Do you think that the new subclassing system should be renamed to multi-classing?

The name that they've utilized for this system has many people confused IMO as to what we should be expecting. When we hear subclassing, many think that DKs are getting a new class skill line - they are going for specializations WITHIN a class, not necessarily adopting an entire, unchanged skill line from a different class. I think a name change would be smart to properly inform people on what's coming. They did this with Infinite Archive, albeit for different reasoning, but it can definitely be done.

It's probably too late at this point. News articles wrote about the term "subclassing", the voice actor for the Subclassing quest has already recorded the lines, and there's no doubt tons of references to the string "subclass" or "subclassing" in the game files.

It'd take the threat of legal action to change the name now, like the case with the Endless Archive being renamed to the Infinite Archive.

At this point it would just be needlessly confusing. We're stuck with it.

How about we call it sub-Multiclassing and leave it there?

@CooperHarley Are you coming back to ESO for Multiclassing? I probably will so I can do Hard modes as a final swansong!

No, but I’m only saying that because we can’t use the class mastery script of the subclasses making them subordinate to the main class.

I'm okay with "subclass." TES has used the term "subclass" from the very beginning (in Arena), and has never used the term "multiclass" as far as I know. I understand why some people think "multiclassing" is more accurate in this case, but I'm not sure it really matters enough to change it at this point.

Dont see the point in renaming - of all the things that need changing the name doesn't really matter

No, it should be renamed 'Dog's Dinner'.

No because multiclassing implies you have one character with access to a full other class, but that's not correct since you only get a single tree from another class.

Therefore, subclassing is the correct way to describe it.

the side of me who had latin for 4 years cringes every time "sub" is mentioned in the context of the upcoming changes.

sub means "beneath/under" and not across - so if they already used it like that in Arena it was wrong then too. Historically Latin beats that I´d say :-).

the Latin prefix "sub-" generally means "under," "below," or "beneath". It's often used to indicate a position beneath something, a lesser status, or a subordinate relationship

This is absolutely multiclassing and there are only two aspects left of your main class that aren‘t even that relevant. Those are class mastery scripts and class sets. Besides that it‘s just one of three skill lines, if you decide to multiclass the maximum of other classes‘ skill trees.

The original class of a character is still mechanically relevant, so yes subclassing is the correct term.

    It should be definitely renamed.

Ideally it should never be added to at the very least drastically limited. Otherwise it will break the game on a fundamental level.

The thing is that class skills in ESO were never designed to be used in combo with other class skills sourced from other class. That is why they are for the most part so powerful. Seriously, did you not noticed that ? Class skills for the most part are way more powerful than weapon / world / guild / scribing etc. Cuz that was the design philosophy. You pick a class that has some cool thing but lacks in other department, so if you lack something in your toolkit - you supplement that gap with non-class skills (that are weaker than class skills).

If every class will have access to same class skills, it will cause basically every end-game build to look the same and work the same. There won't be any diversity and different class mechanic. We will just have 1 class (1 for each type of content) that will play the same. It will also make grinding 3x times longer as you will also need to level up 2 additional classes (and every new class every once in a while). On top of that - there is a huge risk of class skills becoming way weaker - down to the level of current non-class skills since you will no longer need other non-class skills. So a nerf to force meta-change will actually start to hurt way more players than now. Oh, and "clean" classes will most likely be punished the most. They will be in the worst spot imho.

I hope so one day. Basically, I've never understood why putting a class system in an Elder Scrolls game is ridiculous.
Bethesda is taking the right path with subclasses, in my opinion, even if it misses the point of removing classes.

It is multiclassing for sure, looking forward to it too. If it plays like a multiclassing system, don't care what the name is. If it sucks, enough people will leave and they'll fix it. Seriously doubt they would want to give up on the idea of a multiclassing system, this game needs the change big time.

It's ZOS's different definition of a subclass. You will only find this version in ESO. A true Subclass would be something like a Templar subclassing into a Paladin. He would have different skills that would be based on damage and healing at the same time. And he would be focused on heavy armor and sword, and board use. That would be a true subclass. What we are getting is just more grind and confusion. The only players I see really using this are the meta group content players or PVP players being forced to use it. If you don't do any of that, then it's useless to you.

Except that it 100% fits the term. A subclass would be a templar that could specialize into a monk or or priest after mastering being a templar - something that a DK couldn't do by virtue of not being a templar. As the system current stands on PTS we have a "class" that can rob skill lines from other classes effectively making you a multi-class.

It doesn't really matter, but it is a little jarring when I hear it and have to remind myself that it's actually multiclassing.
