You aren't the only person who dislikes the term, but it is long-entrenched gamer jargon, and I have to say that railing against its use isn't going to get you anywhere.

You are correct. It did originate before WOW, but WOW was the first wide use of it in a game instead of a shortened name for cartoon as first seen in a 1985 movie.

Not a thread for Customer Support at all, but even then, this is just a term we've come up to use since playing MMOs for an extended amount of time.
"Toons" is easier to understand in context than "Characters" because they both have the same meaning at the end of the day, with the difference being one word being used to supplement the other. If it wasn't for us saying "toons" all the time, we'd be saying "char(s)," which is kind of awkward (as mentioned previously) when put to extensive use in conversation.
I certainly wouldn't say "char" in voice chat. ._.
