Skill books at level 45 and beyond?

My character is currently ranked at Vet 2 but I haven't seen a skill book since early in Coldharbor. I have clicked several dozen bookshelves since then but no skill increase. I am not claiming it is a bug, but I am curious if anyone else has experienced such a drought? Is it a leveling thing (i.e. no skills from books over a certain level)?

I'm assuming your skills themselves aren't already 50?

Yes. There are plenty of skills that have skill books that are nowhere near 50 on my character.

I read in another thread that the XP from books is a static amount and that you don't really gain a level per book, but X amount of XP per book. That is supposedly why it gets harder to find a book that levels a skill, you would need to be right at the edge of leveling for a book push it over at high level.

    The thread is here:

Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification.

I am VR8 and I just got an Enchanting skill book yesterday... took me from enchanting 36(close to 37) to enchanting 37(close to 38). They give you exactly 1 level, regardless of your currently level, and you CAN still find them.

There are a limited number of books and it's just RNG as to getting one that you havent already used yet. Which is why when you get to the upper 40's and higher they are so rare, by then you've discovered 90% of them. When you click on a bookshelf, the game rolls for a skill book(rare to begin with), then rolls to see which one you found randomly(you can find one you've already used).

I deliberately avoided reading skill books until I had most maxed and a few skills in the 40s. I'm using an add-on which lets me know when various skills are increased, and by what amount.

The skill books I find increase the skill exactly enough to advance it to the next level, regardless of how much is needed (provided the skill isn't already at 50). I haven't ever found a skill book that only increases a skill part of the way to the next level.

They are few and far between. I am of the mind that it is mostly because most of my skills are 50 already. I did find one that advanced my alchemy to 18 at VR6.

Some of it is a due to me as well. I use to check all books. Then since there are so few upgrades, i barely check any. Which of course causes me to find even less

What I noticed is that a skill book gives you exactly to XP you would need to pass your current level if you just started it. So you always gain a level, no matter what.

    Yup.
Finite number of books + RNG = not much left to find by the time you get to VR assuming you've been checking shelves throughout the leveling process.

There are a set number of skilled books in the game. Once you read one, you may very well find the same book again but you won't get credit for it as you have already read it. It's possible you have already found most of the books at this point.
