Is it too late to become a tank?

Hey guys, I was wondering about something: I am level 46 at the moment, just started Coldharbour (haven`t done anything or collected any Skyshards yet) and I was thinking about becoming a tank on my Templar, who is on DPS (Aedric Spear 45)/Healing (Restoring Light 38) builds at the moment. I have 2H weapon and Heavy armor already at 50 and I have Provisioning at 50, Alchemy at 34 and blacksmithing/Clothing/Woodworking at 24.

I spent quite a few points on professions, but I will mostly focus on BS/Clothing/Alchemy from now on. So, my question is: Am I going to have enough skillpoints to become a tank now? I would like to try tanking ,for the first time in my MMO career, and I thought I would make a DK tank for that, which I will still make, but would also try it on my Templar (I love healing but Tanks are always a dying breed so if I could do both, it would be nice).

I was told earlier that I would not have enough skill points for crafts then. I don`t plan to max them all out and I do have a few (maybe 3-5) skill points that I would put elsewhere now.

I did all quests and collected all Sky Shards so far, and I intend to keep this up for VR content too. Do you guys think I would still be able to level up a tanking skill set or is it too late for that? (Keep in mind that I will still have to put some points into crafting, including Woodworking if I want to make shields) I know I could respec but most of the skill points I spent are fine and I like them.

Thank you very much in advance!

There are close to 300 skill points to be gained in this game. You could have enough for multiple builds and crafts, The only problem is that some build require you to have some different morphs to work properly. And you can always respec.

There's an easy way to find out for sure.

    Install http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info303-SpentSkillPoints.html

    Go to http://esohead.com/calculator/skills

See what you can manage with a respec, accounting for a few extra points for skyshards and leveling.

All in all you will get over 300 skillpoints on your character, but it will be a very long time.

Thank you both, I will check the links out and probably try and level up 1h+Shield then.

Oh and I am not worried about morphs, I mean I imagine that as a tank I would mostly use 1H+shield and Dawn`s Wrath skills, as a DPS I use 2H + Aedric spear (+Drain essence + silver bolt and Bat Swarm ultimate). On Healing spec I use Resto staff + Restoring Light skills so the morphs wouldn`t conflict I guess.

Edit: Only spent 119 skill points so far so I am good to go I guess.

While I cant give you such a professional answer like the others here, I can tell you that you don't need to worry too much about where you are now with your char.

On the one side you can always respec (costs money) and on the other you have many more skill points left to learn new things :)

Besides that, there isn't a right or wrong about specs, some people actually tank just fine with a 2 hand weapon. It depends a lot on how good you are in your specific spec and how able your group is to understand your approach and adjust their own game to the new situation.

As example, I don't mind if someone specs totally different than I would as long we get things done in a friendly atmosphere.

ESO is trying to break with the basic "you must have this to do this pattern" anyways. While this doesn't mean that everything works equally, the Dev´s have considered this in when designing the game. It can actually happen, that a specific dungeon or situation requires a different set up in your skill bar as well, they want us to think and adjust - especially at Craglorn.

If you go into a dungeon just tell the group you are new as a tank and want to try something, I did so as well last week and nobody had any problems with that. Everyone starts somewhere and while I tanked at many MMO´s before, it still takes time to learn and this should be tolerated by others.

People just don't like it if someone doesn't say a word, it can look like trolling to them and then they get angry. ;)

    Good Luck!

Thanks also for the nice answer!
I am also for trying new things, that`s why I was always up for doing dungeons without a tank because I knew we could do it, and so we did. It is fun to experiment with things! There was always a healer, though, if not me, then someone else, but I imagine if we all had a (self) heal or two, we wouldn`t need that either.

I never look for builds, I always build my own character and it usually works fine, in many cases it is just common sense anyway, here it is really up to you, which is fun.

I started trying 1H+Shield in Coldharbour and, while enemies go down slower, it is still okay. Leveling up skills right now, then I will try tanking some lower level dungeons first (the level 40ish ones for example) just to get the hang of it.

And it is always refreshing to have a change every now and then, for me it is in the playstyle right now! :P

Yeah, I've done several dungeons without a tank at all. One the tank left at the first boss and we got tired of waiting on a replacement so we finished the dungeon with 2 DPS and a healer.

Not having a tank at lower lvl is doable but at vet you really need someone who can take some damage

I'm actually preparing to do the same thing. I am a healer/2H Templar right now & have been wearing 5H/2L armor. Heavy Armor, Resto Staff, 2H, and all 3 class skills are at 50, Light Armor at 48, along with Provisiong & Smithing maxed out. After I get my morphs finished in 2H, I will switch sword/board until I get it to 50. This way, I can tank, DPS, or heal depending on what I equip & put on my bar. Looking for some versatility. :)

Ah I am not alone then! Prepare for some tougher fights, though!

And thanks everyone for the replies again, I will definitely do some normal dungeon runs as a tank before trying one in Vet content but after that I expect to be taken as a tank more often than as a Healer, which I might enjoy more but healing is something I love :D

I am a vr10 templar with 230 skill points. I have enough points to have a full tank build, dps build, healing build, enchanting maxed out and still have 30 some odd skill points floating around, while still having 13 some odd skill points sunk into vampire that I cannot get back after having it cured.

    So yes.

You can pretty much do whatever the hell tickles your fancy.

If you do plan to be a tank I would highly suggest you avoid becoming a Vampire (and to a lesser extent WW). Fire is amongst the most common damage types in the game and when it comes to Vet bosses it can be extremely brutal.

As for tanking with 1H/Shield you'll only really need 2-3 of the active skills in there at most. The passives are all pretty much required for maximum effectiveness. I would also strongly suggest Inner Fire from the Undaunted guild line.

You'll likely end up with enough skill points to fully flesh out a few crafts and two, maybe even three, builds.

and a tank really appreciates a good dps OR healer because there is only so much damage I can take...as a tank, well more of an offtank building to have a offtank and tank skillset right now, it really helps to have someone by your side in Vet content...VR6 right now and yeah I can just barely make it through stuff by myself, but OWIE
