I'm sure it had nothing to do with people not being able to login, some people logging into the wrong accounts and silly things like that.

I heard someone found an exploit with Faolchu where you can kite him into fire or something so they yanked everything down to patch that out. (jokes)

Watch - you better find something else to do. They haven't even announced how long this is going to take. They have to figure out what is wrong then try to patch it - this is likely to be a very long down time.

Basically people can't login or take forever and two halves to get online.
Their cure is to take the server down on prime time and fix it.
Not sure if such is avoidable if they had scheduled maintenance but taking servers down on primetime doesn't seem like a good idea, though it does not look like they have other choices.

They've only been online a few days, Glitches happen, get discovered, and fixed. It's all part of programming such a massive endeavor.
