Thanks for the tips everyone! I'm gonna try and learn to play ToT one day, the rewards for winning are a very good hook.

I wish I had Red Eagle, but you need to do the ToT questline to get it, and I haven't even gotten far enough to unlock the first quest in it...

I am not sure if the NPC would select a deck you don't own yet or not. If not, you are looking at four decks that will have to be selected. Its best to go for the best cards that are the cheapest with alot of power or gold attached.

NPCs can select decks you dont own, if its proficient or expert level npc

novice NPC only selects from the 4 starter decks, with no card upgrades
proficient can select any available deck with no card upgrades

Yeah, that is how I know what the last three decks do (the most recent Saint, Mora and Almalexia ones), though now that I have access to Necrom, maybe I should start working on those two decks. Not sure where the saint one comes from.

I did the ToT tutorial a few months ago and then forgot about it, so when I got Zerith and went to try again, I had completely forgotten how the game works and it was a massacre.

So I did the tutorial on my char that's actually in charge of leveling companions and after a couple of games, I have a pretty decent handle on the basics now. I'm even doing all three of the daily matches for the better reward.

As for the Defense Quests, I would suggest just doing it on one character. You don't need max rapport on every character that uses a companion, only on the one that's leveling them.

I picked one of my chars for that, and why other characters help with doing dailies to level the guild lines, actually leveling the companion (and getting max rapport) are the job of one character only, since rapport is per character.

Thanks, I thought that might be where it came from (and thanks for the name, I just couldn't remember it), but I just wasn't sure.

I was trying to get Zerith favor, nothing more, otherwise I do not know ToT any more than the initial release, and it has become much more challenging since then. It appears I have 6 of 8 decks, which is not useful for my level, at least to get the Zerith Favor achievement.

I paid attention to this post, and actually tried to win each time. The reason I finally won, IMHO, is because it was the turn where I went first. Every other time the opponent went first, and I lost, generally by 5 yo 8 points, not to bad, so I continued to play and learn.

When I finally won, it was 40 to 38, because I started first.

I must say, even though I have no interest in ToT, every game I plaid was rather fun, and if it was not for the competition and ranking, I would enjoy it more. For that to happen, the novice players need to be squishier, to enable learning.

I was thinking about picking up Zerith for my non-ESO+ account. I'd forgotten about the 1 match needed for total achievement. So: when ESO+ is free once a year, can you play ToT during that time?
I would be fine with leveling his rapport by only using the Elsweyr Defense Force quests, if I can finish off the achievement during the Free ESO+ week(end?).

(Worth it for Heavy Sack Keen Eye, for me!)

Yes, these are my go-to decks. The NPC is very easy to beat with them. Even with RNG in their favor, it mostly works out.
