VR6 Balreth - Another pointless boss...

Another boss of utter tediousness who can't beat me but I don't seem to be able to kill... I hit him, I kill his scamp, I hit him, I kill his scamp, he heals and we start back again... in the end I just stopped and let him kill me as this fight is going nowhere except a stalemate. Someone tell me there is a viable NB way to take him down as otherwise it's just another boring VR quest where supposed interest has been increased by giving the boss more XP and a harder hit.

It's supposed to be solo content so, yes I could group, but if I have to then it is poor game design.

Suggestions?

Think I relied upon veil of blades, flying dagger, killers blade and surprise attack. That, and using the stun. I know he got to the lava once, but on the way back was able to item stun him twice and finish him off

Thanks for that - I pretty much tried the same thing plus threw in an incapacitating strike or two as well but he was shrugging off the class stuns so I couldn't keep him out of the lava long enough to damage him.

I guess I'll walk away for now, spend a bit more time cursing ZOS for not fixing our skills yet and try again another time.

I would go an harvest some some resources in a lower level zone but the bots would drive me even crazier :)

I did have purple weapons and such at this point of the game, v6, v8, v10, so not sure what you are using. I was also 4 medium/3light armor. But I agree, if you dont get lucky enough to drop him before he is in the lava, it is a long, long, long fight that makes you just ask to be killed so you can zone out

I don't know about how he is in VR levels, but I did this quest on a Sorc in regular mode, it was a cakewalk.

Keep him out of the lava. Use the storm talisman to stop him or just block his way.

Purple Weapons, purple/gold armour, 4 heavy/3 medium. He wasn't doing huge damage but I was not doing enough.

And yes my level 6 DK alt blitzed him - VR is a little different to the first 50 :)

You can body block him? Thought he just pushed you away as he ran by. If you can use collision detection against him though, would be the one good use Ive found in game for it.

If you stand in front of him he stops to attack you, so yes you can block him.

I'm EP, so I fought him non-vet (and that was a while ago) but isn't there some quest item that you have that stuns him and stops him from getting to the lava and regenning? I remember missing it at first and being in the same position that you are in and then noticing the "Press E to do something" prompt on the screen which then stunned him and let me beat him. Again, I'm a little foggy on it and it was non-vet so apologies if that didn't help :)

EDIT: As ThatArgonianGuy said, it's the storm talisman I was thinking of.

The talisman stun seemed to stop him but not for long enough, I shall try the body check approach and see if it distracts him long enough.

It's a DPS check. Basically you need to be able to pour on enough damage quickly enough. Yes there are some mechanics to stop him from healing briefly, but at the end of the day you just need to do a lot of damage before he can heal. I was able to do just a bit more than he could heal each time, so it was a game of attrition.

I don't think this is forced solo (that should only be main and guild questlines), so group up if you aren't DPSy enough for it.

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

LOL, I'm a DPS specced NB (ie. Dual with much assasination etc.)

Obviously I am hampered by the refusal to fix some of abilities so they work consistently but barring that troll worldboss in VR Dominion never had issue with simple damage before this.

I just did this as a NB the other day. The only gear that really matters is the weapon you use, because like you noticed avoiding any damage is easy. I guess medium armor in general would also be better than heavy due to the crit chance increase.

I used my blue VR5 Bow (fire damage enchant) w/ Venom Arrow, and kept my Dark Shades on him (those really were the only two skills I needed). He will pause occasionally to attack the shades, which helps slow him down. Nuked down the scamps when they spawned. Eventually he died. The end.

The good news is that the next patch is supposed to fix a lot of NB stuff. No definition provided as to WHAT is getting looked at, but there's a specific point on Nightblade - fingers crossed!

So with working passives and skills you might have better luck. The other point I'd make is that there are different types of DPS IMO. If you have weapon DPS as opposed to magicka dps I think you might have a better time. I personally have a balance of 2/2 for magicka abilities and weapon abilities to manage my resources for solo content. Like @kirnmalidus‌ said it's a DPS check, and since it's a boss not all forms of DPS are going to work.

I too am half magic abilities, half weapon/stamina abilities - DW on both bars but one bar with siphon/self heal/ranged/DOT & one with Shadow/Assassin hits/DW DPS.

I am really hoping this patch fixes everything... at which point I will either rule or realise I was dreadful all along and have no right being a VR5 :)

Yes @Niliu I think we are all aware that NB abilities are broken & pretty much any other class can lay down consistently higher DPS of the type needed for this fight but since this is the character I have I'm stuck with using what I have access to.

The frustration is NOT that this is a complicated fight, the strategy is boringly obvious, delay him as much as possible between heals and chip away at his health. The point is I do not have abilities that can do that level of damage, my stuns do not affect him so I cannot keep him out of the healing areas, body block does not work as he just runs through me and you only get one talisman stun between his heals.

I spent over 20 mins getting nowhere until I just gave up and let him kill me so I could get out of the pointlessness.

This fight is not technically challenging it is just a futile grind.

I went back one more time and after just over 30 minutes of extremely boring grind must have managed to get that one extra hit in to kill him - I feel no sense of accomplishment, I feel like I have just done a tedious stint at some boring job like stuffing envelopes or stacking shelves.

This seems to be par for the course for VR bosses take the fights that were quite interesting at the low levels and simply add HP and power to the boss while doing nothing about tactics.
