I couldn't find an appropriate Category/Forum for this (really need a general discussion section or something, then again, maybe I missed it) so I'm posting here. If you want to get straight to the point skip to the list/numbers. tldr at bottom.
So, I haven't seen a whole lot of threads (once again, probably just missed them) striking out on a positive note. Mostly just people complaining and reporting bugs/glitches, which is all fine and well. Have to know where the problems are to fix them, etc.
I just wanted to take this time to address some of the things I enjoy about this game. No game is perfect (especially at the start) and a lot of people forget that. I try to keep that in mind when weighing the good and the bad (much like tipping a waiter well even though food was slow getting to you (observe that it's busy and/or the cooks are slacking, etc). Moving on...
I played many RPGs growing up (Final Fantasy, Legend of Dragoon, Baldur's Gate, etc) but one that always stood out to me was Elder Scrolls. I started with Morrowind and played it to the point of knowing where everything in the game was and the fastest way to get a new character started, all the neat little lore pockets, etc. The exploration and openness in Morrowind was such that when I started WoW, all I did for the first week was swim around the coasts (and die, a lot) of each continent looking for treasure, underwater shrines (went Undead solely for underwater breathing, mostly for this reason) and other hidden goodies. I was sadly disappointed and moved on.
Flash forward, a veteran of both Oblivion and Skyrim at this point and having grown disappointed with WoW, I looked to ESO to combine the two in interesting ways and that's where our journey, truly begins...
After that wall of text (impressed if you made it through all the way), I'm going to try and make this brisk.
What I love about ESO:
1) Customization | I'm speaking specifically of skill/character customization, not so much appearance customization (which is great thing to have but not a huge deal to me). The fact that their are so many customizable aspects of your character is amazing. Something I've always loved was making interesting builds. I've found a plethora of that in ESO and I've only just scratched the surface. If nothing else I'd like to see more customization (maybe one more morph tree for each ability or
another skill tree entirely dedicated to tanking/healing/dps to further define your role and perhaps round your character out).
2) Open World | I'm going to use to cover a broad scope of things including but not limited to: Exploration (lots of interesting things everywhere), ability to quest where you want when you want (no real level restriction, only power restriction) and ability to jump right into a world boss/event and help out seamlessly. In true Elder Scrolls Fashion, I feel like I can go just about anywhere I want when I want and play the game how I want (I believe this was one of the initial goals set when designing ESO). There's a lot to do and a lot of ways to do it (see: Customization).
3) Story | Each zone seems to have a core story that often times is engrossing. It's fun seeing the story play out and how the choices you make impact them (there's also a certain thrill to being unsure how something will turn out and not having the ability to reload a previous save and see the other outcome before making a firm decision, feels much more real) and the consequences of your actions. Wrap that around the much broader main story and you have something delicious.
4) Faction Race | Now this is a bit of a sensitive subject to some people. The ability to play any race on any faction only if you preordered was controversial but I think an appropriate move. Think about it. Wouldn't it be racists to assume that all Nords think the same way? Perhaps. Surely, there would be some who's views were more in line with another faction. I think limiting the races on opposing factions to preorders brings a much more realistic ratio (and perhaps other aspects) to the game. At least from a RP perspective.
5) Skill Point Abundance | You get them from everywhere. Skyshards, leveling, quests, etc. Some people are going to have too few skill points and some too many. Me personally, I have too many right now but I'm using a much more strict build and have respec'd a few times to cut unfavorable skills. If anything, I'd like to see skills level up faster so I can use points sooner. Unsure entirely how it works but it seems each skill tree gets more experience for each skill of that tree you have slotted, which then advances each skill. Then again, the pacing could be (and probably is) fine. All that being said, I'd rather have too many skill points rather than not enough. Let's me pick up skills I wouldn't otherwise.
6) Map | The map is a powerful tool. Whether teleporting across the world or just trying to get your bearings. The fact that points of interests/quest hubs change color when they've been completed is awesome. No need to worry about back tracking. Miss something? The map will show tell you what. The mouse over text on completely locations is nice too, offers a reminder of your previous deeds and misadventures. Ability to warp (whether from shrine or anywhere else) is nice. No need for a "Hearthstone" type function (Though I still miss the original Mark and Recall from Morrowind and that would have been a lovely use of it).
Those are the first 6 that came to mind, the 6th being a last minute addition.
The biggest thing for me is customization though. I'd always prefer to see choices increased over decreased.
I ask of any of you to post about what you enjoy. If all people do is talk about what they don't like, the developers will have a strong idea of what to get rid of/change but not what to keep.
Thanks for your time.
tldr: Customization is cool, I like skill points. What do you like?
