The Elder Scrolls without cloak

I've been playing TESO for a few days now and have crafted many medium armor and stuff and suddenly I realise something is missing... I have not seen any cloaks yet!

To those who say that it's not important to have cloak, well I can say that cloak is integral to the Elder Scrolls series. Even TESO trailer shows the heroes wearing cloak but it's absent in game :(

So what do you think guys, should ZOS add cloak into TESO?

LOL! This game should then titled 'The Incredibles Scroll Online' :)

Pretty much all NPCs in Arena wear cloaks, but players can't iirc. I don't remember having one in Daggerfall or Oblivion, either, and I had to use a mod to have one in Skyrim. I guess cloaks for players is just not Elder Scrolls.

Not going to lie, I would really like a cloak for my nightblade.
But at the same time I'm glad they aren't around. FPS for me is already low (I get tops 20, but I hang around 15. I refuse to lower my graphics any more because I actually want to see texture detail gosh darn it!), and the animations for cloaks/capes would hurt everyone's FPS/ram if they made them look half good. Plus, it's an extra slot for stat boosts and not wearing one puts you at a disadvantage. Of course this can be a nonissue if they give the option to hide it.

I think I recall ZOS stating they're not adding them. I could be wrong so don't quote me! But I'm happy where it is now, but would be happy if they did add them...

Also may I point out that the characters for the add were meant to be cool. The Nord had a broken horn on his helm, and you can't get or make that too. Most companies tend to do this when they're using non ingame graphics/content. Just sayin'!

iv been preaching this since oblivion they should add capes/clocks. And if people really hate it they can make the option to remove it like the helmet. Iv already submitted my /feedback and i urge everyone to do the same so we can have them in the game.

Oh yes and this might be good news considering that there's a possibility for cloak be made as add on... well, I can only hope. Not sure if it can be done without creation tool thingy though.

Daggerfal had the best cloak system of all of them. On top of heavy armor you could wear... 2 cloaks. One heavy, one light, and you could even toggle the hoods. None of the later games, that actually give you a third person view, has felt as satisfying when it comes to cloaks.

Cloaks integral to TES, lol. We haven't been able to wear cloaks since 1996.

I'd like a warm winter cloak for my adventures in the snowy northern regions. I don't care much about fancy capes, I did learn from Edna. ;)

From modding Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim:

Cloaks are actually a pain in the *ss to implement. Think about it. You have a body. Armor can be made to fit or form to that body. It's forgiving because if you're a degree or two off center with your model, the player can't really tell.

Capes are relative to what? In every instantiation of capes I've seen in any game - even Skyrim - there were clipping issues. Clipping is where two models "crash" and one either shows through the other or there's that funky flickering that goes on.

One way around that is to have to capes sweep out behind the player (e.g some Morrowind and early Oblivion mods) and they just look silly. But hair looked silly in Morrowind, too. :)

I would love to see capes and cloaks (hooded versions) both. But it would be interesting to see if they could pull it off and make them look good.

If you know any professional super heroes you would know that cloaks are dangerous. They can cause you to get sucked into jet engines and tangled up at the worst time.

The most amusing thing are khajiit and argonian tails with capes. The tails tended to go through the model, rather than underneath.

And you wouldn't want a nord wearing a khajiiti or argonian-style cape.

Cloak add immersion imho, something is missing say on the guards when I realise that no cloak present in them...

Is it really due to the fact that it's a pain to make them that it's not added?

Maybe they will add it on later, I seem to recall that DDO launched without cloaks and then added them in later.

well I can say that cloak is integral to the Elder Scrolls series.

    I admit, I laughed.

Not one single Elder Scrolls game has cloaks in them for player use.

    Not one.

The only way to get a cloak is by using mods.

So no, cloaks are not integral to the Elder Scrolls series at all. They don't even play a tiny part.

Unless a dev comes online and comments, I doubt that anyone knows "for certain." But I do think they're trying to avoid clipping. This has been a trend - to make armor more "simple" to avoid clipping issues that were paramount in Morrowind. By Skyrim we have one piece of body armor. In a dev video, we were told that decision was made so they could so things with armor that they couldn't do otherwise.

If you look closely at the armor in TESO, you'll see that no matter what style you build, it fits with other styles without clipping (at least I haven't seen any clipping yet). The seams fit together naturally. As a modder, that takes a bit of work. I'm not sure how they could make cloaks/capes work so seamlessly ...

As to the beast races, there could be separate models for beasts, that accommodate their tails ...

why on earth would I do this when I don't want them in game at all. I have played elder scrolls for many years and never recall seeing one cape. and hiding is not an option as it would only hide my cape not everyone's.

oh, and I also recall ZOS saying something about no cloaks.

Hmm.. I think that would make sense as to why the devs decided to forgo cloak implemented into the game. Would be interesting to see the comment made by the devs if they happen to have the mood to respond lol

@Melian‌ Yeah, TES II had sort of a paper doll system and certain items always layered on top. Now that I think about it, the bottom cloak may actually have been a robe, but still with a hood you could put up or down.

    Yep. This.

Elder scrolls has never been big on cloaks. You can get cowls with certain Light Armor motifs, but cloaks are not really a TES thing. I'd like one for my Nightblade too (I already made her a hood), but we'll just have to find other ways to look cool.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

At least the guards have it no? Also, with the available cloak mods(Morrowind and Skyrim) making it blend within the game.

But then, I realise that there are complications exist when cloak is implemented(clipping issue, etc..)

So maybe we may see cloaks implemented in the form of mods(if that's ever allowed)?

You could get a mod for Oblivion that allowed you to get a cloak and it was very well done indeed. Proper flow to it when you moved, no clipping at all, so it obviously can be done and I don't see why Zenimax decided to leave it out of the game.

I think Skyrim had a similar mod as well. So if modders can manage cloaks there is really no excuse for the devs to leave them out of their game.
