Shoes..

Mucking about in the Clothing station, after all these years playing I realised something.. no-one in Tamriel wears shoes, at least our characters don't. There are whole selections of boots, hundreds of them, sandals (a few), and even caligata (imperials, obviously, some Khajiit examples.. Wood Elves too).. but no actual shoes, simple, ankle height leather socks you put on your feet..

I don't have every armour style unlocked, but even previewing the ones I don't have yet, no shoes. I'm on a quest now, to find the lost shoes of Tamriel.. does such a thing exist?

But actual shoes, as a clothing style.. doesn't seem to exist. I wonder why, what's the conspiracy? Maybe I should tag one of the devs? The quest continues ;)

(just to be clear, I'm only half serious, though I do actually wonder why real shoe type clothing was omitted, Boots, hundreds of them in countless styles, sandals and caligata.. shoes? nowhere to be seen)

Noone wears heels on those boots either, in spite of them being necessary for horse riding and a staple in footwear for men and women for centuries.

I would also like to see more shoe styles. Everything is boots (or the occasional sandal/open toed slipper) and itd be nice to get some variety.

Id also like to see less open toed sandals connected by the thinnest piece of metal on the top. You really expect me to believe those two pieces are not going to come apart with all the running, jumping, and fighting our characters do? If they had a backing for the heel, then itd be fine, but I would just love to see less of these types of "shoe" in general.

While I agree that the lack of heels is odd considering all the other clothing technologies that exist in Tamriel, they are absolutely NOT necessary for horse riding. Horse riding has been around for thousands of years. Heels are barely even a thousand years old and even then, wide-spread adoption wasn't until centuries later. Most of Europe didn't have them throughout the medieval era.

Yeah, for all of the inventiveness for clothing pieces in the chest and legs category, all shoes except sandals look like texture swaps. It's one of the weakest parts of the entire outfit system. Not sure how that's come about, and I'd be interested to know how it came about, too. It's very boring. I can't think of an example of footwear we have available that isn't a boot that stops just below the knee. Why can't they even stop just *above* the knee? And then they always have some silly bit of metal on the knee itself, and perhaps a matching little bit on the toe. There you go. That's your boot, whatever outfit style you're wearing. The shape is always very samey, too -- notice how 90% of our footwear has a round toe. I wanted a pointed toe for one of my mages, and they're astonishingly hard to come by. Of course there's no curled toe. (I haven't seen the Mad God's Dancing Shoes. I suspect they might.) If they could do a different design for the Mad God's shoes, seems like they could do more varied designs in general.
      I care what you think.

I wonder if it’s the same reason why, when you hide feet in the outfit station, that the legs aren’t bare. I was so disappointed when I did that on my character and she had what looked like bandages wrapped around her legs. I guess they want the feet to cover that up.

It's just a quirk of the clothing system, like how there are no cloaks or capes, or how most times a robe or coat is split between chest and legs instead of being just chest

Which is weird because SWTOR I remember having both shoes AND coats that are chest slot, the capes are uhhhh... Well if you ever played SWTOR you know how it is.

We can't have higher boots outside of costumes due to how motifs are partitioned. If you'll notice, footwear either replaces the foot or the lower leg below the knee. This is so disparate motifs can be used together without clipping--the top of the boot replaces the entire lower leg model. Presumably, all models for armor legs lack any kind of partitioning for replacing the leg model above the knee.

All armor leg models then need to taper so that the lower leg portion can be replaced with any boot model.

As for the design elements, all motifs are ostensibly armor; it's practical to wear boots over shoes when exploring (since the higher top prevents things from getting in the top) and to wrap the bottom of your pants inside your boots (to prevent chafing your shins or calves; I presume that these wrappings are meant to suggest foot wrappings or socks inside the footwear).

Design-wise, boots fit the fantasy aesthetic more than shoes, which read as more "modern." Oddly, the series usually has pants that are gathered at the lower leg, even when worn with shoes--the only real exceptions that come to my mind are Burgundy Linens and Light Brown Linens in Oblivion. Loose pants over shoes is visually reminiscent of jeans and sneakers, which is probably why they don't design motifs that way.

And before anyone tries to show me authentic medieval or historical examples of such fashion--it is not, nor has it ever been, about "historical accuracy." That would be nonsensical for a made-up setting. It is entirely about matching the perceived aesthetic, the "vibe," of pseudo-medieval fantasy.

With stirrups, riders wore boots with heels. Tenth century Persians had them, as did the Mongols. You can ride a horse without stirrups but if you want to fight on horseback, you'll want stirrups, and the fine shoes originating from Persian or Mongolian cobblers.

In ESO, you have the Prisoner trousers, some of the Dark Elf pants, and some of the Orc pants. So they actually did a few motifs like that when the game came out, they just haven't ever since.

That would be nonsensical for a made-up setting. It is entirely about matching the perceived aesthetic, the "vibe," of pseudo-medieval fantasy.

It's not because the setting is made up - you get tons of this stuff in supposedly historical settings as well. People's feelings are more important than accuracy (not to mention creativity and variety), and over time, a certain visual identity is ingrained into people's brains that have little to do with what'd actually be possible.
In fact, in a made-up setting, there'd be more space for possible variety like this. Like ESO isn't even consistently pseudo-medieval. And Dark Elf pants don't actually look out of place or un-fantasy-like. They don't particularly look like armour (the prisoner rags even more so), but that's not the same.

For some reason, their design bible has consistently kept a few baffling decisions alive - the kneecaps mentioned earlier, the no-shoes-policy, the massive hip plates, and a few others. The overall visual design has changed quite a lot since the beginning, but for some reason, these have survived.

I'm not sure why we are going for pseudo medieval. The dresses the npc usually wear or that are frequently in the crown store are very Hollywood versions of American rural 1800s ish or 1800s ish French barmaids. The weapons are medieval but the clothing is not.
Tbh I wish they'd sort the dresses out.

Yup. I got very familiar with them when trying make a barefoot pirate look (Which I now can be and don't have to use Prisoner's Sandals). Y'ffre's Will and Stags of Z'en both medium legs are both shorter. The Stags ones are even knee length.
