Battlegrounds (BG): Most players seem to be playing "battle royale" regardless of the BG type

Been playing Battlegrounds (BG) for first time in quite some time, both under and over level 50, all 8 v 8.

For non-Deathmatch BGs (Capture the Flag; Domination; Chaos Ball; Crazy Kings), I've noticed that only a couple of players per BG are actually playing the BG game. Most players are just running around killing the enemy players (i.e., playing Battle Royale). If that's what's fun for most players, maybe all BGs should be Deathmatch? Or maybe we should back to the old method where we could queue for the type of BG we wanted?

Seriously, most players aren't going for the Chaos Balls or trying to flip flags, they just wanna kill. I just play the BG to get maximum points for the team (carrying the ball, flipping flags, running relics). I seem to be unusual in this regard. I keep getting the high score for my team, even though I am quite bad at BG and PvP. I just get high score because I am one of the few who is actually playing the specific BG game. Maybe have a new BG! A real "Battle Royale"! 16 players but not grouped into teams. All killing independently. Killing anyone and everyone.

It's because players cannot choose the modes they queue in for.

A new mode wouldn't be advisable as the bg population appears to be very low. It's not really Battle Royale they're playing, it's just deathmatching. And can you imagine the builds Battle Royale would attract?

I try to play each mode as intended, but I get frustrated because holding the chaosball isn't very entertaining and ctf is so poorly implemented.

Public servers will never be perfect. There will always be players that queue into a game mode they don't intend to play if they think they can get more kills. This happens in every game. But giving players a choice would improve buy-in.

That is true in virtually any PvP match that isn’t played by coordinated people. Most players who queue for random BGs despise PvP, have no idea how to play in any PvP game mode, and generally do not want to be there. They’re only there because they want one or more of the rewards that come from BGs or they’re just doing the daily.

Or they play at times when friends and guild mates are not available.

Look, when I started doing battlegrounds some years ago you were allowed to pick Deathmatch as the Battleground you wanted to enter.

    Simple. Everybody liked it.

Then, we were tossed out of paradise and into the turmoil of random battlegrounds only.

I really have nothing else to say about this matter.

If the objectives were fun and interesting and setup to promote pvp than less people would just death match, but as on rn most of the game modes are actually won by AVOIDING pvp hence people just death match and ignore the lame mechanics

When you play with random people, it's a roll of the dice who you get grouped up with. None of us has control of that, although sometimes it seems like the other teams queued up together, and your team may consist of any level of very experienced, to very inexperienced players, and not everyone on either team will be able to coordinate with each other. That's just how the system works.

If you want to guarantee playing with people you can be sure of their abilities, join the BGs as a group and not solo.

I would like to see an actual Battle Royale mode added to ESO at some point. Maybe it could be framed as one of Hircine's Great Hunts, like the plotline of the March of Sacrifices dungeon, where only one team of hunters can claim Tarcyr's heart and leave — essentially like an extraction PvP game, similar to the game Dark and Darker.

I’ve been in Domination matches where everyone was just grouped up and fighting in the center, so I started flipping the flags myself. Then others followed suit. Maybe they just weren’t sure what to do and looking for some guidance, I don’t know. It happened quite a few times during the last BG weekend.

Well once one person starts the flags you kinda put a timer on the match so then everyone is forced to counter flip in order to stop you from winning in 5 min thus forcing the battle royal to end

I am not a competitive PvPer, I try to stay on casual 8v8, but I think some players could have a playstyle similar to mine: I like to support and "suppress" - I leave the flag (objective) to more skilled players and I tend to focus on snaring, immobilizing, stunning, knocking, pulling, pushing away enemy players.
Maybe I'm wrong but I don't even typically aim at giving killing blows but more at reducing everyone's health at minimum, so that my team finish them or they run away.
My score is never much high but I feel like I have contributed silently and I have fun this way.

My point is, when I started playing BGs I didn’t really know where to go and what to do so I just let someone else lead. Now that I am more experienced with the various modes I feel free to step up and do it myself. Perhaps others feel the same way, especially new players.

This is due to no separate "Deathmatch" mode to que for. ZOS seems to think adding Deathmatch to all modes no matter what, meaning no "No Deathmatch" que along with "Deathmatch" que. This causes the majority of players to not do BG at all. All ZOS looks at is the data from BG, forgetting the biggest reason players are NOT playing BG at all.

Because those people don't understand that they can get kills on objectives; for some reason, the fact that objectives are the very points of contest by nature doesn't sit right with them, so they decide to strike out on their own and die away from heals.
