Seriously? Still not up? It is a holiday here too, in Latvia and tomorrow I still got to work, even with all the free days others have till 5th including. It's already almost afternoon here..well 1-2 hours still to go, but...it does not change the fact that it is taking ridiculously long time!

Meanwhile, 6 or 7 hours later, 'maintenance' was still ongoing. More tea vicar? Perhaps a slice of cake?

Problem is more about development processes and software branches. Normally software developers have development (often many), testing and production servers.

First you build the patch in development and test it there. Then you test the deployment in test server and after that you patch the production server. Patching production is normally very smooth and quick if everything was done well.

Now you have to have exactly similar software on every server and data up to needed point. This is the hard part, it hardly ever is exactly the same because of data.

In ESOs case it's quite clear (especially when comparing EU and NA servers) that this process has failed. They have successfully patched development and test servers (also NA this time), but EU patch failing 2 times is a problem in this process.

At some point at least EU server has trailed to a branch of it's own (some hotfix or could be pretty much anything). Probably at the moment they have no clear idea about what to do and how to fix it (fixing this kind of issues takes thousands of hours easily). They also can't say any ETA as there (normally professionals do have ETAs as they have done this kind of stuff very often).

So most probably at the moment they are thinking about how to branch EU (and possibly NA) back to same state as test server.

The answer is if they give an estimate and dont meet it then people will scream bloody murder. Here is an idea. Dont let a game control your life. Go shopping the game will still be here when you get home.

I don't give a *** about all the *** on this forum. I want my ETA.

Just because all forums have a bunch of kids on them...

It's funny, the first quote sounds just like my kids when they can't get something they want.

    Pot, meet Kettle

First time you see an adult using curse words or is it the first time you see an adult dumbing down there syntax to make it more understandable for kids?

Neither, it's the 'I don't care why I shouldn't have it, I want it and I want it now' attitude that I'm (thankfully) not used to seeing in adults. I had an image of a foot being stamped when I read "I want my ETA"

To all these people who are pointing out how long other games maintenance takes explain this, the US server patch was done in approximately five hours. The EU server patch is now on the second attempt and so far has taken nearly 6 hours with no end in sight. Explain please?

They are on different computers. Things can happen with one that did not happen with the other. Not everything always goes perfectly all the time. They have communicated it is taking longer than expected.

Yes but it's the same game and the same patch.

They have told us its taking longer than expected? Oh, that's Ok then. I'll send them some more cash as a thank you.

I agree, if both servers are in exactly the same state prior to the patch what difference does it make? if it all went fine for the NA server they shouldn't be encountering any problems on the EU server.

In a perfect world two of the same servers with the same patch will act the same way. We do not live in a perfect world.

I'm not quite sure why people think this, if I take two identical computers and install identical software on them they should react in the same way, if there is a hardware issue such as a failure of a component then that's a different matter. In that case just post an update telling us that and not all this "unforeseen problem" junk.

It's not luck with machines, do we turn our TV on and cross our fingers that it works? Not walk under a ladder in case it means our car won't start? No. Unless there is a fault 2 servers running the same software should take the same patch without issue.
You clearly don't work in IT. The first fallacy in your post is that there's no such thing as 2 identical computers with identical software on them. There will always be differences.

As far as the differences between the NA and EU servers that may cause them to behave differently when performing maintenance and applying a patch, they're not pointing to the same database. That, in and of itself, can be enough to cause one update to have issues that the other doesn't. Depending on what's being updated, if the script encounters bad or unexpected data, it can cause all kinds of problems. I've seen an installation fail because an inner join was used when an outer join should have been used - it didn't cause any problems in one environment because that environment's DB had corresponding entries in the second table for every object in the first table that the inner join was being applied to. In a different environment, however, not all of the objects had corresponding entries, so it caused massive problems.

Way can't you (ZOS) give out an ETA when the servers are back up? It's not like to have to keep the ETA as its an ETA and by definition is just a guess. But it would help us costumers to be able to plan our life better.

I would like to know if I have time to go do the grocery shopping or clean the house before the servers are back up or not for an example.

Sure this was said, but if they give an ETA in an acutal time and not just in hours the second that clock hits 1 minute past they will start get hammered by callers, emails, and posts complaining.

The same thing happens in my position. When we have an outage if we give an ETA with a time tied to it our queues blow up as soon as that time rolls around

Yes. They should provide ETAs, but they should do it in terms of "we expect this maintenance to last approximately 2-4 hours" and so on. Then, if things seem to be taking longer than they expected, they can provide an update along the lines of "the maintenance is taking longer than expected, and we'll provide you with an updated ETA when we've got one". That's pretty much the expected standard in my world (meaning in the sector of the IT industry that I work in).

Way should anyone cater to those that does not understand what the word estimated mean? Who is that stupid that he expected some one to turn up at 8:00 charp when he sad that he would arrive around 8:00? That is what ETA means around that time.

Educate people that don't know better. Don't cater to the lowest IQ on the forum...
