I've been through a lot in the game, but I don't know if it's worth having companion?

Yes, they help. But they take a lot of time and are expensive. Level 1 - 20 can be completed in a week . But a reputation is a long time.

If you like chasing a world boss around trying to get a hit in then yeah totally worth it. You have a companion that boss will agro on it and the chase is on.
For me they are mostly irritating for overland stuff but can come in handy for arenas and the archives. Level one up and if you don't want it tagging along stick it in a house somewhere.

Have to disagree with the above of chasing bosses.... a tank build companion is awesome! Tanks anything from world bosses to crazy IA bosses. Healing companions also have their worth, but it is better to selfheal. DPS companions die too fast and drag the bosses behind them(as noted above).

But tank companions are 100% worth having!

I find them to be mostly useless, even when their passives are unlocked the rewards are generally worthelss.

Even in full epic HEAVY armor, with their first skil being an armor buff, second being a heal, they still stand in red circles and die, often getting 1 shot. I generally spend more time healing them to keep them alive than DPSing, running me out of resources and doing little to down the boss. In overland content, I find that Oakensoul and a heavy armor lighting staff heavy attack build is more reliable than relying on companions.

They are nothing like a hunters pet in WoW.

IMO, Zenithar for the Heavy Sack passive, Sharp as Night for the fishing passive, Tanilorn (or whatever her name is) is good for her lock picking passive are the best ones for passive abilities. Azandar and Isobel give extra loot, but I have never seen anything worthy of mention, I generally find their bags clutter my bags. The gold made is meh.

If you are going to level them up, do their dailies first until you get to 4k rep. They get an XP bonus the higher the rep is, this makes grinding out their level to 20 easier. I mean you can use them all the time to do stuff, but when it comes to actually grinding their XP, its best to be in all training gear, with a good XP scroll on and them at 4000 or more rep.

A melee tank maybe. I've seen far too many world bosses reset because someone's companion taunts it from range then (presumably because they're programmed to stay at range) runs away from the boss, goes too far instead of kiting and circling around and drags the boss out their area.

Of course the same can happen with players, but at least they usually get the idea after it happens once and will try not to do it again (ideally avoiding using taunt skills if they're afraid of the boss targeting them), but companions will keep doing the same thing over and over until their owner changes their build.

The companions doing a tumbling run across the zone is why I would like to be able to toggle the companions to stay within 12 meters of the character. Let them roll around dodging stuff all they want just do it close by.

Absolutely true. Azandar and Zerith are exceptionally good tanks. Not as good as a person, as they don’t do mechanics but they do not die quick. I use both of them for WB and infinite archive frequently.

One nice thing with companions is that if you go afk and an mob spawns on you they will save you.
Grinding just make you go in circles.

Totally agree. My squishy stamblade main can do a lot more content with Bastian as tank just because he can hold aggro. I don’t even have purple gear for him. He survived a world boss in Solstice yesterday when I got killed.

I have Bastian on any character I want to solo stuff on, he uses sword and board(so no resetting). he holds aggro really well and I've given him a mix of bolstered/vigorous and the quickened gold ring I think we all got. Sure I throw him the odd heal but not that many. I probably could solo the stuff completely but he makes it a LOT easier! :)

Honestly found the opposite, but it pays to know what each companion likes for most effective levelling. Azandar is super-enthusiastic about enchanting, for example, so the upcoming event would be a good time to work on that.

Azander also likes when you loot certain things, so if have him out when you loot urns (Necrom!), his rapport goes up crazy fast. I was leveling legerdemain, and I think I leveled his rapport fully in a few days between necrom urns and enchanting daily writs, without doing any of his quests.

They're pretty good tanks with single bosses with a pretty large arena, or an arena they can't roll-dodge out of. But in a fight with a numbers of adds, or multiple bosses, they really struggle and/or aren't a lot of help.

From a combat perspective, eh. They're fine.

I think their stories are cool and interesting though. I wish we had even more story with them! My thing is their utility. The system itself hasn't been updated since release (eg, meaning outside of simply adding more companions, think updates like capabilities, positioning, gear changes).

They're cool little buddies. I usually use them til they max out and I get the achievements and then stow them away forever.

Depends on your playstyle as well as gear and skill level.
Personally, I never use any of them.

For most companions (all but the first two, Bastian and Mirri), favor can be maxed in a week by doing only their favorite dailies and their personal quests.

You start at 750 rapport and need to reach 4000. After that you continue to gain rapport up to 5500, but it has no effect on gameplay.

    Start at 750 rapport

    -Day 1: two +125 rapport gains (1000) —> first personal quest for +500 (1500)

    -Day 2: two +125 rapport gains (1750)
    -Day 3: two +125 rapport gains (2000) —> second personal quest for +500 (2500)

    -Day 4: two +125 rapport gains (2750)
    -Day 5: two +125 rapport gains (3000) —> third personal quest for +500 (3500)

-Day 6 and 7: two +125 rapport gains each day to get to 4000 (max rapport level)

The original two companions, Bastian and Mirri, have only two personal quests, which means they would take longer than later companions if following that schedule. (Bastian also has only one favorite +125 rapport daily.) But Bastian’s MG dailies and Mirri’s Fighter Guild dailies can still be spammed multiple times per day for rapport gains — this was changed for later companions so they do not continue to get the +125 rapport for their dailies beyond the first of each type in a day, but it was not applied retroactively.

That means Bastian and Mirri can be maxed in two days:

There are 15 total MG and FG dailies that can be done on the same character each day, although the game only supplies you with one of each - you can get the rest through shares from other players. To break up the monotony of the dailies, you can do their two personal quests when available for 1k rapport total. That means only 2250 points’ worth of favor is required from the MG/FG dailies, which takes 18 quests to reach. Without their personal quests, it would take 26 dailies, which is still doable in two days.

While Ember’s dailies cannot be spammed for multiple rapport increases, she can go a little faster than the schedule above because she has three favorite dailies. One of these requires an unrelated DLC (Thieves Guild), so she can go by the schedule above if you don’t have that DLC or dislike that daily.

I find Zerith a great tank when I’m solo or even in 4 person dungeons on normal.
