Greenshade with massive lag/CPU spiking

I don't know what's changed, but all day today I keep getting MASSIVE lag spikes (usually 5-10 seconds long) coming from the game suddenly maxing out my CPU load.
I'm currently not the only one experiencing this according to the zone chat.
My system is as follows:
AMD Phenom II X6 @3 GHz
Radeon HD 7840 @ 1GB
16 GB DDR3 ram
800W plat power supply
This happens regardless of quality level, which leads me to believe there is something wrong with the code somewhere for this area.
I'm currently not the only one experiencing this according to the zone chat.
