Weapons not quite working correctly?

I used to be able to hold down my attack key (on PC and PS5) and would automatically attack when I went over an enemy.

It seems recently that I have not been getting that to work now. I am running 48 painful stages in the Endless Archive and this is especially annoying there. I seem to have to regularly release the attack key/button and then re-press it to get an attack to come off and it even fails at times then.

Has anyone else seen this or did something just change for me?

I’ve been having difficulties with heavy attacks not going off, particularly on staves. It seems like one has to be at just the right view angle? I’m not sure, but yeah, it is frustrating. :/

That is similar to what I think I am seeing, but I am asking to see if others are seeing this or I am just missing something.

I can do heavy attacks into thin air when no enemies are around if I'm using a melee weapon, but I can't do heavy attacks with a staff unless I've got an enemy targeted (as indicated by whether skills on my skill bar are lit up for skills that need a target). It's always worked that way as far as I can remember, although I never really actively used staves until I made my Arcanist characters, so since Necrom came out. I've got staves on some of my older characters, but I haven't actively quested on them in so long that I can't remember whether heavy attacks with staves have always needed a target, but it makes sense to me that they should since they blast a magical attack and the attack needs to be going somewhere, unlike swinging a melee weapon wildly about at nothing.

I used to hold HA with lightning staff till an enemy died and then keeping it hold down till my aim goes to the next enemy and it automatically fired another HA.

Not working like this anymore, at least not always, often fails and I have to let go HA and press it again when I have the next enemy perfectly in my aim.
I agree it is frustrating and want it back, but I can see people would claim it was not working properly before.

For sure this new change negatively affects combat performances, especially in Infinite Archive and hard content. Hope it gets reverted...

I've been having these issue with my main (HA sorc) for a long time now. If I'm not at the right angle, my sorc just stands there doing nothing when I hold the left mouse button.

Yeah, the heavy attacks have been busted for oh, I dunno... a couple of years now? I and many other reported it both on the PTS (many iterations of the PTS in fact) as well as on live. Its not getting fixed. Put it in the bin with the rest of the "won't fix" issues. Whatever they changed that causes the inputs to drop was more than likely intentional and they have absolutely no desire to undo it.

Exactly! That is the character I certainly notice the issue the most on, my HA sorc, sometimes have the problem on my healer, but less aggravating than when it I can’t get the staple attack for my HA sorc to fire! :persevere:

That is exactly what I did. It always seemed to work until recently. Not sure how recently, but short enough that it is now a serious annoyance.

I don't think it was a couple of years. I was certain it still worked last December when I started playing again after about a year break, but maybe it broke earlier, especially on console, since I played on PC prior to my break.

It depends on the weapon you're using and I'm pretty sure it also depends on the stability of your connection. The 2-hander heavies have been broken for at least two years now because that was the last time I really played until recently and it's still as bad now as it was then. It seems dual-wield and one-hand and shield are still mostly in tact. Lighting staff is pretty iffy now. Resto seem okay. Inferno and ice staff seem to be hit or miss depending on the time of day and what color underwear I have on which I'll admit is worse than it was two years ago.

I do not know about a couple of years, but I definitely had these issues when Necrom dropped.

Yes, it may have been spotty for a while but now it is more consistently not hitting. I think in part because of the way staves targeting has been modified. Lighting staves in particular.

I don't think it has anything to do with heavy attacks per se. What I have noticed is that targeting in general seems to be a lot trickier to get right, from trying to interact with a summoned assistant while in the general vicinity of anything else that can be interacted with, to trying to loot a corpse while in the general vicinity of a resource node, and any other situation where there are multiple potential targets in your vicinity. It all seemed to work much simpler a few years ago, but then a lot of players had to complain about having trouble targeting other things while their assistants were out, so apparently there were changes made to the way potential targets are prioritized, and perhaps also changes to the sizes of the "hit boxes" or whatever they're called, such that now it can be difficult to summon an assistant and interact with it if there are any other targetable objects in the general area, regardless of how much farther away they are or how far out of our direct line of sight. Obviously I don't have any real understanding of what changes were made, but I'm just saying that targeting as a whole now seems to depend more heavily on getting a definite "aim" at whatever it is we're trying to target, which is more difficult to do if you are not playing in first-person point of view.

I just had this happen to me again as I was about to post this. I was at a crafting table, turned and walked away so I could summon my banking assistant and interact with it, but instead of interacting with my assistant I ended up reading a lore book that was behind me to the right at the "4 o'clock" position. This sort of thing happens to me a lot, and is an example of how wonky targeting has become.

And I thought it is me and my lack of button clicking competence that sometimesmy HA resto staff attacks don't go off - which is particularly annoying for my heal who needs these HA for sustain.

Adjusting or simply turning off "Arcanist Aim Assist" might be worth a try (Accessibility menu).

I had a few weird aiming hiccups with fiery grip and other ranged skills after Necrom dropped and setting the mentioned option to zero resolved it.

I have never had this on.
Location is messed up more than usual recently.
I've had attacks not hit tab targeted players, repeatedly and with much annoyance. The attack will hit some NPC to the side before it hits where I set it to hit.

It's done this off and on for me, too.

I've also had at least one situation that got me killed in IA where I couldn't attack at all. Could use abilities, but couldn't light or heavy attack and I was playing with a HA warden....

Last night I was heavy attacking by holding down the button when the focus jumped to another target a ways behind the boss that was directly in front of me. That's a first.

    Very annoying!

Haven’t played a heavy attack build. Sounds like folks are saying they just hold down the trigger and the weapon just keeps doing heavy attacks? If so is that hard on your fingers?

I recently started playing again after the Scions of Ithelia DLC released on PC (Bedlam Veil and Oathsworn Pit). And I have also been having more problems with Light Attack, Heavy Attack, and other Skills often not firing when I press or hold the buttons. For example: I will hold Heavy Attack but it does not fire and then I will have to release the button and try holding it again. I don't know when the problem first occurred, but it does seem to be worse than the last time I played before the DLC released.

I'm playing on PC/NA using the Official ESO Launcher with an XboxOne controller and no third party apps. I have 6 different XboxOne controllers that all work fine in other games. I thought it was my controller acting up, so I tried using different controllers, but they all seem to do the same thing.

Another thing that I have noticed since returning: something with ESO is causing my controller to turn off when the game is running but before I get to the Character Select screen. I will turn on my controller but then it will immediately turn back off. And this is also only happening when playing ESO. When ESO is not running I can turn on my controller and it will stay on for a long time before it automatically turns off.

It can be hard on the fingers. I don't do it very often. I was testing the stacking with Sargents Mail and was focused on the heavy attack for that.
