Who loves the immersion that no nameplates brings?

As an Rper, I dont mind not having nameplates at all. I feel chat bubbles are more important and nessecary than name plates.

The lack of nameplates does not bother me. I have honestly never had any problems figuring out who was an NPC and who was a player character. I've always been able to find the merchants that I need to find. It's not that difficult once you figure out what to look for.

A few clues: Interactable NPC's will have an E to interact with them. Player characters do not. Vendor NPC's usually are standing next to some sort of banner that tells you what they are selling (the exception being the wandering merchants along a road). Most NPC's are static and don't move around.

I usually don't buy into the immersion arguments to justify less convenient methods. But this is one case where I do believe realism triumphs over convenience.

Having to actually find things brings a lot to this game's depth and sense of realism, and I would hate to see that compromised. It's unique to this game, and I like it.

Ugh. How did the nameplate requesting people EVER survive in Morrowind, Oblivion, and/or Skyrim. NO NAMEPLATES ERMAGERD WHAT WILL KILL ME!? Simple, the answer is: whatever's chomping on your face. Now stop complaining and kill it before it kills you.

To add more meat to the bones of this little opinion rant: If you don't know who your enemies are say, in a PvP situation, doesn't that add a fun new dynamic to the game?

"Oh look I'm a friendly! *throws lightning into your face* Teehee, just kidding!"

I mean, think of all the potential subterfuge! And killing that bastage will have real meaning. You'll be thinking about what he was wearing, what he looked like, what sorta spells he cast, instead of looking for the name with the extra numbers and underscores.

In real life I have 0 problems determining people from merchants. In eso they all look alike. THAT is what npc plates are for.

How do you tell people apart from merchants in real life? Are you saying that people who aren't selling you things are somehow different than people you are?

I'm guessing you make this judgement call based on where the merchants in real life are located, e.g. in a shop, near a cash register. You can do the same thing in ESO. If they are standing next to a banner for a shop, they are probably a merchant.

Also, I worked in retail when I was in school and was often approached with questions when I was in the store I worked at but not working (picking up a paycheck, etc.). So obviously not everyone can tell the difference between this new class of people you've created in your mind and "real people" in the real world either.

Attention Zenimax: Stamina builds don't hold up to magicka builds, and this is causing most of your class imbalance. It makes melee weapons and bows weaker than staves and class abilities. It makes medium and heavy armor less desirable than light armor. Fix this imbalance, and you'll address most of your balance issues.

You're comparing an online game in a supposedly social environment with some single player game where everyone was either a random fluff/quest npc or wanted to kill you?

And no, it doesn't add a "fun new dynamic", it compeltely stops the creation of rivalries which is half of what the fun in PvP is about, you have no clue who or what you are fighting, hell, you might as well be fighting npcs. With other npcs next to you of course. (Unless you're on TS together, then you know they're not NPCs \o/)

About "what he was wearing" - How about the same brown robe everyone else is wearing?

I haven't had problems with telling players apart from npcs, but i want to know who i am fighting and which guild they're in, am i fighting an organised group, am i fighting a zerg, is there anyone I will recognise again later, people I know will offer a good fight, guilds I will be able to recognise either on my side or the other side as either skilled or pushovers, and so on.

Really? the only reason I can see for this is that you are botting, speed hacking, or performing some other type of exploit and want to be harder to report you. One of my first thoughts on the no name plate system was that it was going to be an exploiters dream. This makes you sound like an exploiter. I'm not saying you are but that is the impession that you make with this comment.
Really? The only reason someone might want to be anonymous online is to cheat? I'm gonna go ahead and assume you said this just for the joy of making inflammatory statements. I personally voted yes, but I'm strongly in favor of putting the option in for those who feel they need it. However, I'd much prefer that, if it is implemented, it is implemented in just this fashion. I don't care to be pestered with "friend" requests, guild invites, or random mail. I don't need other people to identify me in this game or any other and there is no reason anyone would need to beyond the one person I play with.
If you really can't think of a reason other than cheating, let me offer at least one:
I can't speak for jdkorreck, but I, for one, don't even want to play an MMO, I've never liked them and I don't feel the need to form faux-friendships with people I'll never meet. Hence, I don't really want to have much to do with the MMO crowd, I'd just as soon play anonymously, mind my own business and, as someone else in this thread said I would, leave the game when I'm done with it until they release an expansion or another single-player Elder Scrolls game.
Does that mean players like me don't count? My subscription renews at six-month intervals, so I'm thinking they'll see my money as just as green as any MMO player's...

Thing is though, you can do all of that, or avoid all of that, with nameplates.

A lot of people play MMOs like singleplayer games, which is what you want to do obviously, and that's totally okay.
It's not because people see who you are that they will pester you. Unless of course you decide to become a youtube or stream personality and then it's pretty much a consequence of what you yourself choose, but it doesn't sound like you need to worry about that?

Social interactions in MMOs happen only with people who are receptive there, I've played the same game with nameplates on days where i did get a lot of social interaction and days where i didn't get Anything.
You know what was different on days? My mood. My attitude towards people, how I acted in the game, was i chatty/social/helpful, or was did I not feel like it?
If you want to be the biggest antisocial person on the entire megaserver, there is no nameplate which is going to change that. Except maybe, that people will recognise you from a previous quest they did at the same time, and realsie that you were that person who declined the group invite, or who didn't answer a "Hi, are you doing the same quest?" and they will leave you alone without you having to repeat that experience.

Oh and every game Ive played with nameplates, you can turn them off.

You have hp bar plates here and you can turn them on when full, not just when missing hp. Is that players bar blue? Friendly. Red? Enemy.

Like @Genev‌ said , dont compare this game to skyrim/oblivion/morrowind , played them all , love them all , but it is not the same.

First of all , i dont know about you , but i only play this game in third person , something i would never do in any other TES game.

Also , i know exactly who is what , i just dont know the names , i turned ON ALL the health bars options , so yeah , i know light blue for players and green for NPC , no problems there.

You know , i understand the whole discussion we have about the AH stuff , about public dungeons , even about the vampire/werewolf stuff and so on.

But this whole thing about name plates is just absurd to me.

People are literally here , just to deny an OPTION other players would like in THEIR HUD which does not affect anyone other than the player who turned it ON.

    It is just awesome.

I want to hide behind rocks in PVP... I want to dive around a corner and ambush my attackers! But no, no, most people want the game to tell them where everyone is with Nameplates. Leave them in other MMOs, i like what we have here.

My opinion... add a "HOLD TO TOGGLE" button, kinda like pressing ALT (or whatever) would show all name plates around you, but only while pressing it. For a quick reference. Not for a tactical advantage.

You mostly make a good point, Genev. Probably a nameplate would have little effect on the amount of interaction I'm invited to. But for the record I get some now. I have at least two people on my contacts list now that I couldn't pick out of a lineup. I'm not so rude that I decline the requests when they come (and they do). I even reluctantly joined my boyfriend's guild after much cajoling.
I'm not a total turd. If I see a question in chat that I can answer, I answer, if someone needs to buy resources that I have in spades, I'll sell them. Maybe even give them away depending on the item or the situation, because I'd want someone to do the same for me.
But I do try not to feed my inner megalomaniac by advertising myself with things like facebook, youtube and, yes, nameplates. Again, though, I do wholeheartedly support the option if for no other reason than I can stop hearing the boyfriend whine about it. :-P

I really struggled with not being able to see other players' names in the earlier Elder Scrolls games...

    ...oh wait...

...there were no other players in those games!

Seriously though, I would love name plates. I'm starting to think this is one of the most unsociable MMOs I've played. I'm all for them being optional but I'd like the option to have them at least, along with guilds displaying characters names rather than IDs (ditto for friends list too).

I voted yes but I believe in choice and there should be an option that's bound to a key so when I want to shop, I know what's a merchant and what they sell. Simple addition and everyone's happy!

The only reason I would say no to nameplates is that it makes hiding behind a tree in PvP worth a darn, instead of having your incredibly long name stick out like a sore thumb.

I understand why some people would want them, but I also understand why the developers would restrict it. More than once have I been surprised by an enemy I would have otherwise seen if there were big letters above his head, and I'm completely fine with that.

It's ok, not too crazy about the barebones MMOs. The more OPTIONAL/TOGGABLE features (name plates, chat bubbles, etc), the more interest and the more fun for me, that's just in my opinion though. Hope you can keep enjoying the barebones MMO and that immersion lasts enough for you to stay playing the game.

It is odd that we're able to turn on/off health bars though but not allowed to have nameplates....very odd indeed, in the real world I can't see if somebody is close to dying, I don't see a meter above their head, my immersion is ruined! Oh wait...it's OPTIONAL! Huh, interesting.

Its two to one for no nameplates. Right about what Id expect. It is just a minority complaining.
Yep less then 200 votes totally shows something.....

If that is the case the far larger poll during beta about them shows those that don't want nameplates are in the minority.

Also I've yet to see a good argument for not adding in the option to have nameplates.

Nice loaded poll question you have there, should really help to create an accurate sample :| . I would prefer to have nameplates simply because I like to see who that person is rather than a HP bar.

Nameplates were a toggle option back in some of the betas but for some reason they deemed it necessary to remove them entirely. Not sure how having more choices is a bad thing, but oh well.

I know people that have put more hours into elder scrolls games than some people who chase one mmo after another trying to catch that "unicorn" they got on there very first MMO be it UO, EQ, or WoW.

Being on both sides of the argument (long term ES and MMO) I think its best that they stick to the elder scrolls. I have learned to adapt to the way this game is and I think it has made me a better player. I have enjoyed watching my surroundings instead of a clunky UI and scattered nameplates all over the place.

I don't think I have enjoyed a game (especially an MMO) this much since Everquest. and that has been my unicorn.
