Subclassing question from a console player.

Hey good morning everyone! Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend. My guild was chatting last night in discord. We were talking about builds and subclassing. Everyone seems to have a different idea of how it's gonna work. So I want to ask the folks that are already playing.

Do I need to have the class I want to take a skill line from to 50? Example. My Arcanist wants to take assassination. Do I need to have a nightblade to 50? Does assassination need to already be leveled to 50 on said NB to be able to take it and put it on my Arc? I know once I take it, it'll take longer to level and cost double but the first part I'm hazy on. Thanks.

im pretty sure you just need one character to 50 to access the system.

You just need to do the intro quest/speak to npc for the character(50th level!) that wants to explore subclassing. After that you swap out a maximum of two skill lines for existing skill lines in that character's class, with a maximum of one skill-line from any other class. Skills and passives cost 2-skill points per skill/passive, so subclassed abilities may require some skill point grinding.

Levelling is the real grind, though: you need twice the xp to level the subclassed skill lines and skills but, once done, those skill-lines are available maxed for any subsequent subclassing character using them as subclassed skill-lines. Might be worthwhile to go the 150xp scroll and master writs for this where possible; not sure when the next x2 xp event is but one of those would certainly help.

No you don't need to already level it to 50.

My templar is using assassination and my highest level nightblade is around level 30 and hasn't maxed out any of the skill lines yet. I also had the option of choosing arcanist skills and I've never even made an arcanist. (I should, I've been planning one for ages, but haven't gotten around to it yet.)

I leveled to 50 all my class lines on each class during jubilee because I understood it was needed to be able to access them with subclassing... If so, it was just a waste of time then...
Lots of confusion and conflicting informations around the system.

Yeah, I felt the same. Everyone thinks something different so it's good to get info from players who've already done it.

Well, in the bad feeling there's relief - it is way better if it works as described in this thread. It would have felt way worse if it really worked as I previously understood it. I'm happy for all the new players who don't need to level a character of each class

Leveling all other classes to 50 gets you achievements AND some cool new titles.
