero length files, negating any info that had been accumulated there.
The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

Little known fact - You can call ESO support and request that your in-game display name be changed to something other then your account name. It's idiotic that you have to make a phone call to do this, but it IS a feature. This API change prevented people from discovering the account name anyway, previously, it was doing this for people that had bothered to call and request the change.

    Just a random fun fact.

your account name is exposed to anyone who has an addon to look for them.
Your account name already exposed to anyone in your trade guilds! Damn...
So then how are you going to stop people from getting that info by just not installing addons? Oh, I see, you're admitting that it was a dumb thing for you to say. When you say "Damn..." what you're really saying is "Damn... I shouldn't have told that guy that if he's worried about people being able to get his account name then the solution is to simply not use any addons."

Did you read previous post? Man afraid what some addons will steal his account name from settings.
Learn to read, but now - you are ashamed yourself.

Security holes like the above can also reveal passwords, credit card numbers, any information whatsoever (That you enter, at least) can be potentially revealed by a badly secured API. (It supposedly didn't, but that type of leak is possible)

Granted, this is a worst case type of scenario, but such things can, and have happened in the past.

I have never played a TES game before but enjoy ESO with no addons.

So be happy with it and didn't teach anothers how they need to play.
My point is that it is not something you need but something you want.
Everyone knows that add-ons are not ZOS' responsibility so addressing your complaint to the makers of the add-ons would be more reasonable.

Something I 'need' is a reason to spend $15/month subbing to a game that is annoying to play without some of the addons.

Something I 'want' is fewer other players who accept less, telling me to just suck it up because they can play the game the way they want to, but I can't.

Some people stick around just because some of the addons make the game just playable and fun enough to bother, and will unsub when they game goes back to just being mundane and annoying because of all the missing combat info and loot info, etc.

You don't want/need that stuff? Fine.
I find the game 'OK' with addons.

Make my time in game less enjoyable, and tell me I need to learn to play your way? You can carry one more sub fee without my help. I don't need the abuse that I get from the elitist players telling me I need to LTP, either.

This is my first MMO, there are many more ppl like me here.
Some of the people in threads like this act as if they're trying to make sure fewer newbs stick around so they can enjoy the rarefied air of their lofty perches better.

I'd think more people carrying the subscriber weight every month would be better.
Some people act as if they prefer to carry it alone.

    No problem, 'Soon'.

This is how I feel at this point:

The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.
