Question about Repairing

Every time I repair, my computer downloads 10gb+ of files. My question is, is that because I'm missing these files? Or does the repair just automatically re-download everything again? Last time I did it, it was going for 12 hours downloading god knows what and I ended up cancelling the repair as it literally went all day and couldn't play.
Could someone please explain what happens during the repair a bit better for me? And are the issues I'm having (no sound) due to the fact I may be missing a whole load 10gb+ of files?
