Disconnect - Messaging Rate Limit Exceeded?

vithial
vithial
This happens to me every now and then. I have a pretty mediocre ISP and I lag often. Sometimes Ill get combat lag and disconnect, then Ill get an error message that says "messaging rate limit exceeded." I guess when I lag all the commands I hit back up or something? I didnt even type anything in chat before I dc'd. Just checking on if this is a bug or something. Thanks

It happens to me too, followed by a O_o?! moment because I'm never typing when this happens. Just glad an immediate relog works just fine.

Me too, relog works fine. Just putting this out there so they can maybe address the issue. Also making sure im not getting flagged for spam or something because I dont know what the messaging rate limit exceeded means..

This is a freaking sad attempt at deterring gold sellers.

This is seriously not your option that you are going with is it Zenimax??

I really hope not because this is the DUMBEST way and will just *** people off.

These gold sellers are ruining this game so get some coffee and figure this *** out its getting annoying....really annoying.

I've had this happen when sliding down cliffs. It's as if your movement sync messages to the server are being sent through the chat system, and throttled, for some reason.

Keeps happening to me after I lag out occasionally.

I get this a lot; always when I am mounted and talking to TeamSpeak at the same time. I use a push to talk button bound to Numpad 0, which in turn is bound to my mouse with Logitech Gaming Software.

If I speak with only using Numpad 0 on the keyboard whenever I am mounted, I will never get Error 318.

This happened to me when I fell thru the world screaming. I kept screaming until I got "messaging rate limit exceeded" and disconnected.

Im also using teamspeak most of the time. I use left ctrl push to talk. This still happens from time to time. Its quite annoying..

More than one guild leader has been banned for mailing his members, many others report being banned when not even chatting.

So many broken subsystems in this game, ZOS have failed totally to deal with RMT anf bots yet have managed to ban many legit players.

This has nothing to do with chat.

Your client, for whatever reason, is spamming the server with message packets.

To avoid being crippled by the system spam, the server will boot your connection.

I can reproduce it by doing the following:
    • Mount up (sprinting works too, but mount has a 100% success rate whereas sprinting is much lower)
    • Press push to talk (numpad 0 bound to mouse with Logitech Gaming Software) and hold it in
    • Press W and Shift at the same time
Sometimes this is enough, other times a strafe key (A or D) has to be pressed down at the same time.

The amount of time it taked for me to get Error318 while doing this spans from seconds to minutes, but if I keep doing it I will get kicked.

You should report the methods used to reproduce the issue to ZOS.

Done it. I got generic copy/paste reply but hope someone, somewhere took notes. Maybe I should do it again a couple of times just to be sure. :)

So far in this thread we have two people who use the Push to Talk function on Team Speak. I have also read about players getting 318 when they are lagging, thus spamming the same key over and over again to make something happen. This would make more sense, I guess, than the TeamSpeak one.

I'll try to reproduce it with Mumble and Ventrilo. If I can, it's most likely the communication going on between the mouse and Logitech Gaming Software, if not it might be something with TS push to talk.

I'd like to get this solved asap, as I really dislike talking on voice com with keyboard (awful in PvP). I have kids and sometimes a lot of background noise so I don't want to have it voice activated.

With the current banwave going on, I am a little bit worried that some bot at Zeni is going to think I am a goldspammer and autobanning me.

Thats what Im worried about. Also Im not using a mouse button for push to talk. Im using left ctrl. Ive made this post and reported it in game cause Im worried of getting banned. Ive heard of legit people getting banned and the thought of that happening to me after spending all this money and time on this game...dont even want to go there. Where can I report it so that I will get a reply?

I'll save you time and say that it has nothing to do with Vent, Mumble or TS. :)

You might be holding a key in because of those programs, but they are not the reason the server is kicking you.

What kind of keyboard do you have?
Have you tried using numpad 0? It seems like a "safe" key for me, never got kicked even once when using it

I have a razer anansi keyboard. I dont see why the button I choose would make me disconnect? Num pad 0 is on the other side of the keyboard and Id have to take my hand off the mouse for that. Usually I dc and get this message when I lag in combat. Im usually like "im lagging guys" while im trying to attack mob, then I dc.

I'll save myself some time then, you sound like you know what you're talking about. :)
What do you think could be causing it?

I've always thought it was because so many keys were being pressed at the same time (mouse macro key, W, shift and sometimes A or D), but the amount of time it takes for it to happen is inconsistent, as well as it is always happening on the horse but not always by foot.

Why would it sometimes take 5+ minutes and sometimes happen within seconds?

Heh, I'd cry msyelf to sleep every night if I were a developer. ^^

I have exactly the same issue.
How long are you lagging for before you get kicked? I lag for a couple of seconds only.
Which key it is probably doesn't matter at all. :)

I'm not sure I could sufficiently answer why common activities are causing some people to be kicked, because they sure as heck shouldn't be. xD

Do you know how when you hold W, your character will constantly move forward? That's because it's constantly sending a message to the server. This is a normal activity and should be well within the allowed 'message limit'.

Now imagine holding down, for example, 20 keys at the same time (you have 20 fingers, right?). Suddenly, the system is receiving 20x more message packets from your connection. That's causing wayyy too much traffic, so you get booted by the server because it's trying to protect itself.

The thing is, under normal circumstances, you will never be sending anywhere close to that amount of messages to the server, so in theory, you wouldn't shouldn't be kicked.

It's quite bizarre that you're getting kicked for doing normal things. The only thing you can really do at this point is report it (and explain exactly what activity you were performing when you got booted) and then wait for Zeni to respond/fix it.

Its only when I lag. Usually when I lag, im fighting something and I dont want to die. So I would usually spam an attack in hopes they will actually go through and I wont come back dead when the lag spike ends. I quit doing this due to getting kicked after. Where can I report this ? I already sent an in game bug report thing. And I posted this. What more should I do. This IS the customer support forum right? Wheres my support? Im scared of getting banned here due to something beyond my control.

In that situation, all of your inputs would then be sent to the server at the moment the lag ended, which is possibly causing you to hit the message limit in an instant.

Aside from reporting it, there's not much else you can do.
  • vithial
    vithial
Yep that seems to be whats happening, because I dont DC until after the lag spike ends.

Yes, it is, but there isn't enough manpower to individually respond to every single thread created (especially when taking into account how many are just people complaining and not requiring assistance).

You needn't worry about being banned for this. I've been booted for the same reason several times in fact.

@ZOS_MichelleA can we please get a response to this thread? People are being kicked for surpassing the data 'message limit' while performing common activities such as riding horses or fighting creatures.

Ah, then it is not the same issue I am having. I play perfectly fine, then I lag for a little bit and then get kicked. I figured lag was because it takes a little time for the game to catch up.

I doubt there'll be any support for you in here. I had this issue since early access (didn't have it in beta) and been very actively looking for help. It seems to be a issue that's not that common. I think it'll get fixed, but not prioritised.

I am also very worried about getting banned, but I hope that IF such a thing would happen one could always point them towards this forum and the posts here and hopefully they'll unban quickly.

It's not TS, as I reproduced it just now, no voice com activated. Running seems to be safe, mounting is definitely not.
I guess it'll be Cyrodiil by foot for the next couple of weeks. :P

Thanks guys, hopefully this will get looked into. I dont mind the DC's cause its my crappy ISP and Im getting a new one this week. Just scared of getting banned due to "message limit exceeded" error. This does help me feel a bit better that other people have the same issue though.

It might make you feel better to know that I live on a ranch in the middle of nowhere, so I have to use less-than-satisfactory satellite internet. I lag quite often too, and some online games are unplayable because of my unreliable connection at times. That being said, you still should not be getting kicked for it. It's an issue that Zeni needs to look into, without doubt.

And again, don't worry, there's absolutely no risk of being banned for this.
