Is being a Healer in groups too hard?

I'm curious as to people's thoughts on this. I never had a problem with playing as a healer, but I have noticed that the population of healers is extremely low and the one's that are around get abuse from other players and generally end up re-rolling as something else... so what are some of the reasons for this?

Note: please don't use this thread as a bash on any other player or role, it is meant as a way to help people not abuse them.

Yet another biased poll whose creator simply can't comprehend people might disagree with their opinion. If you ask a simple yes/no question, you should at least allow for a 'no' answer, not 4 'yes' and 1 ambiguous.

i find healing both fun and relatively easy. it gets difficult when dps or tank ignore their responsibility to dodge/block/remove themself from AOE damage. A smart playing group is easy to heal!

You're still misrepresenting the results on purpose as not all people who answer 'other' will have 'no' as their actual reason.

I've had no issues; I enjoy being a healer in PvP. I also act as a healer when I am in a zone and fighting with other players against a group boss. Being a healer is actually an easy way to earn points in PvP; it may be slower than those in the assault group but it is easier.

I think it depends on a few factors. In lower levels it is difficult to heal becaus you only have access to a few heal spells and if you devote the few skill points you have at low levels to healing soloing can be tough.

It is also going to depend on your class, a templar may have an easier time healing than other classes because they have class based heals.

You also have to figure in that healing is typically not the preffered play style in most games. Most people want to be in the action. It probably doesn't help that in this game the "smart heals" can make it more difficult espeically when your heals target people based on current health or an area that people are running out of with the absurd amount of AE in some dungeons. You can have a tank taking damage that still has more health than a DPS so your "smart heal" puts the HOT on the DPS.

At higher levels it is a lot easier since you have a lot of skillpoints, access to all the skills and typically have enough skills to take on multiple roles.

It's not that it's biased, an incomplete poll isn't usually the result of biasness but more the result of lack of knowing what questions will help you get the best results to what you want to know. Heck large companies make and remake surveys and polls until they get it just right, so I doubt one guy at work making a quick poll on the ESO forums is going to get it right (no offense meant to OP).

Just want to second this. More than any other MMO I have played the group content here is very dependent on the group performing well as a whole. A good healer cannot carry a poor group here, not like in most other MMOs.
As a healer myself I personally find it very refreshing and think the group content is the best part of the PvE experience, sadly it is so "unrewarding" that very few do any of it beyond the first time.

Hmm just last night I was commenting on how much easier healing was than I had heard. Hell it is even easier than a facefolling game like WoW.

As someone who plays only healers in MMOs and has been playing MMOs for almost 20 years I can tell you, this is the easiest game to heal in.

Mana has been a bit of a challenge in large fights, but over all I think healing is just fine in ESO.

A lot of players have issues with knowing what moves to block and dodge i have noticed.

this when i am not healing pisses me off, i can usually survive much longer in the same situations the tank dies in because he didnt have the brains to block a heavy attack..

Now on the other end, alot of healers dont understand how to conserve MP or have the reaction speed to burst heal when its vitally important. Even i sometimes struggle to make that one second reaction that is sometimes needed.
I play every class in every situation. I love them all.

When the action heats up and my tank begins to weaken I hit him with a big heal, or should I say I try to. I am banging the poo out of my heal key but nothing is happening...........

Considering I'm 3-5 levels ahead of my current quests, and the fact my two group friends are as well, I usually have very little difficulty playing PvE as a healer. Aside from the group dungeons, I usually can stay in my "healing cirlce" and alternate my restoration staff attack and healing spells. They do all the work. I craft their gear and look pretty in mine. Now, don't ask me to take down Molag Bal or anything.

It depends on the group, really.

I went through a group dungeon the other day with two tanks fighting over aggro, neither seemed to know the other was also trying to tank. That actually worked out quite well, especially since they were kind enough to stay near each other so all of my heals could affect everyone (once the NB archer figured out he should stand in front of me, anyway).

I did a Dolmen earlier today in Vet Glenumbra, and everyone ran around like a chicken with their head cut off whenever anything was attacking them. There were eight people at the Dolmen including myself, and only two decided it would be a good idea to stay near the healer; the rest ran off every which way and took an "every man for himself" attitude which meant I had to heal myself a lot more than usual (healer tank ftw). And of course I was the only person with a resto staff, none of the numerous Templars seemed to know how to find their Restoring Light tree, nor did the DKs have any idea that Dragon Blood exists.

The more I do the world bosses, dungeons and dolmens in vet content, the more I wish that "everyone uses light armor and resto staff" was true.

The issue is that the DPS/Tank need to focus on avoiding damage plenty. It is impossible to out heal most dungeon bosses if you are on level with a tank that isn't blocking and DPS that isn't dodge rolling.

Also, you get tons of aggro if you place pre-heals on people. Healing is fun and rewarding and requires a good group for you to be effective.

healing as a group works wonderful to me and is fun, rewarding and challenging at the same time. but that is only when I group, when I play the rest of the game I use my dps skill lines and only have one heal on my bar. the other bar is set up with skills and a sword/board im leveling up so I can switch back and forth as I turn in quests and work chests and so on.

so in effect, I only put all those lovely templar skills on my bar the odd time I group. for the above poster, that is why you see some templars not carrying their resto staff and healing at public dungeons and dolmens. its just not worth having those heal skills fully loaded for regular play

Other players are too hard to heal
My experience using my healer alts has taught me a lot about how to tank. I don't mean that I've been tanking with my healer, but as a healer it's a lot easier to see what tanks are doing wrong than it is to see the same thing when you're a tank.

I was playing with one of my tank alts in a PUG the other day in a group dungeon, and frankly my tanking skill was the only reason we were able to beat that final boss (we didn't really have a healer - we had me and 3 DPS, one of whom was trying to take on the healer role out of necessity, and he did a decent job considering he really wasn't built as a healer). Almost everything I learned about how to tank came from my observations of both good and bad tanks as a healer. So being a healer made me a way better tank.

I guess my point is that being a healer is incredibly difficult if your group doesn't really understand the need to mitigate damage and not rely entirely on the healer for healing (or if they're just not good at it). If your group does understand that, and they're good at it, then being a healer is much much easier.

Challenging but fun. Challenging because you and others can get 1-2 hit easily and you have to keep moving, avoid stuff and deal with adds that are not aggroed by others. I love healing.

Other players are too hard to heal
    They need to block
They need to group with me
They need to stay in my range
They need to protect me if necessary

If all of the above is true, it would be wonderful.

But, I am having fun as is, healing is quite powerful.
