Well, i WAS angry, that is true. The situation already happened about 2 weeks ago, when i stated (here on the Forums) what my problem was and everyone and his dog told me i couldnt win this fight without syphoning. And yes, i really, believe it or not, had used all my skillpoints up to that point, even including a bunch i got out of Cyrodiil. I maxed dual wield and bow, medium and heavy armor, 2 craft skill trees, shadow and assassin, maxed my race (mandatory as a khajit assassin) and even put a few points into the guild skills. So, i did indeed have to reskill(after being assured by many nightblade players ingame and here that there is no way to win this fight without a solid base in syphoning)
So, what i say is: How is it play as you want when most people agree that its mandatory to have one skilline to be able to finish the main quest?
I am long past that quest now and having access to VR content made it much easier to collect more skyshards. nevertheless, at that specific moment in the game there was for me NO way but to reskill.

It's still "play as you want," because you can play with a completely ineffective build. The rest of us, who thought, "Gee, maybe I'll lose health at some point during my gaming experience," didn't have any issues.

    First....this thread already exists:
    http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/87004/play-how-you-want-really#latest

Second....this is my reply in that thread...and I'll copy/pasta it over here:
    I'm playing how I want.

For instance, I'm evenly distributing my stat points across all three stats.

I'm wearing a 3/2/2 mix of all three armors, varying only on my class choice and cherry picking the passives out of all three armor trees that I like.

My Nightblade, for instance is a dual wielding siphon build with nothing at all from the assassin branch. 3 medium pieces of armor, two light, two heavy. I have an alternate bow build, but I'm not sure I like that all too much. Currently at lvl 17 and rising.

Am I eenweencible? No, but I'm pretty damn effective, even in a mob of mobs. It's a fine line, I'll say that much...but when I pull off the dance without a hitch....it's a REALLY good feeling to see all the bodies around me.

My dunmer DK isn't a vampire and will NEVER be one....and I follow the same basic build as the above NB. 3/2/2 in heavy/med/light, evenly distributed stats and two handed/sword and board. Currently at lvl 27 and rising.

I have a lvl 17 redguard templar, sword and board all the way. Heavy/med/light. Cherry picking between the sun and healing trees. Kinda going for the traditional battle cleric type build with this one.

None of them are PvE gods, and I could care less about PvP. The only time I'm ever going into Cyrodiil, if at all, is to hunt down some skyshards should I need to.

So yeah....you CAN play how you want and still be effective. You won't steamroll stuff unless you play smart....at least -I- don't...but I kinda like it like that.

Bottom line? the TLDR of it all? If it's fun for you....don't let someone else tell you you're doing it wrong.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

There is just one flaw in your logic. What if you encounter a boss early on that you cant defeat with a certain skillset? for example: playing a nightblade and not having the syphon tree skilled makes it impossible to defeat at least three boss mobs of the main and guild quest line. I HAD to respec, otherwise i would have had to level ahead of all my main and guildquest. And i spent more than 15k on it.

my first toon and main is a nb, and i have never ever used any siphoning skills on bosses, and i never ever had a problem

Did you think this was a next generation virtual reality sandbox where you could literally do anything you want, anytime you want?

It's advertising. It isn't meant to be taken in the most narrow, literal sense possible. Diet soda claims to help you lose weight, but if you drink 15 of them a day, you don't go complaining to Coca Cola when you put on some extra organic insulation.

I can't believe you are complaining that the game has been advertised as play as you wish, then it allows you to make a less than effective build. It sounds like you had been playing how you liked but couldn't figure out how to beat a boss.

FYI, just because "everybody" says you have to do something one way doesn't mean its the only way. Just probably the easiest.

I don't see any flaws in my logic. There's even a handy "tip" on one of the loading screens that suggests, if you're having trouble with a quest, to level up a couple of times and try again. With that handy dandy tip in your pocket, if you feel you absolutely need one of the class abilities to complete a quest, then you should gain a skill point by simply gaining one extra level. Then you'll unlock that skill

I don't see how my logic is flawed, though.
The moment you call someone stupid, or try to display your opinion as "fact", you lose all credibility.

Yeah. Right. So im supposed to level 5 to 15 levels ahead to be able to tackle a quest i couldnt tackle at the correct level because the skillset made it impossible. If THAT is play how you want works...then it is pretty flawed

Since you wont listen to anyones advice I'll tell it to you straight. If you're stuck at a lvl 5 ANYTHING, you suck. No wonder you had to use cheat books for single player games. Seriously. You wanted to be a jerk. I'll tell you the truth.

    a) try to improve your reading comprehension. levelling 5 to 15 levels ahead of a certain quest level does NOT mean i am stuck at level 5 anything.
    b) read the thread.
    c)keep your insults for yourself.
    d) you wanted to look like an idiot, mission accomplished.

dude...give it a rest, honestly we have offered advice i even offered the ORIGINAL poster and the same goes for you some help if needed. though i don't tend to help jerks and those who wont listen to reason. I have never had any trouble on here and i solo everything outside of the dungeons that require reams.

you can just about do what ever you want all races skills weapons the only difference is racial , if you put a point in the wrong place so what there are that many out there points to get I mean only 300 of them ,
we all will put points where they not needed , just one of them things .
oh wow or perhaps eso could put up lists with a few types of general builds for all the races so you can follow , or let you decide because over time it wont matter. so your wish list be eso must post all builds so anyone can decide what and how they play , and video guides to match , and also a pair of comfy slippers and tea/coffe not forgetting the Jaffa cakes, oh my the care bear league

You're actually coming off as a jerk in the entire thread, not just any one comment. Which is probably why you're being met with hostility.

That being said, if you're having trouble with a fight, change what you're doing until you find something that works. It really is as simple as that. I want a straight healing build, however I realize that resto staff damage isn't going to work for everything, therefore I've invested in some dps skills. Trolls specifically were giving me a ton of trouble, so I switched up what I was doing for them specifically.

Having a heal that you've invested one or two skill points into out of the 320+ that we get, is a good idea. Some fights will likely need a heal. That doesn't mean you can't play like you want.. it means a couple of fights with extra hard mobs result in a need for a heal on your bar. You still get to pick which heal, or not to have a heal at all and over-level.. or keep playing with dps skills until you find one that provides enough mitigation/stunning or what have you to get through the fight.

I can't think of an MMO in the last 20 years that gives one so much freedom to tweak one's character along the way, as one ~learns~. Nor a game, that you take off on any direction and stumble in all sorts of quests, plots and nooks and crannies to explore. I respected once at level 12, and fixed 'my mistakes' since I was all over the place, and now my character is playing instantly 50% better. Immediately went back to a few bosses who trashed me mercilessly when I didn't have a clue. I think that is what ESO offers, freedom to apply what you learn along the way.
If not good enough, we are all free to play something else.
