ESO has stopped working

TrypleZed
TrypleZed
So I launch the Elder Scrolls Online launcher, and along the bottom it shows a full bar and 100%. I click PLAY and immediately windows pops up with the following:

ESO has stopped working

Windows can check online for a solution to the problem... etc

I tried repairing and received the same error. I previously had been playing fine, until the game patched just a few minutes ago.

Same issue im trying to reinstall the game now.

I've had that issue on my laptop since the third beta session I played. Had no problems the first two, then it all of a sudden would do that and is still doing that. The "fix" I was told was to change, in the eso.exe properties, the compatability to Windows XP, and to set it to always run as administrator. Neither of those worked for me, and I haven't been able to get back through to customer service.

Just tried compatibility mode and as administrator after reading your comment. Neither of those helped me either.

Though this is mean of me, I'm kind of glad more people are having this problem now. Maybe a fix will come faster.

I'm selfishly hoping that this is happening to enough people so that it becomes a priority to fix, but it seems like there are multiple issues going on at the moment.

Dang, you beat me to saying it Midgardian.

i'v had that problem since 5min. after 5 day early access started. they have escalated my ticket 4 times and said they would get back to me every time, 5 days and still waiting. though some of the ZoS peeps have kept in touch with me the actual techs. are letting me down bad.

Run as admin, you can try disabling your antivirus, firewall, Pop-up blocker, Ad-blocker or webfilter temporarily and try again.

    Try repair client.

During beta, they tried to help me but it didn't work. Since I have another computer, I just started playing on that one. However, now the game, though playable, constantly crashes on that computer (and I'd rather play on my laptop), so I submitted another ticket.

They emailed me very quickly, with information that wasn't helpful: they sent me "Hi! Here are the minimum specs for the game..." essentially. Both my computers meet the minimum specs, so I emailed them back, and haven't heard from then in 4 days.

I've tried all of that. Plus, the game DID work for me (and many others) initially, but suddenly stopped working. And I know that I didn't change any firewall stuff or anything between when it worked and didn't work, so it seems to be probably something on the game's end.

Running as admin, repairin and so on. In early access phase game worked fine.

Apparently the latest patch has caused webroot to effect the Launcher.

I agree. The game worked for me as recently as this morning (9am EST). When I launched the client this afternoon, it downloaded a small patch, and then suddenly I was receiving the errors.

Pop-up blockers should have no effect on the game client as those are browser based. I have tried repairing to no avail.

This isn't about the Launcher not working. My launcher is fine, and the game is shown to be 100% downloaded (see the screen shot). The problem occurs when I click PLAY.

I did try your suggestion to launch ESO by clicking running "eso.exe" but that still results in the same error.

EDIT: By Launcher I am referring to the Application that installs and then allows you to click the Play button.

In my case it was Webroot SecureAnywhere. Disabling it solved problem.
  • alittletooobvious
I use webroot secure anywhere as my antivirus software and that is what was causing me problems. I had played just fine with it running since the beta, but after this recent patch I had to shut webroot off to be able to load and play the game.

EDIT: I just noticed that Zilyana also said this earlier.

I will look into this. I'd rather not have to disable antivirus software in order to play a game. Hopefully there are internal settings I can manage.

The launcher is bugged, try to start the game from your game file directory.

    1. Programm Files
    2. Zenimax Online
    3. Elder Scrolls Online
    4. Data
    5. Client
    6. ESO.EXE

    Edit:

I saw it was already suggested, sorry for repeating it ;)

Thanks for the help everyone. At least now I know the problem, though I really don't like the idea of ESO requiring me to disable my antivirus software.

By "disabling" what do you mean? Mine has the firewall and shields all set to "off."

Not the issue involved, but thanks for the help. I realize most people are having this problem and not the one I had.

Sadly I have confirmed that Webroot SecureAnywhere seems to be the "root" of the problem, as ESO plays when I disable it.

I must've scrolled too fast because you were the only one I seen suggested this. I did this step and it worked the first try. So I am guessing the launcher issue is my problem. Been unable to play since beta but after trying this I'll just put a shortcut to my desktop. Thanks for this info! Hopefully they'll fix this launcher issue. Also I do not have webroot installed and had turned off firewall which didn't work either. I believe for some it's just a faulty launcher not working right.
