You have been marked as a bot - feature

My approach: give the community an effective tool to hunt down bots.

The idea: add a dedicated bot option to the report player options. If a player reports another player this way on the marked players screen a window appears to enter a captcha or answer a silly question. If the marked player fails to do so within e.g. 60 seconds he gets disconnected from the server.

This happens additionally to the report being sent to zenimax for further investigation. Life of bot farmers would be so much more annoying if they would have to reconnect every 5 minutes...

I am aware that developing such a feature is out of zenimax's scope, but I'm just dreaming a little bit. And yes there would be a certain troll potential for this feature, but I'd pay this price anytime looking at the current situation.

What do you guys think?

Ppl would abuse this feature every time they get mad coz they not getting loot.

You have to file a legit report before that window appears. It's not like you do that just to troll because you are submitting your own details as well.

Besides: no windows in PvP and towns.

the idea to have some kind of "security system" between the send-report and the zenimax-support-check is great.
the captchas could be time based, so that you wont have to solve 50 captchas because 50 players reported you in 5 minutes. instead there would be just one, and after that there would be half an hour protection against further reports.
and even then, if you fail that captcha (maybe you were afk), there should be some kind of loot and mail lockdown (even after re-login), so that affected players cant send spam or lootbot nodes, until they solve the captcha.

a system like this would help zenimax to sort out the false-alarms before it turns out to be a problem for the legit-farmers.

Ppl would abuse this feature every time they get mad coz they not getting loot.

How would that help them if the players are not bots? They will simply enter the captcha and the reporter will look like a derp filling wrong reports.

Your point is not valid because you assume that the reported player gets disconnected. He doesn't.

That is like curing the disease by killing the patient. In theory the idea sounds great, but it would get annoying quick. A rapid response human, in game, GM would be nice, they could look at the area/players in question and deal with it from there. No need to even bother legitimate players with annoying 'humanity verification'.

Like I said: people still have to file the report. Just for the chance to get you disconnected?

I doubt it's going to happen very often.

And I fully agree, but it's just not happening. And that's the actual problem.

Bots are pretty smart it wont take long till they get around those types of things. Been playing lineage 2 before this, u guys dont know whats botting till u go there and how useless this sort of thing can be.

1 - Captchas suck - for various reasons that any google search will uncover.

2 - The abuse potential is high. Amazingly enough, I sometimes am NOT at my keyboard. I park myself somewhere apparently safe and go make myself a cup of coffee. I should not HAVE to be at my keyboard if I am doing nothing - but anyone could start tagging people standing around as 'bots' and they would fail your captcha thing because they got up to take a bio break.

So there is a troll who reports you and you get disconnected. So what?

Why do people assume they get auto banned if they miss the captcha OR question? That is written nowhere.

Additionally the guy who reported you has to submit his own details so I doubt he will be doing it very often.

I played a chinese (beta) game that had captchas in it and it was not fun. "Ok we are attacking someone. WHY CAN'T I MOVE? WHAT'S GOING ON?" "Oh, hold on... I've got to do this math captcha.

    1/2 an hour later...
    "WHY CAN'T I MOVE? WHAT'S GOING ON?" :D

Why, again, should another player have the power to force my disconnect?

You can doubt all you want that people will do stupid things that are tied to their account - you will be wrong, but you are certainly free to doubt. My 20+ years of online gaming (yes, back when you had to dial in to a BBS and everything!) have taught me to never underestimate the willingness of a certain subset of players to abuse any in-game feature.

I'm sure it can be done without blocking all actions. Besides 98% of the players won't be affected since it's only triggered by a report.

This is a pretty terrible idea. One I would expect to see in a f2p Asian grindfest full of OTHER terrible ideas. People would abuse that feature, OP. Why? Because some people are ***. Why grief people who are trying to finish a bugged quest? Because they can.

They have to submit the report. According to my knowledge zenimax already punishes this kind of false report behaviour.

You are turning a disconnect in some serious drama. Probably because you think it's gonna happen every hour. For reason above I highly doubt that.

Once again: it's not click click no harm done. Have you ever submitted a report? Your account name goes straight to zenimax.

Extremely easy to monitor trolls if they hand in false reports all the time.

Besides what is the abuse? Some troll marks you, you enter the captcha and then you are e.g. 30 minutes on cooldown. If he does it too often zenimax busts him like they already do with false report trolls.

I fail to see the benefit of putting in a tool that can be abused, for the minimal possible benefit of making a few bots disconnect for a few moments.

Especially if false reporting is an actionable offense. Decent folk won't use the tool, because they won't want to mistakenly tag someone and then get noted as a false reporter. Jerks will gleefully use the tool - because that's what jerks do.

You can continue to think it's a great idea. I don't. And I doubt very much that the devs & customer service want to deal with the flood of "why the hell am I being forced to type a captcha or get disconnected just because I want to sit in the bank and chat with my guild???" posts.

    A scenario:

A castle in Cyrodil. A wave of besiegers charge.
Then freezes as they all have to fiddle with captcha fields when the oppossing force does mass reporting of them all.

    Don't think that can happen?

Then you haven't been playing MMOs very long.

60 seconds? Mate, I'm a middle aged woman with arthritis who sometimes has to take a loo break meaning I will be away from the computer for a good few minutes. Sure something needs to be done about the bots, but please give us older folks a bit more time than 60 seconds. Wait 'til you get old, you'll see what I mean.

No captchas for PvP and towns. Besides they can be in the 'background', meaning visible but not interrupting your actions.

Besides you have only read the topic I guess. How can a whole wave freeze? Who is reporting them? You know you have to be in 3m distance right?
