in my humble understanding the cooldown timer is intentional to allow other players to overtake the chest if you fail lockpicking
when i just started playing and was utterly bad in this minigame i often lost the chest to others
now i got significantly better, though other players noticing someone lockpicking a chest still stand near and spam the Action button.
    - if you fail they overtake
    - if you succeeded and have no autoloot enabled, they get the loot
    - if you run out of bag space, they get the loot you could not grab
    - if you have treasure map duplicate in your inventory, they get the map
So this minigame is not about manners, but about contention, i guess this was the developers idea to implement this timer.

I hate being pressured to pick it when someone else is hovering nearby. Not that I mess up often.

If I see someone working on a chest I just keep going. Plenty of other chests to open.

The timer is just fine, the rewards are not.

Advanced and Master chest rewards are unsurprising and are trash way more often than not, which isn't right.

I almost always eventually get dungeon drops I'm after from Simple or Intermediate chests which is skewed and not right either.

the timer and cooldown is there for fairness. keeps one player from hogging all the chests. take your turn and move or just simply level thief skill line

most ppl hunting chests are farming an item. drop chances require u to open as many chests as possible. so most will wait just because that chest might just be THE chest lol

I very rarely see people waiting. Most of the time, I see them run past the chest. Chests aren't exactly overflowing with riches, so unless the person is looking for something specific, they are sort of a waste of time.

I actually haven't had "chest loomers" in quite a while. With a baby account though, all my girls on all accounts are picking whatever chests they run across to send anything useful to the newest account for binding or deconning.
