I hope its a check box on chest piece or a conversion option on right click of chest piece, rather than a new item needing more research.... but hey, who knows.

✭I just checked out the PTS server and the Robes / Jerkin do share research traits, but under the creation screen -- they are different items.6 -

If they added new weapons or staffs or anything else I would expect it. The only thing it has in common with any other item is the same slot, with the exception that it's the same slot and armor type of another item.
Just my own speculation of course.1 -
