What is the point of the lorebooks?

erbob
erbob
Guys,
I'm a level 11 mage.
Can someone tell me what the purpose of the lorebooks are?
Do they help out in some way?
Thanks

Lore books are first and foremost the histories, stories, songs, and collecting them gives achievements. Try reading them :)

They give you Mages Guild XP.

I wouldn't say it is completely idiotic, as The Mages Guild are renowned for studying and their knowledge. I feel that books are where they gained this knowledge.

Granted, Mages also need actual practice of their craft in casting.

Fighters guild need to pest control the undead hordes and us Nerds get to hunt nice glowy books. Which is awesomer. B)

Reading the books tells you the history, lore, and mythology of the game.

Also if you are a member of the mages guild [and why wouldn't you be?] it levels up your guild rank as you gain experience in the mages guild from the blue glowy books.

I like the way the mages guild skill line needs the lore books to level up. It makes sense in a way. As for the practicing the arts aspect that comes from using the skills.

I hope the Thieves Guild skill line will be along the same lines you gain exp as you steal from npcs and houses. Then improve those skills by using them in combat.

They are stored in your library, tab between quest list and achievement so you can read while waiting for other players or waiting for bosses to spawn.

They also level mage guild skills.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Well, it IS the raison d'etre for the Mages Guild, as you are told when you join the guild. I click on them for the Mage Guild XP but I'm not into reading them. I just click n' go. :D

You actually learn a lot about Tamriel and you can read up about things that NPC´s told you.

The combination with the Mages guild is indeed great, ZO did good there and I hope they keep doing so with the other NPC guilds.

I talk to every NPC I meet and read every note or book I find. You often cant help it but laugh and at other times you get an information about a subject that helps you understand a quote better, which was made by an NPC earlier.

Especially for people without that incredible ESO background like me, its a wonderful addition.

Not hating on wow, but I wish they would had done the same. I often felt clueless about specific things there, as the quest´s often didn't reveal enough and lore books just did not exist in these numbers and with that accessibility. If you then had two nerds talk which is quite common on an RP Server, then I often sat there and listened while feeling dumb at the same time *laughs*.

The interface at ESO lets you read every book you found, so if you feel dumb like me at one point, you can read up and gain the knowledge that you will need in an RP environment :D

I think this is great to have a specific way to "level" this skill line. I wish there were more specific part of the game like that. Diversity is always good in my book!

If you're interested in fantasy lore, they are a good read! I read them all, and one day I am rich I am going to order a hardback published copy of each one for my own personal library. That would be amazing.

This is actually false. Once you have the skill (ie magelight, fire rune, etc), those specific skills level the same as any other skill in the game: by putting it on your bar and using it in combat.

Skill books level the whole Mages Guild line...the overarching ranking system that allows you access to spec into the specific abilities. Which, looking from a lore perspective, is not a half bad premise. The Guild has always been about knowledge and understanding of the magical arts, so collecting rare texts from which small insights could be gleaned would be encouraged.

Once you have helped the guild enough (added to their library) they help you by offering to teach you some pretty nifty skills. It makes sense.

I like reading the books, but I don't like reading them where I find them, because usually when I'm two paragraphs in something freaking spawns next to me then the border is all red and I'm being attacked by assassin beetle imperial sasquatches.

So I like that it saves to my journal, so I can read them later.

I do hope that comes in time, I was always a book collector in all the TES games. I never really read them, but I liked having them. I can't remember if I did in Morrowind. I know I murderer an Orc in I think Balmora for his house which I stored things in. I'm pretty sure books would have been a part of that.

Your archmage companion even alludes to it during one of the quests if you ask him how he knows such an obscure fact about the area. (His "What kind of Archmage would I be if I didn't?" speech.)

They'd have to do a better job than UO's initial Player Housing.

The borders of the cities quickly expanded, until monsters were actually spawning in the houses...

Enjoy the lore books and grab as many as you can. The mage guild abilities make the perks highly rewarding.

Before todays maintenance a lvl 15 in a guild of mine had reached lvl 10 in the mage guild. He started at level 10 and was lvl 15 due to the exploration exp when he was finished. He had help but his effort is quite the accomplishment!
