Are NPC "helpers" useless?

I can only assume they don't help because it would take processor power away from the MEGAserver while it tries to keep up with the goldseller spam.

To clarify, there are some NPC companions that are not supposed to help you... They normally perform a 'cowering' animation while you're in combat...

But no, those that ARE supposed to assist you? Glitch out, and often.

Which is particularly frustrating when certain bosses have clearly been designed with NPC assistance in mind.

And yes, Cadwell does indeed rock, when he can be bothered to.

Lyris, Tharn and Sai are all completely worthless when they come with you. It really doesn't make any sense. Really poor design, IMO.

edit: And I'm not even talking about the AI. They do zero damage. They will beat on a single non-elite skeleton for 5 minutes.

Please LOL my comments. I'm an aspiring comedian.

Is anyone else having similar experiences? What the hell is this?

From what I can tell the helpers are there mostly for exposition. It is up to you, not an npc, to complete the quest.

I never even notice the helpers and certainly don't rely on them for anything.

I found the same Lyris stood around as The Haunter of Cliffs demon pounded the crap out of me. I tried kiting with a bow and when she did attack she did nothing to the creature. I realize they want you to earn the kill yourself and not sit back and let the NPC's do it for you while you make a sandwich but still. I would say the npc's are about helpful at times as Lydia was in Skyrim. Lydia and the other npc's always got in your way stood around at times, fell from cliffs and had back tracking issues in their movement.

I've had this with many (if not all) other quests where an NPC accompanies you to fight. They do fight the first mob, but once the mob they have targeted dies it looks like the AI thinks the job is done and it won't attack the remaining mobs. They occasionally do walk up to another mob, but then stand there uselessly letting themselves being hit without fighting back. It's not just the animation that is not working, the NPC really doesn't do any damage.

Oddly, in veteran content the NPCs can pack a pretty significant punch actually.

Working my way through... Daggerfall Covenant zone 2 i think ( ? ) at v6/v7 and my little imp helper can handily take down a mob 1v1 while I deal with the other two.

Suddenly I was no longer dying every time my shadowy disguise failed.

The Snake Girls are a fantastic boss for a full party. I mean, I've said this before, and I'm not about to stop now. Their hold and generate spheres attacks, their cone attack, and their pulse attack are all fantastic for a full party...

...and have absolutely no place in single player content.

It takes about 10 hits and 2 silver bullets for the Ball of Pain on those mobs... very easily soloable once you figure out how....
The statement "if you put enough monkeys behind enough typewriters... sooner or later one will produce the works of Shakespeare" has sadly been proven utterly wrong by the internet...
