The simple solution, make an Asian server. They would make boat loads of money from the Asian MMO crowd (like blizzard did) and you would have a pretty good connection to it.

No, Oceanic area has a better connection to the US than it does to anywhere in Asia. Something went down in the ocean a while back (some Asia earthquake) and has never been replaced - Asia is a no-go. We need a server in NZ or Sydney.
Oh wow, didn't know that. That really sucks :( Because Japan has some EPIC internet quality....however, an Asian server would still be good for everyone because ZoS could make more money, and POSSIBLY HIRE MORE STAFF .... ( being an optimist here =P )

Its the same reason why SEA dont want to play on Oceanic server. We have better ping and lag on the NA server. The problem for NA server tho is the maintenance timezone. An Oceanic server on NA.

As an Aus player, I can understand both sides of the coin, god knows I've played MMo's long enough to know. As an Aus player I would be more than content with an oceanic server based in America, just with different maintenance times, lots of MMo's have done this, and we have been fine with it- its not the lag that irritates us, we are used to that, its the not being able to play 2+ days a week, for example this week we are set to lose 3-4 prime time days due to maintenance.

We just want some notice, ignoring the AU demands as a company that is supposed to cater to its player base is kind of silly, not so much as a comment saying they will look into it, pretending the problem isnt there is one way to create more haters for your game. Even so much as pushing back the maintenance times 1-3 hours would allow most AU players enough time to get some stuff done and would reduce complaints significantly..

On the other hand it isn't going to matter much if the server is down all the time ... 5 1/4 hours.

The sad reality is that the market for Australia/Oceania just can't support a server on its' own.

SWTOR tried to have one, as @Stormynature said, and it was shut down due to too low population.
No the population on the Oceanic PVE server was fine - it was actually in the top range of server population - it was shut down due to the whining from the PVP server guys. Even the RP server had a better population than the PVP server (there were three Oceanic servers - PVE, RP, and PVP)...if they'd just shut up and not whined the Oceanic servers would still exist, because all but the PVP server was doing fine.

They shut down all three Oceanic servers because of them.

Curious indeed. For when I played SWTOR, I had quite screwed up sleeptimes, so I even had characters on the APAC server (PvE), playing during peak times for Oceania, and the thing that always struck me was that it was always much deader than a EU/NA-equivalent.

    Incorrect.

It has been proven multiple times over in the past 7 years that the Oceanic Demographic English speaking population is just as big as America, just far more spread out across islands.

The real reality is, it requires strong marketing and advertising in this demographic which no company has been able to pull off or put the money in to pulling it off due to being spread across several different governments, where EU and USA fall under one government.

What countries are you adding into this mix to justify your numbers?

Oceanic timezone consist more than those 'oceania' countrues. You are an idiot to use it to prove nothing.

Yeah, Oceania timezones contain more than just Oceania countries... But you can't really count on any much from East Asia, because of reasons already listed in earlier posts.

,,,one government? Qué? Even if the European Union have a say about most things in most of Europe, there's still national laws regarding marketing and whatnot. So that really wouldn't be much different to how it is in Oceania... except for the fact that Oceania got a big bunch of miniature nations where it probably would be directly cost-ineffective to do any marketing.

I don't understand why they don't start around 0200-0300 EDT. This would be 1600 AEST. This would more fairly share the down time between NA and Oceanic users.

No, there were over 100-150 people on fleet during peak times same as it was on some of the US servers (and they retained the US servers while canning the Oceanic ones).

This is actually want I meant in the original post. I would not expect ZOS to locate the server physically in that region for many of the financial and regulatory reasons pointed out.

By the way, I live in Hawaii and work nights, so this would not be just for Aus/NZ...

All they needed to do was place the NA server in LA, currently it's located in central US(New York) so we're hovering around 230-260 optimally. If they moved it to LA we could shave off maybe 50-70ms, infact I see no reason they'd put it in central US who exactly does it benefit having it in central besides from Americans alone, Europeans shouldn't even be playing on the NA server regardless because they have their own server.
Eu server is located in Texas for some dumb reason right now ..... -_-

    100% agree.

Notice how Singapore and Malaysia aren't in those lists yet have how many people living in those countries with over half of their populations being able to speak English at some level due to it being forced on them as a second language.

These are only two areas that also fall in to an Oceanic timezone, there is many more densely populated areas just like this, that have a high amount of English speaking population.

However, this was not the point of my post.

Maybe the Microsoft Azure servers will be online in AU when it launches on Xbox One : )
If this will even matter, I don't know.

Eso will not utilize Azure which I could go on for days about being such a bad decision. They should have dropped playstation like a rock and jumped in with Microsoft like Respawn/Titanfall did. PC servers could have been running on Azure right now which would mean 0 downtime and tons of happy AUS and EU people. One of the Respawn engineers basically is a celebrity now for showing how awesome this works. Google Jon Shiring and follow him on twitter if you are not already.

Xbox and ps4 servers will be hosted on US soil and not utilize the cloud at all, unless ZOS makes thier own which would never happen.

I would truly love an oceanic server. The latency in game with a ping of 240ms is pretty frustrating at times.Too often I find myself pressing a button twice because I don't see anything happening in a timely manner only to have the character eventually perform that action twice. Apart from the general delay in animations/ skills, some weird things happen in game: character gets frozen casting, abilities don't work, character taking damage from aoe attacks that from my side I've clearly dodged. Sadly I don't think I can justify paying a sub for a game that is pretty frustrating to play.

Also it has been said that Blizzard was offered a cheap deal by an emerging Australian ISP to set up servers here (cost offer would have been less than to run in US) but they still refused apparently.

Still it is nice to see that there is progress in this department: League of Legends and Diablo 3 have oceanic servers!

I fully support having Asian / Oceanic servers. When people see that companies support their regions, they tend to slowly come, but if they see that the companies do not support their regions, they tend to get turned off.

Thank you for pointing that out. I'm Malaysian travelling around the region for business purposes. Yes, apologies for our government's incompetency regarding the plane incident.

    Anyways.

The two countries mentioned has above 80% of English literacy, given that these are previously British colonies. The influx of immigrants and corporate globalisation has also caused surrounding countries' English literacy to rise exponentially over the past decades.

These countries include the following. (Relevant to proposed server location)
    - Indonesia
    - Thailand
    - Vietnam
    - Myanmar
    - India (Definitely English speaking, controversial to topic relevance as location in between of NA and Oceanic)

However, as far as I'm concerned, I have no problems with latency playing from these countries. Even Indonesia that apparently does not have direct cable connection seems to perform very well. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

And I really don't want to be given a lowly populated server which will be shutdown in months. Many games have attempted to place a local server, with MOBA genre being the only ones able to perform decently, exceptional cases are MapleStory or other casual asian genres. (With recent reports that it is losing population) For some reason, the hardcore MMORPG market is more tuned to having grind tests from China, Taiwan and South Korea. Not to mention P2P is frowned upon, given that most games offered are F2P with pay to win/dress-up systems. It's not that they can't afford it. I have a friend (big ES fanboy) who earns more than me, yet when ESO is mentioned, he would rather stick to D3 solely because ESO is P2P. It's branded into their brains that games should be F2P. Even going as far as labelling WoW players stupid for paying.

These are my observations over a decade of MMO gaming; demographics are solely based on high school Geography/History and reading the news & CIA surveys.

Don't depend on Wikipedia, you'll lose out. The world changes faster than people can update the history. Just my two Septims.
People keep telling me they're gonna buy me an ale. They never do.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's culture. And the Elves.

The continued maintenances ruining two nights of gameplay is why i will not sub anymore, i'm not paying for a game i cannot play.
