I want to use NPC Companions. Which early game Companions are available?

Firstly, this Companions system is a new thing? As in, it only became a part of this game in 2021 in the Blackwood expansion?

And anyway... There are Companions available for early game content right? I actually just wanna play solo as a tank. Will this Companion of mine be enough to clear dungeons for the sake of gaining Undaunted experience?

Thanks.

Bastian and Mirri came with Blackwood
Isobel and Ember came with High Isle
Azandar and Sharp-as-Night came with Necrom (??)

If you have those expansions, you can get them at any time. There is no level requirement.

A companion is not going to do as much damage as a player, but you can always try. But with a pure tank build without having someone to DPS for you, it might take a while. You can start with Fungal Grotto I and see how you feel about it.

2 players with 2 companions can definitely clear dungeons, though.

You have to at this point buy the appropriate DLC in order to access companions - so that's Blackwood for Bastian and Mirri; High Isle for Isobel and Ember; and Necrom for Sharp and Azandar. The next two companions will be available in Update 44. IIRC, they will be available in the base game - here's a link to read about how to access them as there's a couple of "kinks" involved:

Update 44 is later this month for PC, early next month for XBox and PS.

I would start with Mirri, to be honest. Just make sure not to grab too many torchbugs.

If the Companion's skills are important to you (such as if you want them to match or differ from your character's skills) then keep this in mind:
    • Nightblade — Mirri Elendis
    • Dragonknight — Bastian Hallix, Tanlorin
    • Templar — Isobel Veloise
    • Sorcerer — Ember
    • Warden — Sharp-as-Night
    • Necromancer — Zerith-var
    • Arcanist — Azandar al-Cybiades

If their race/gender is more important to you, then consider this:
    • Dunmer/Dark Elf — Mirri Elendis (F)
    • Imperial — Bastian Hallix (M)
    • Breton — Isobel Veloise (F)
    • Khajiit — Ember (F), Zerith-var (M)
    • Argonian — Sharp-as-Night (M)
    • Redguard — Azandar al-Cybiades (M)
    • Altmer/High Elf — Tanlorin (NB)
