I logged in this morning and my High Elf suddenly had numbers before and after her name and there was a 'rename' button under her, instead of the 'play' button.
I am a little confused as to what was wrong with her name, I got the name by typing my own name into an elven name generator, I have two other characters, both elves, with the same surname. Can someone explain why I had to change my name please? I don't think there was anything that broke any rules, It was supposed to be an Elven name. I feel a bit put out by this to be honest.

update: I got into the game and found I had a mail from someone official stating that my name was in violation of the terms of service! I honestly do not see how that is possible, it also states that this 'was my second warning and further violations will result in me losing my account'.
This is extremely upsetting, I have not had any warnings for anything, I have no idea why my name was 'bad' I just feel really upset now.

The possible cause is that the name you choosed is copyrighted.
I.E. used in a novell / other videogame, etc...

This is a legal restriction (independant of Zenimax will).

It's actually what copyright are made for.

It's obviously a mistake.
Right now I suspect they have a lot on their plate - just put in a ticket about it and chill.
- If you got it from a generator I guess you weren't really attached to it? but the ominous 'second warning' deserves an appeal for sure.

To be honest I did think it must be a mistake, how do I appeal? I am more upset about the 'second warning' which is completely untrue, than about the name to be honest. I can't see how a name from a random generator can be copyrighted but I suppose anything is possible, thanks for the replies.

I would contact CS and inquire more on this. Even send them the link to where you got it from with the name generator. Also I was doing some checking and the first name was coming up in some lord of the rings generators

Enelya Sirfalas is a person's name, according to Google. I guess they may have reported you.

I would not be surprised if most name from a random elven name generator are copyrighted.

Those generators use very small source of data (like J.R.R. Tolkien Lord of The Rings / Silmarilion appendix) and thus the number of combination is quite limited.
Additionally those sources ARE copyrighted

Many video games used the same sources to create NPC names and did copyritgh them also...

A possible reason for name change might be due to an interpretation in a different language which is causing the breach.


It's at this point I realise the name is in elvish and sit here wondering if other elves have been offended and flagged you

Ok thanks for your help, maybe if they had actually said WHY the name was unacceptable I might have had a clue! As for this 'second warning' I have no idea whatsoever why they have said that, but given how useless support is I will probably never know. I am more concerned now with being randomly kicked from the game every 30 minutes or so with the message 'an error has occurred'
and I have to restart the whole game or I can't log back in. *sigh*
