The tank's job first and foremost is to keep the biggest and nastiest enemy occupied, if they can do whilst keeping others hitting them too, well that's a bonus. In addition there are plenty of other mechanisms out there (e.g. AoE skills) that help in this regard too.
Personally, an AoE taunt would just make things exceptionally boring for the most part.
With the damage output that the mobs are capable of, an AoE taunt might even cause the tank to drop real quick. I feel that this current situation of only taunting the big mob and using CC for the rest helps to keep everyone awake and on their toes.

I disagree being a tank, we should hold every mob thus maintaining block while this is done so we do not fall so fast, if DPS and Heals are geared like they should be there should be no reason for them to be able to tank a mob longer than the time it takes to taunt that mob off of them.
