Gaming problems @ 4K resolution

Maintenance for the week of February 24:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – February 24

Good morning,

I use to run this game @ 2560x1440 with no issues with my machine. I've recently upgraded to a 32 inch 3840x2160 display. The game is now crashing on me saying that I have run out of memory.

My systems specs are as follows.

Asus Sabertooth X79
Intel Core i7 3930 @ 4.2Ghz
16GB of 1866 memory
AMD Radeon R9 290x
1500w Power supply
2 x 960GB SSD drives
Razer Mamba Mouse
Razer Deathstalker keyboard
Razer Tiamat 7.1 head phones

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
  • arisythila
Oh yes, Running Windows 8.1 64bit as well.

One 290x is not enough to get playable framerates at 4k. You will need at least 2 of them, possibly 3 (although since ESO isn't a massive GPU hog, 2 would probably be ok for this game). That said, that wouldn't cause it to crash. But ESO is a 32-bit application which means it can't use more than 4 gigs of RAM. It will crash if RAM usage exceeds that. You might have to wait until there is a 64-bit client.

In addition, until there is a proper full screen mode, Crossfire/SLI won't work well with the game anyway. Running on one card (even a 290x or a 780ti) is going to give you a slideshow at 4k.

This is the only gave that I've had issues with running @ 4k and be playable... I am able to play for about 3-4 minutes before it crashes. BF4 plays GREAT @ 4K with mantle enabled as well on Ultra settings.

Screen shots attached on the error I am getting. It's seems to be Windows that complains about things... I do see where the 4GB stuff could run into an issue.

TESO is an 32 bit application, running 4k resolution might require more memory than 32bit can handle

Until the game has proper SLI/Crossfire support, I wouldn't even think about 4k resolutions as an option. Even 1440p is likely to suffer without good multi-gpu support unless you are running the best gpu available.

Rousseaux, I went from the 2560x1440 monitor to the 4K and had problems AFTER the swap. I do not think its Windows 8.1, just think that the game may not be able to handle what I am throwing at it.

BF4 has a 64-bit client if I'm not mistaken. 32-bit applications have a hard limit of 2GB/4GB (if LAA) even on a 64-bit OS. ESO is LAA, so that means it can use up to 3GB on a 32-bit OS and 4GB on a 64-bit OS. I don't think you're going to be able to run 4k with that limitation.

What does task manager/resource monitor show for your RAM usage when you get that message? Is the computer itself actually low on RAM, or is the 32-bit subsystem just running out?

I do think Zenimax needs to get us a 64-bit client though. This needs to happen soon.

    Please review images posted.

Machine has 16GB of memory, I have not checked in game usage, will do that now... Game is very smooth on the highest settings @ 3840x2160 @ 60Hz

It doesn't matter if you have 16GB of memory. Currently, ESO is a 32-bit application, which means as far as ESO is concerned, you have 4GB (since you're running on a 64-bit OS).

More pictures, which appears to be a game issue. When my systems memory hits about 4.4G of in use memory, the game crashes, So this appears to be a game issue with 32Bit versus 64bit.

@Saerydoth I understand PAE, etc etc.

I guess what I am getting at, there is an issue, and it needs to be fixed. Simply telling a customer that "Oh yeah, sorry it doesn't work on your machine" is far from acceptable.

All modern machines these days are 64-bit, It doesn't make a difference to me if a company wants to make their stuff 32-bit, but they need to make sure that it works, and works correctly.

    Thats all.

ESO have anything to say about this?

ESO is only using 700-something MB in that second screenshot. So this isn't an issue with the client using too much. Remember, ESO is capable of using 4GB on a 64-bit system (meaning the eso.exe process itself) before it runs out of memory and crashes.

So what you're getting is something else entirely. Maybe you're running out of video memory?

I have a dual monitor setup, main monitor is 2556x1440 which I run ESO perfectly on. Have had one crash to desktop since started betas in January.

It handles that res fine, can have say my Sat TV running on second 1440x900 and ESO still carried on going without a glitch.

I have a 4GB GTX 670 and run everything on highest settings possible

I'm currently running at 4K and have been since beta.
Running 2 780's in my old x58 mobo, CPU i7 i920 with 6gb RAM and it really works great, even off 1 GPU. Average around 50 FPS, should really be nice when we get SLI working. Also running Win 8.1 64-bit

I just tried to lower my resolution to see if its the video card that is running out of memory with no luck...

    Still the same issue.

@Ryanmc_ESO Thanks for your input here.

I've only got a single R9 290X which is the top of the line for AMD It has 4GB on the graphics card. I have a second R9 290X I can throw in here to see if that helps.

    Thanks,

I think I am going to try to wipe my machine, and reload the machine from the ground up. See if that helps out at all.

If you have tsaa/msaa maxed, remove it or reduce to x2 max.
You shouldn't need it at that resolution anyway.

TESO doesnt support any kind of non shader AA, if he has MSAA turned on in the drivers it will do nothing.

Running out of memory seems like you might have a bad memory stick or if your overclocking your ram try defaulting it in bios. (disable XMB profile) I highly doubt your actually running out of vram or system ram. 4GB is plenty of frame buffer for ESO at 4K.
  • arisythila
So reformatted my machine. base load, with only drivers (recent) loaded on it.

ESO still gives me the problems of "this computer is out of memory"

I ran memtest86 on the machine to rule out bad memory, I also ran prime95 on the machine to rule out bad processor. I've also take processor/memory back to factory, and ran the same tests.

I've tried gaming at 640x480 @ medium settings, with no luck at all. I've disabled AA, i've ran it enabled.

This is the only game that I play that does this, which leads me to believe that it is the game causing my issues, not my machine. I can load this thing up full of memory usage, and not have any problems with it (video/photo editing).

Not sure what else to do.

    Thanks,
