So I use food and get no buff icon so how do I know when it wears off?

Question as on the can, the lack of buff and debuff icons is asinine for several reasons, not least because there's NO INDICATION that I can see that tells me food or other buffs have worn off.

I know ESO is a simplified game (I'd use the well tried and tested phrase dumbed-down but apparently that's not politically correct) with very limited choice of skills available at any one time and an almost content-free UI, but fundamental RPG (let alone MMO) features like visible status information like this is absurd.

Is it something an add-on can fix?

Yes. The Foundry Tactical Combat add-on shows your buffs and debuffs including how long is remaining on them.

You can go to your characted panel (keybind to "C" by default) to see all the buffs you have. It's listed in the botton of the panel.

If you are searching for add-ons that display buffs on screen, look at Tamriel Foundry Tactical Combat mod (also a complete HUD with other helpful features) or ZAM Buff Display (not sure of the name but a quick search on these terms on EsoUI or Curse will do)
Look at my profile picture. Visualize that muffin...smelling it...taking a bite...
    Are you hungry now ?
    Good.

IIRC the HP/Magicka/Stamina bar acually extends ins length while you're under the effects of food. That's the visual representation for when the eating buff for food runs out, I can't remember what the drinking ones is (if there is one).

The food buffs, as someone said, show in your Buffs section of the C window. When they wear off, those bars will flash on the screen and shorten. If you are not watching the screen, they may be easy to miss, but quickly checking the C window again will show them and the remaining time. If you choose not to install an add on that shows the buff/timers on the UI

So I just checked and while you have a drink active you will see a white arrow zoom across the boosted stat every now and then to show the regen is being boosted, if you have food used the bars extend.

The GUI in this game is atrocious, where is the setting for showing buffs and debuffs?

There is none. Hence the need for add-ons. Sad, I know. And what's funny, in ESO games you HAVE a buff window on your UI!!

@DanteYoda‌ there are no icons but the UI itself changes as well as visual clues on your character.

Attribute value boots - The attribute bars will grow longer.
Attribute regen boosts - A small arrow will pulse across the bar.
Damage boost - Flame effect around your HP.
Armour boost - Second gold bar around your HP.

Most game effects for ASPD or Enchantments can be seen visually on the character as well.

I guess you folks need giant blinking arrows that point at your hp/stamina/mp bars and say 'LOOK AT ME, I'M CURRENTLY UNDER THE EFFECTS OF A BUFF!' ...because, its already in the game, people. Just like Turelus, above, said.

And yea, just hit C to see the remaining duration.
