At least some of that work was finished and for all we know there could be something new that was added to it on the backend very recently that is causing these very issues. In fact I assure that's the case because projects like this are *always* rewriting small parts of the backend. Anyway, they've pushed updates in the past with bits and pieces of that larger project and even acknowledge that it was causing issues and ended up rolling parts of it back.

Personally, I'd just to know what's the scope & status of the project. It's a bit frustrating to see such frequent and getting no explanation as to why. @ZOS_Kevin

The issue we experienced yesterday appeared to be a networking issue as there were no problems on the servers themselves when players could reach them. If I had to guess it was a problem in their NA data center, but that's pure speculation.

Outside of the particular issue this post is about, I understand there have been complaints about lag recently, but not everyone has experienced it.

My overland, dungeon and trial experiences have all performed as well as ever with absolutely no lag issues this update. Others have reported the same. Outside of isolated incidents like yesterday, the performance I've experienced with those activities since returning to the game several months ago has been very good.

Cyrodiil has always had performance issues and they may be different day to day, week to week, month to month based entirely on how the players on the server play as load will vary based on play styles. Ball groups and highly skilled players will load the servers much more than dudes heavy attacking from walls and barely moving, so the distribution of play styles is as important as the total population.

We don't have the information to reach any conclusions from our chairs. It's an incredible reach to imagine anything specific like code rewrites being responsible. Speculation is pointless and will just result in misinformation as others without technical knowledge read it here and pass it on as fact. That's why there are so many myths circulating in the community.

Second day in a row with huge lag spikes, yesterday seemed to be fixed quick only to return today… my guess… probably someone salty and attacking ZOS via ddos. Pure guess on my part though, they’ve already said they are looking into it.

Thanks all, just confirming we've seen your reports today and are looking into things.

    @ZOS_GinaBruno Any update please?

It seems pretty clear that both yesterday and today there have been some people that have had performance issues on either PC NA and/or PC EU, and others who have had no such issues. I'm sure it would help enormously if you were to confirm exactly what was resolved yesterday and how, as well as what is being investigated and in due course resolved today. Is it e.g. the servers, backend, network, or at players' end? We only ever get told "we're investigating it" followed by "it's resolved", and it's been that way on and off for years now. What is "it" please?

You said it yourself, it has been that way for years. Their communication isn't changing anytime soon.

Logged in for the first time since the constant crashes yesterday, and ended up just doing daily endeavors and logging back off after about 20 minutes. overland skill delays between .5 and 2 seconds, enemy animations failing, crown store opened promptly though.

someone above posted about likely networking issues, and judging from my minimal knowledge of such things and the shared experiences of others I do think that may be accurate. but any level of communication from ZOS on this besides 'we looked at it'' would go far. is there anything we can do on our ends to improve things? as someone who mainly pvp's I get the many causes of lag there (though performance has been at an all time low ,in my few years of PVP'ing, for the past month or so) but to get this level of lag in empty overland areas? when I have no internet/computer issues in other applications? something isnt right, but its honestly sucking the joy and drive to play ESO right out. Since the beginning of April there has been a significant decrease in performance in ESO that really has not been addressed, would be great to get any level of communication on the matter

Have you performed any troubleshooting? I experienced the issues you're describing a few months ago. My first step of troubleshooting was to ping my ISP's gateway. I realized right away that I had an ISP issue because I was getting packet loss to the gateway. I contacted my ISP and after a few service calls, it was finally fixed.

It was only 1-3% packet loss, but that was enough to make ESO extremely frustrating.

Had my ping to the gateway been solid, I would have performed a traceroute or pathping to the eso server. That can help identify routing issues. Here is a help article that describes how:

    https://help.elderscrollsonline.com/#en/answer/30903

Like I said, I play smoothly without any of the issues you're describing. That doesn't mean it's not a problem on ZOS's end, but it means the server is probably okay and if it is a problem on their end, it might be with one of their links to the internet. There can also be issues between us and ESO which ZOS probably wouldn't be responsible for.

You can get your ISP's gateway IP from the pathping results. It will be the first hop after your router. Most routers have an address of 10.0.x.1 or 192.168.x.1.

When I experience lag, the first thing I do is open a powershell window and ping the gateway address with ping -t <ip address>. For example, if the first hop after 10.0.0.1 was 123.123.123.1, I would type the following in a powershell window and press enter: ping -t 123.123.123.1

I would then let it ping continuously for a few minutes at first, and then for an hour or two to see if there was any packet loss. Periodically, I would interrupt it by pressing ctrl-c to see the results. I did this recently, and my connection is good, so the results looked like this:

    Ping statistics for 123.123.123.1:
    Packets: Sent = 1314, Received = 1314, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 8ms, Maximum = 32ms, Average = 14ms

I'm not trying to whiteknight for zos, but anyone who is experiencing connection issues outside of cyrodiil should definitely troubleshoot to rule out issues on their end or see if there is a problem between them and ESO.

I play from Japan and use the information provided by the publisher, DMM.

However, due to the process of translation into Japanese, there is a 2~3 day delay before the patch notes and information regarding the problems encountered are released.
Information about server lag and login problems such as this one is almost never released in Japan.

That is why I am trying to get as much information as possible from the forum, but what I found there was "are looking into things".
I understand that this is a game that has been in service for many years and it is difficult to pinpoint the cause.
I want to enjoy playing the game but currently cannot do so.
Having no information at all and not knowing when it will be remedied is very unsettling.

We believe that Zenimax itself is going through a difficult time (mainly related to Microsoft) because of all the things that have been going on lately.
In the midst of all this, we thank you for your continued development of ESO services and extended DLC.

I hope this server issue will be resolved soon.
Also, hopefully, it would be even better if the information could be disclosed, even if it is just "some of the possible causes"
    Sorry for my poor English

I Appreciate the informative feedback and assistance! I do think it is easy to blame the game and assume things are fine on ones own end, and never properly check. many likely dont (myself included at times)

however with the current and seemingly continuous issues for the past month+, explicitly with ESO, i have been checking /all the things/ because it is frustrating and not normal. I've gone down nearly every rabbit hole of troubleshooting I could find regarding connectivity to ESO. Have done full resets, cache flushes, VPN'd, did a full reinstall recently too (I think wednesday last week?) because its been getting progressively worse seemingly daily since the beginning of April's update(with a minor reprieve after each time they do maintenance, though not this past maintenance), and explicitly with ESO, no other applications struggle with connectivity nor performance/hardware, some of which are more intensive than ESO. Leaves me at a loss.

Huge lag spikes and delay with abilities and combat this morning. Standing in town I have +40ms more than usual. I queued into a dungeon and the only thing that was working consistently was the group chat. None of us could use skills, swap bars or fight. The ping was jumping all over the place and eventually everyone gave up and disbanded the group.

The last time it was this bad it was something like a bad port on one of the machines. It took a good week before they found the issue. I doubt it's something quite as simple as that this time around though since they more than likely remember last time and have some steps in place to check that kind of thing more immediately now.

I got booted on the first login attempt with error 201 on both the PC NA and EU. Second attempt the login was successful. I looked up error 201 and it has to do with connection to the servers. We are having some electrical activity in terms of weather here where I live which might be having an effect but it is very light now and the storms are pushing on out.

If it's a ddos they won't acknowledge it because visibility is what the attackers want.

If it's a hardware issue they'll eventually tell us about it.

Could be routing I guess. Although I was having freezes/fast forwards last night (I'm in western Canada) along with another person who is in Ohio, but the third in our group from the southern US was fine.

When were you playing and what geographic area do you play from? PC or console? I'm in NE NA on PC and I played from around 7pm to 2am EDT last night. I played in a 3 trials and 2 arenas without any issues at all.

That's really good information. If that's when a lot of players are experiencing issues, it would explain why I never encounter them. Usually I'm done before 12AM EDT.

It *seems* a disproportionate number of people reporting issues are oceanic, but maybe that has more to do with the times they play at and less to do with where they're playing from.
