Explain resto staff to me

A butter knife is better for soloing than the resto staff.

Resto staff is meant for heals and support not your main dps solo.

I never even equipped one until I hit 15 and could weapon swap.

Thats not true. If you only use class abilities, the resto staff is the clear winner because of its passives. 10% more damage with all spells, 10% mana regen on heavy hits, AND you can use healing spells with it.

Just using the staff you are most likely not using stamina at all forcing all your dps to come from a single pool.

This reduces your total burst as you are forced to recharge using the staff's heavy attack. While someone pulling from both pools simply shifts to stamina while magika regens naturally.

Bowplar's pull from both pools. Granted my experience is all below vet level content but I can drop groups of 3 and 4 without taking a hit and pull the next group almost without stopping.

I also have never had to pop a pot while solo. With my regen and magika pool capped I have no need for the staff.

So I will stand by my original statement. The resto staff is not the best choice for pure dps.

Again the above is all prior to vet content.

I wish, that resto staff can heal allies instead of damage... :'(
This is my main disappointment with healing role in this game.

An restoration staff don't have any offensive abilities and most of its passives increase healing and magic regen making it a bit weaker than a bow or destruction staff with all the passives.

And as Delpwinds say if you are mele with no intersted in bows as secondary, use an restoration staff.

Group healers tend to have healing abilities on their bar and few offensive abilities, this makes them weak in 1v1.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

The resto staff skill line is utter trash outside of the mediocre passives. Both warden and templar have drastically better heals than the staff. The warden can give major resistances for both spell and physical resistance to ALL allies nearby while the resto staff can only give minor. Not to mention with the lotus flower active your basic attacks heal for far more than the resto staff can AND you have the passive that every heal (ie every basic attack) from the warden class grants 10% max HP buff to everyone healed. Heal over time? That is the absolute worst crap this game could have put in for both late game pve and pvp. The ONLY good thing in the resto staff is the damage shield but even that is trash; the only way its good is if you use it on an incredibly low health ally. But youre the healer. You should be HEALING the low health ally. In pvp you want the damage abilities on the destruction staff so you can at least try to survive a fight because sitting in the back trying to solely heal your friend is going to get you jumped on and massacred in .3 seconds. And in pve most bosses do massive damage late game so heal over time is utter worthless and a minor damage shield isnt going to save anyone. As for solo? There is never a time to use a resto staff solo

How does this weapon work for soloing? What is the attack actually doing? is it a viable weapon to specialize in for soloing purposes, or for two-man levelling/questing?

I'm considering trying out the nightblade healer everyone's raving about, kind of a shadow priest using siphoning and resto staff attacks, I just have never used a resto staff and i'm a bit confused as to how it really works.

Would a destruction staff be better for soloing?

The resto staff attacks, both light and heavy, deal damage, but not as much as a destruction staff does. The resto staff heavy attacks also restore more magica than the destro staffs, so can provide good resources return. And of course a resto staff open up the resto staff skill line for you to access.

I have a nightblade healer and it is effective and fun, I use it as an "off healer" or hybrid, that also deals reasonable damage. There are not many of the nightblade skills utilised, but some of the passives and a few of the skills are very strong, particularly the ultimate morphs which for healing are extremely good. Combine these skills with the resto staff, and support and undaunted line healer skills (purge and orbs) and you have an effective healer that can also shift to damage for solo play etc, with a fantastic execute skill that morphs to range.

I am interested... when and where did folk start raving about a nightblade healer? Mostly when I mention mine or bring it to a dungeon/trial etc, folk are like, WTF is that! Ive had him for ages so if folk are now coming round to the idea that is interesting.

I know this thread is from 2014 but holy cow is there so much wrong in this post.

The restos heals are arguably better then any templar or warden heals. Really the only weak skill is force syphon, though even that has uses, syphon spirit is one of only 3, soon to be 4, way of getting minor magic steal. That is worth something, even if eledrain is better.

It is has the only access to AOE minor berzerk, on combat prayer, that alone is amazing but the same ski gives the minor armor buffs and has a rather large heal attached to it as well, large enough to not need another burst heal on your bar, if you know how to aim at all.
