Mini Map Add-On: contribute or take away from the feeling of Adventure

I downloaded the mini map and am glad I have it. I too found it frustrating that I had to open the map a million times while playing. The nice thing about this game is if you don't want the mini map you don't have to have it. But even in WoW you didn't have to have it either but you used it. I don't believe in "This is a Elder Scrolls Game you don't need a mini map." you play the game you wish and I will play the game I wish. Stop trying to for your views on me. I believe the same thing for name plates. It is ridiculous that I can't see if another player is in a guild.

I am really enjoying this game but there are some huge misses that I hope Zenimax realizes they made some mistakes. I am hanging out and I am sure I will play this game for quite some time. Hope things get addressed quickly.

Why do people think the compass/custom waypoint solution is any less obtrusive than a mini map? I find that hilarious, they are both doing the same thing. Personally I love a mini map, especially if I am following multiple quests and it's also nice in a winding dungeon with lots of turns. I installed zr minimap and never looked back, hands down best addon in this game.

And hey, if you don't like it just don't install it. This game is more quest driven than exploration driven IMO. Doesn't mean I don't explore, but it's usually along the lines of getting to a quest, dungeon, or wilderness crafting station.

It would be great to have a mini map option.. Switching to the main map all the time is annoying!

MiniMap was the first addon I downloaded. Can't play without it.

If there wasn't a mini-map addon I probably wouldn't continue to play. I get lost easily in real life and in video games. Without the mini-map the frustration is just too high.

zrminimap just turn it off when you pvp it causes problems with the transitus shrines.

IMHO there are a few problems with the compass/navigation:
    - you can't see how far away something is from the compass.
    - the marker tells you the direction "as the crow flies". If the marker is East and the roads go North/South then you need to 'M'. This happens *a lot*.
    - door icons to other zones. If there's a guy in a hut, then a door icon is helpful. But if I'm in rivenspire and there's a quest in stormhaven, I don't want a marker on my compass telling me where the exit to stormhaven is.

But, generally, I do think the compass is a better idea than a minimap.

I think minimap is right up there with auction houses - they have no place in MMOs. Now, that doesn't mean we as MMO players haven't been ruined by these features and need to be weaned off them to realize this..

Where have the days gone where you broke out the grid paper and drew the dungeon as you explored it, keeping detailed notes about various facets of the game?

I definitely think that people have been ushered into a carebear era of dependency on such "features" they've become accustomed to.

Erm welcome to the 21st Century, we now have computers we don't have to cut down tree's to feed your need to draw your own Map. (we obviously need lots of energy Greenhouse effect and all that) When out in real life hiking I can walk and look at my map and Navigate, my GPS is my own real life minimap.
I would love to have a mini map in game, the addon doesn't quite cut the mustard currently, as its without the ability to zoom in and out (if I've missed this feature please tell me  )

That was the actual default mini-map for the game. It was one of the many casualties in the culling to the "minimal UI"

    "minimal UI"

You mean the console friendly UI? Almost every decision that was made in regards to UI design was done to cater to consoles and the controller, the list based inventory being the biggest culprit.
  • peechwurmnub18_ESO
I hardly see how removal of a minimap is making the UI "console friendly". I'm sure they made plenty of adjustments to the UI to cater to console players, but I really don't see how a minimap would have been part of that. The minimap removal was likely just part of going to a minimal hud overall. Honestly I wouldn't mind either way of it. I can play fine without one, but I do understand that some people are uh.."directionally challenged?" :p and if it helps some players feel more comfortable playing, then by all means they should add an option for it.

Note: CoD series has a minimap, and that's probably the highest selling console series.

No minimap. Elder Scrolls games dont have them and we will leave this an elder scrolls game. Not generic wow clone 369

    Morrowind had a Mini-map.

And they removed it because the players got angry over it for oblivion. There is no good reason to need a mini map.

    I don't want a mini map.
This is a beautiful looking game and I don't want my screen ruined by junk.
The location bar up the top of screen is just as good as a mini map and having to press M once in a while to get your bearings is no drama.
If my screen gets cluttered up with *** I can't turn off this will be a short loved experience for me.

To be honest, I'm surprised as an MMO gamer who did not play Elder Scrolls that the UI didn't have a map built in. I'm not a big fan of addons either, but it seems like some addons are needed for this game, especially the one that deals with showing you what you picked up with auto-loot turned on.

Yeah this is the problem, you need a bunch of addon's for basic mmo functionality. That really is a problem for an mmo. Things that work in single player titles do not always make for a good translation to an mmo, one of which is the minimalist ui, where you don't see xp gains, combat damage, etc. The other is a minimap. Also the lack of a name tag above heads is an issue.

I for one want a mini map. The add on one is buggy and causes lag spikes. I hate opening the big map.
  • Jnutter819
    Auto-run, open map. Easy.

If you want a mini-map get an add-on. But if you were riding a horse a wanted to look at a map, what would you do? Stop.

Actually, it is possible to just add the "mount horse" step in front of your suggestion. And I personally wish I always had a GPS with me (perhaps in a Google Glass fashion).

I think adding a minimap feature to the game would be great, so long as it can be toggled off an on, then people get their personal flavor. I like how a lot of people point and laugh at single player gamers that are trying their first mmo. As an old-hat mmo player, this game feels like a single player game that others are invading. I guess everyone's perspective is different.

It does kind of feel like Dark Souls but with auto-summon (and in Cyrodiil, auto-invade) all, and obviously not as difficult. At times I like that, but sometimes I wish there was an offline mode (which I know is crazy considering the name of the game) if only for immersion. It can kind of ruin a quest to have to summon and defeat a boss and instead just get the last arrow into someone else's kill.
  • Jnutter819
@Cherryblossom: I don't think the original ZrMM had a zoom/resize setting but the modified version (http://www.esoui.com/downloads/info142-ZrMM-Modified.html) does.

Just wanted to say, I love the zrminimap addon. Kudos to the author!

I would like to see a minimap in the base UI for one simple reason: so the detractors can't use the argument that the minimap addon gives its user and "advantage" that can't be had without using it. That argument shouldn't be allowed if the answer to the question, "if this was available in the base UI, would you use it?" is"no" for the vast majority of people complaining about the so-called "advantage".
  • Jnutter819
That's a point I hadn't thought of. And it would also help the console users, who presumably won't be able to use addons at all. Plus, they had a functional minimap early in beta that they took out for some BS reason about exploration which they could probably add back in as an optional feature.

I personally don't use the mini-map add-on nor see the need to use it myself. I've played many other MMO's that all have mini-maps and I usually always used add-ons that modified and "improved" them, but I'm too used to using the compass from TES games and found it very easy to use again in TESO.

I frequently run off in random directions when making my way to a quest just because I found a new POI, chest, event, mountain I want to climb or raw materials to harvest. I enjoy being able to just wander, explore, find new things and actually see the game ZoS created and I think if I had a mini-map, I would spend more time looking at that than at the actual landscape!

That being said, I understand why people would want one and feel more comfortable using one, and I will voice support for an in-game mini-map that can be toggled. I see no reason it shouldn't be included...I just won't use it myself!

:# I have a map, and it does not stop me from exploring. This is precision instrument and not the rails.

But I keep seeing the players who constantly stare at the map for 5-15 seconds. Yes it is so exciting in terms of gameplay .... ;)

For any of you addon developers out there. I suggest an alternative to the minimap, an alternate compass.

I too find it a little disorienting to try and keep track of the compass line at the top of the screen, the "compass" thing a minimap often provides (Being able to tell the direction your facing from a top-down visual instead of just a letter on a bar) seems to be easier to use. So if anyone could make such a compass, or know of one that already exists. I'd be very delighted. :)

I find these threads hilarious. NO THIS GAME SHOULDN’T or SHOULD HAVE (INSTERT WHATEVER). EVERYONE NEEDS TO PLAY THE GAME LIKE I WANT!!! IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO PLAY MMO!!!!

The more option in a game the more people enjoy it. The more people enjoy it the more people play the game. The more people play the game the longer the game stays around.
