Personally I only have experience with Lightning Splash and if I try to cast it too fast I just do a regular staff attack.
With too fast I mean press the hotkey and then immediately after the mouse button. Center of AoE is always at the crosshair and most of the time I shouldn't need to wait for the AoE circle to appear before casting.
