"Megaserver" is a bad idea

Please return to the tried and true multiple servers approach to MMORPGs. I'd rather have too few players on a server, where I can still group with my wife and guildmates and have fun, than have too many players making gameplay 100% unplayable (not to mention when the game IS playable, every spawn being horribly overcamped).

Just my two copper.

And my two copper: if people gave up so easily over such things, how many advances would we not have today? Did Thomas Edison give up on the light bulb?

It's only been 1 week since launch, nearly 2 since early access started. I didn't expect the servers to be behaving perfectly at this point.

What are you talking about? There are many servers. It's just not like traditional MMO's where your character is "fixed" on a certain server, you can be placed on any one at any time.

Megaserver is a great idea. Sure it has some bugs right now, but as they continue to fix it and make it better it will be great. I haven't had that many issues grouping. Maybe a few phase issues, but easily fixed by re-logging.

Myrmidons, my brothers of the sword. I'd rather fight beside you than any army of thousands. Let no man forget how menacing we are, we are lions! Do you know what's there, waiting, beyond that beach? Immortality!Take it, it's yours!

I dont think you understand how a megaserver works.

Any lag you're experiencing is likely as a result of this game being brand new and Zenimax needing to work out some issues with having millions of players hammer the megaserver. The only thing segregated realms do is make the world feel empty, which is awful.

I agree that innovation can be a rough road. And I also understand it's only been a week since launch. I love this game still, and I'm not leaving.

But, every problem I've had has stemmed from this "megaserver" nonsense. I'd just like to be able to actually fight a mob or two before 10 people jump on it. And this isn't in the newbie zones or in public dungeons. This is everywhere!

Together with the overload and the technical problems (which may or may not be ironed out), it just seems that I'd be having a much more fun gaming experience on a traditional, less-crowded server.

This kind of server paradigm is not new, and it can actually work really well when properly implemented. But it does have it's flaws - you have to take the whole thing down for maintenance, it's difficult to keep track of problems when they occur because the instancing creates unique environmental circumstances, so person A may have a completely different experience (and problems) than person B, and not compartmentalising player groups (on seperate shards/servers) can damage community spirit ... don't like the people or connection quality in shard A? go to shard B.

I won't claim to know if they did the right thing or not, it's not the sort of thing you can just claim "you did it wrong", but economics typically have the last say and a single customer-facing server is better on a spreadsheet than half a dozen empty servers.

I for one love the megaserver. You might like multiple empty servers, but i love seeing people run around everywhere. Sure, there are problems with the servers now and then, but this is still a new game. You can't throw a tantrum because the servers don't act like your other MMOs which had years to fix themselves.

The problem isn't the megaserver. The problem is people like you.

No, the problem is the megaserver.

We'd be all playing right now if not for shoving everyone into one megaserver (not matter how poorly subdivided/instanced it is).

HELL NO! Empty zones are the bane of MMORPGs.
End the tedious inventory management game.

The OP has a point. At prime time the server is just overcrowded.

I played a few times at the off-times and the game actually feels almost like ES.

There is something to be said about facing a boss all alone or with a trusted friend without twenty others (camping for loot) bringing the boss down in 1.5 seconds.

Okay... I actually agree with that. Other MMO's not so much, but with ESO it feels a lot better with only a few folks around instead of there being more players than NPCs.
End the tedious inventory management game.

Yeah, the new, innovative "megaserver" tech sure is working out great....

The trouble with large high availability server farms is that as long as all the issues are with the individual servers, things are golden, but the moment the issues are with the high availability tech, or key server systems, you have all your eggs in one basket.

There are a lot of MMOs out there which could have been megaservers if they chose. Several have all the databases for all servers on one large SAN, and each 'server' consists of many physical servers which can be moved between 'server' as needed dynamically.

They all take time to bed in though, we'll see what the future holds.

Sounds like you are just looking for a reason to complain.

Also, the Megaserver isn't one single server, one single piece of hardware, it is still several different pieces of hardware (servers) managed in a dynamic, on-the-fly manner.

If you want to play elder scrolls online without other people then you just need to wait two more weeks. You'll have the game to yourself.

At least dividing it in english, german, russian and french "shards". Without restrictions to play in different than he's default shard - sorts multilangual chat spam, makes it easier to handle 4 server sides instead of bloated one. One can wish.

Assigning instances to servers on the fly is easy and proven technology. But is this also true for the one big megaserver database? And we only have some days of data so far... Time will tell ;)
