Should ZOS reimburse game time for unexpected maintenance extensions?

Why should they? These things need to be done. Sometimes they take a long time, sometimes they don't.

Why should they? Because you are paying for a product that is not working for 10 hours or more.

    Isn't that enough?

No. Maintenance is included in your subscription price.

But it says how many hours? NO, so...
"maintenance" could be many things. How do I know they are not just doing their work properly? Is that maintenance? 10 hours? What if they were just taking a break and you think it was maintenane? There should be a limit.

To be clear, I want to know if you think they should.

Not what their policies state and not what other games have done.

I personally think the maintenance time for the NA server should be more in line with NA times. If this maintenance had started around 3 am instead of 8, it probably would be done by now.

However, I do think that if you pay for a service that gets interrupted unexpectedly for a long time, the company should reimburse you. I've successfully done this with my phone/internet company and others, irregardless of what their normal terms state.

The question here is, what time frame is considered "long" for this service?

In my opinion, "long" for this service is 24+ hours.

Yeah but when you do that the Australians (or a lot of them) get all butt hurt, and flood the forums. That would be their after noon and if the maintenance today started at that time, just think how mad they would be if they lost not just their prim time, but the entire night as well, right now they are just about all alseep

@Atreus I'm glad you think a serious question is funny. I just wanted to find out what others thought.

@Islyn Nice constructive addition to the conversation.

@Katniss_Everlark Funny, I remember getting reimbursed game time there before too, but that doesn't matter here as it is a different company. As for knowing this will happen, I'm used to it. I just don't think it should be that way. If they planned the maintenance to be longer in the beginning, say 8 hours instead of the 4 they initially said, then people wouldn't plan their day around 4 hours and wind up complaining.

They should take a hint from Scotty off of Star Trek, never say it will take the time it will take, always over estimate. Then when it doesn't take that lone, people are pleasantly surprised.

I don't miss, or begrudge, the 30p they charge per day so why waste their time and effort crediting everyone with about 13p to cover the 10 hours downtime that so upsets you?

Your whole gripe is a fail of near galactic proportions.

Why should they. It's a game, it needs updates, that's just how these things are. For those out there that are freaking out because they can't play, all I have to say is get a life. Seriously go out side and do something, Sure I'm on holidays from work right now and would like nothing more then to play, but I can't, and I have excepted this. I will now go find something more productive to do then sit at my computer, losing my *** ever time I hit the refresh and nothing has changed.

On another note, loving ESO! Cannot wait to play again. :)

This part. I agree 100%, I was thinking the exact same earlier, the NA server should come down late overnight/early morning, has to be less NA players on at that time.
If options weren't necessary, and everyone played the same way, no one would use addons. Fix the UI!

Ah, come on, man. 50 cents? The logistics of reimbursing alone, it would be silly. And patches are patches.

Now, on the other hand, it really doesn't take a whole lot of imagination to come up with nice little things they could do to take the sting out of extended downtimes. An temp XP buff item or that sort of thing, mailed out to anyone who logs in within 24 hours of extended maintenance. It is the little things like that which very easily build good will and reduce heartburn.

And does heaps for retention rates. And as any MMO person from way back knows, retention is going to make or break any MMO 2 months post launch.

    b) Writing support tickets + waiting for responses
    c) Constantly re-logging because of crashes
    d) Wondering where all your bank contents went
    e) Wondering why you are in a different account
    f) All of the above

    Time well spent.

That's the thing though @dragnier‌, they only expected it to be 4 hours not any longer until they got close to the 4 hour window. Things happen while they are implementing the patch that is out of their control & they want to fix it before they bring the servers back up.

I played WoW for 4 1/2 years. The only time I ever remember the servers being down longer than the scheduled down time was when Wrath of the Lich King expansion went live. The game was down almost all day, came up around 10pm est. I was able to create & play my death knight through the starting area just in time to have an announcement come up saying server shut down in 5 minutes. I didn't cry about not being able to play or try & get back the day & a half that was lost to maintenance. I was glad that they did every thing to get it right so they didn't have to do it again & take a whole other day.

They are doing the right thing in making sure everything is how it should be no matter how long it takes for it to be done.

They probably will, but I really wish they wouldn't. It always makes people feel like their whining accomplished something. So the next time servers are down a minute longer than anticipated, the forums get even more inundated with ridiculous polls like this.

It's been a bit more than a minute longer.... It's been 5 hours longer. I have now lost an entire afternoon of play due to extra downtime and (due to the fact i work a night schedule) that results in the entire day. Can you honestly answer why it wouldn't be reasonable for a change of policy to take place where they do compensate for egregious downtime resulting in the loss of days off account time?

    You missed my reference entirely.

However long they think maintenance MIGHT take, they should double that and post it as what they expect it to take. That way, if it takes that long, great. If not, people are even happier.

If they already did that, then something needs to be changed about how they are estimating.

I've worked in the IT/Computer field and have friends that are programmers. Even they have agreed with me on this.

EDIT: Aside from the joy or sense of comradeship that some get from entertaining this idea and going on about it EVERY TIME there is a maintenance, can you honestly say that rushing to get the server up and a possible repeat of 1.1.2 is preferable to more downtime and a reduced possibility of a repeat of said update's aftermath?

As I said, they probably will compensate you. I just don't want them to.

When people start using words like "egregious" to describe not being able to play a game for a few hours, that's behavior that shouldn't be encouraged.

What you think because the downtime was long they squashed bugs?

Obviously something has not went to plan, or on trialing out the game changes on NA they have found some high-level bugs. Few hours to rectify them, deploy and then back to the original test.

Seems a better policy than just deploying and let everyone complain about them till the next cycle.
