Hang during login on Windows 8

On Windows 8 64bit, my ESO hangs on the loading screen after I enter my password but before I get to the loading screen. The little ESO ouroborus logo spins for a few seconds and then stops, and a few seconds after that, the mouse goes from the little ESO arrow to the Windows "hanging" spinner and if I press any key or mouse button, Windows tells me ESO is not responding.

This machine has the latest drivers, etc, etc. I've tried running it as Administrator. This is a fresh install, but I've done "repair" anyway, everything's fine. DxDiag says everything is working.

The same machine plays Diablo III & Bioshock Infinite (the only two games I happen to have loaded on it) just fine, so it's not like the machine just flat doesn't work. The problem is specific to ESO.

This is the first time I've tried to play ESO on Windows, so it's not like it worked and then stopped.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can try?

I'm running it on two different Win 8.1, 64-bit computers with no issues. Are you on 8.1 or 8.0? If the latter, the only thing I could suggest is the 8.1 update and see if that helps, but honestly I'm not sure why it would make a difference in running ESO.

    Should say:

Oh, yeah, I'm sure most people are. If it didn't run on Windows 8, I'm sure we'd have heard about it before now. :) It's got to be something specific to this machine.

So far, 8.0. (I use this machine to connect to work, and insert hand-waving IT mumbling about VPN client not being approved for 8.1 here. Their official motto might actually be "we fear change.")

I doubt the difference between 8 and 8.1 is the cause, but that's all I had :) Hopefully someone else can help out. You're probably right that it is something on that machine, and I hope someone has ideas for you. Could there be a firewall or anti-malware program interfering with it?

Well I said "____ it" and installed 8.1. No change. :(

However, I *did* get it to work.

After some reading on the forums I found my UserSettings file (in Documents\Elder Scrolls Online\live and check the RequestedNumThreads setting.

    What I found was:

    SET RequestedNumThreads "-1"

    So I changed it to:

    SET RequestedNumThreads "0"

And, poof, the game started working. Haven't looked to see how many cores it's using yet.

Interesting. I'm glad you managed to get it running. Congrats!
