Overload: Is there any benefit to using the light attack projectile?

So with overload, your light and heavy attacks are replaced by empowered versions. Light attacks become thrown lightning balls, heavy attacks become a channelled cone aoe. Is there any real benefit to using the light attack version? The heavy attack overload ticks about as fast as you could throw lightning balls, and I assume it does more damage(since it's a heavy attack).

Anyone with some info or that can clarify this?

Longer range. I've used the light when kiting world bosses where the heavy would just get me pancaked.

So if range isn't an issue, heavy is the better choice? I play a somewhat traditional sorc with a good focus on CC. I like to open with Crystal Shard, few heavy staff attacks, then fire clench. With a boss fight, I would just trigger overload, open with crystal shard, and spam heavy attack overload, using fire clench whenever the boss gets close.

Does this sound like it would be effective at higher levels?

Not for bosses that can't be knocked down or back. This works for a lot of the mini bosses or smaller bosses but most very large bosses are immune to knockdowns and knockbacks.

I mostly use the heavy attack when quest grinding to kill groups quickly. The light attack can be used for kiting, but honestly just whipping out a lightning destro staff does more damage for me and doesn't have a limited resource pool.

I have AoE I'd rather use than the heavy attack, personally. It's tough to see who yo are hitting because there's no makers on the ground. I prefer the light attack only for range and control.

Which AOE? I'm still a low level so my only option is really wall of elements, but I'm curious what I could pick at later levels.
